What is the ruling on the imam repeating some verses that speak of mercy or punishment?

Majmoo Fataawa sh-Shaykh Abd al-Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) (11/343, 344)

He answered as follows:

لا أعلم في هذا بأساً ، لقصد حث الناس على التدبر والخشوع والاستفادة ، فقد روي عنه عليه الصلاة والسلام أنه ردد قوله تعالى : (إِنْ تُعَذِّبْهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ عِبَادُكَ وَإِنْ تَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ فَإِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ) المائدة/118 ، رددها كثيراً عليه الصلاة والسلام .

I do not know of anything wrong with that, because it encourages the people to ponder and focus and benefit. It was narrated that one night the Prophet continuously repeated the verse (interpretation of the meaning): "If You punish them, then they will remain Your slaves, and if You (choose to) forgive them, then surely, You, only You, are the All‑Mighty, the All‑Wise" [al-Maa'idah 5:118] over and over and over, weeping

As brother "Doubtabillity" said, some of the Salaf (righteous forefathers) of this Ummah would also do this

One example that comes 2mind is of Imaam Abu Haneefah. Al-Qaasim ibn Maeen said: "Abu Haneefah spent an entire night in Prayer reciting this verse: "Nay, but the Hour is their appointed time (for their full recompense), and the Hour will be more grievous & more bitter" [al-Qamar 54:46], repeating it over & over and weeping, beseeching Allah until morning came"

Qaasim ibn Muhammad said "I went out one day & whenever I would go out I would always pass by `Aa'isha &greet her. That day I went out &when I found `Aa'isha she was praying, reciting this Verse over&over [52:26-27]

She was crying invoking Allah, repeating thisverse.I stood there waitin till I got tired; so I said, 'lemme go2 the market,do what I have2do &come back.' So after I finished my work, I returned 2 `Aa'isha. She was still repeating the verse, invoking Allah &crying
