Seems so long ago already. There was something eerie about watching the analog signals go silent though. Kind of like being on a sinking ship I guess.
What channel were you still getting on the lower right TV? It looked like you still had some chnnels left active, however, on the lower left TV, when you were checking for channels, nothing was picked up. Did that extra channel sign off in between the time you were checking channels on the two big TVs?
Wow! Now those were REALLY un-ceremonious! I think some of the channels in my area did a little special thing, but I had a function to attend that night and wasn't able to watch the shutdowns.
WCDC simulcasts WTEN, 24/7. They're located about 30 miles east Of Albany on Mt. Greylock in western Massachusetts, and serves an area where the channel 10 signal doesn't reach well. WCDC has been owned by, and has rebroadcast WTEN since the 1960's. Not sure about the shutdown delay.
@spunker88 Except for some of older stations in the province of Newfoundland, there is one there called VOC which must be left over from the colonial days.
@bumtownv2 Not all American stations start with W. The stations east of the Missippi do start with W. The ones west start with K. That was how the FCC designated the stations call letters in order to basically split the east USA from the west USA. There is one acception. KDKA in Pitsburgh, AM radio 1220 and VHF channel 2; was the very first radio station to broadcast in the USA.
@musicman0150 US. Amateur radio station call signs start with A, K, N, or W. Has NOTHING to do with their location. Only the number in the call sign indicates location. ex.: w1aw, New England k6nr, California, w4cgr, South Carolina. Although that's the official designation, any number call sign can be anywhere, especially due to the vanity call sign program and people who relocate are not required to change the number.
The video (and title) that was recorded is quite interesting, though it's kinda too long for a video (I think the last three minutes would be perfect). In Singapore, I don't think there was any analogue shutdown nor is there any analogue signal at all! I think people are not affected as at that point of time when analogue shut down, everyone was on Digital.
Excellent demo of the analog signals shtting down. Rember though, all of the TVs shown will still work with VCRs, DVD units, game consoles and even analog cable. You can use a modulator to run the new game systems on these TVs, and some modulators will let you choose the channel(s) you want to show a specific unit, such as, VCR can be 27, DVD on 33 and yes; games with some modulatetors can go up into the 70 to 83 UHF band range.
Thanks for posting. I thought our channels could have done something better, especially channel 6...very disappointed:( in their Gm's decision not to do something special.
I am glad not to be only person to watch WRGB go off the air. I miss WWXA but did WTEN and WCDC. I thought at least WRGB would do something because of it age, but no.
I loved those classic knob style tvs. When I was little, I had one and used to stay up all night searching through the knobs for any new channels. Way to go fcc
Cool Video. I wish someone did this for buffalo, ny. Most stations went off at 9am, and although I have 3 TV's, I slept through it. I did capture WGRZ switching to that dtv tape loop though.
The only analog TV station I could ever pick up was WMED in Calais, Maine. They shut down back in January. Not because of the switch to digital, but because they weren't receiving enough funds (they were a PBS station) because of this recession.
Great video. It's sad to see analog television leave the world forever.
Thanks for that great video with the vintage tvs side by side. I managed to capture WRGB going off the air too, in a video I have on youtube, although the quality isn't that great at all. Thanks!

HDTV digital switchover, monumental clusterf#@*k of the modern age. A taxpayer funded giveaway to the cell phone companies and the cable industry.

Why were WCDC and WTEN broadcasting the same picture? They went off at different times though!
Nice setup; I want to try something like that when DTV switchover reaches our region!

Why do all american TV stations start with 'W'?

@bumtownv2
All stations on the east coast start with W, on the west coast they start with K. In Canada they all start with a C

@musicman0150 Interesting, seems like it would have made more sense to name the east stations E instead of K and divided it down the middle.
