I am guitarist and several years ago I composed a theme of 9 notes completely similar to a phrasing from the piano concerto #3 of Rachmaninov. I had still never listened to this artist before! By chance, I 'm not so famous than Coldplay, I believe that one would judge me systematically...

I know that the tempo and chords are the same, but this type of beat is very common and its stupid that Satriani thinks he owns it. There are two other songs under discussion that are very similar to both songs, by Enanitos Verdes and Cat Stevens. You don't see these artists suing anyone - because that is arrogant and naive to think that you own a certain chord progression. I am saying that sometimes artists think in the same way, or are inspired by other music.
the thing is not the chord progression - problem is the melodie - but the same thing is it with Enanitos Verdes! At all - theres a completly diffrent rythmen - the point is that coldplay copyed the satriani song with new sound and lyrics! IN my opinion. I dont hate coldplay or something but this is very uncool!
Well I see definite similarities in the song by Enanitos Verdes and Satch, in the chord progression and the guitar riff itself. But i don't think Satch stole from them, I just think artists think the same way sometimes. There is no way that an artist can say they came up with an original chord progression these days. Although I do agree that Satriani is very talent, I don't know what kind of history books you are reading. One of the Greatest musicians may be your opinion, but is not based on substance or fact. Untrue. Vocals are important to songs not music. Music doesnt have vocals. Look back over the years. Lyrics / songs are relatively new excluding hymns. "Music" on the other hand will never get old. Ill take Beethovan over Pavarotti any day of the week.
I agree with you that vocals are important to SONGS not MUSIC, but vocals are just another way for an artist to propagate a message. There is only so much that someone can say through instruments and chords. And "Ooh baby baby" and that type of improve is hardly the backbone of any good songs. I like acdc to zz top and pretty much any rock in between. Fave vocalists are Dio and Bruce dickinson. Fave bands, Megedeth and Metallica. Im not runbbishing vocals in general. Just the "Thrown together in 5 mins and stuck on a commercial radio satation" type stuff. The general listener hears what they want you to hear, i go a little deeper.

I'm the same way. I have only played for a few years but I can't respect them either, especially when the artist actually has NO talent whatsoever. Some of the commercial groups have talent but they are too overproduced for me to like them.
The issue for these songs, (unlike the Cat Stevens, Balin, Enanitos Verdes, etc.), is that the Coldplay chorus section shares the same; Melody, Harmony, Rhythm, Meter, Beat and Tempo, as the Satriani piece.
There are next to no songs that share this many of the elements of music, and therefore it will be very interesting to see what becomes of all of this in court as the case progresses.

I've had the experience to be on stage in front of 10 ir 15 thousand people ( i don't over there, but in my country 10 or 15 thousand people in a peace concert are a ot) , and the experience to meet some "famous" guys, and some great musicians.

I know that the tempo and chords are the same, but this type of beat is very common and its stupid that Satriani thinks he owns it. There are two other songs under discussion that are very similar to both songs, by Enanitos Verdes and Cat Stevens. You don't see these artists suing anyone - because that is arrogant and naive to think that you own a certain chord progression. I am saying that sometimes artists think in the same way, or are inspired by other music.

Well I see definite similarities in the song by Enanitos Verdes and Satch, in the chord progression and the guitar riff itself. But i don't think Satch stole from them, I just think artists think the same way sometimes. There is no way that an artist can say they came up with an original chord progression these days. Its all been thought up before. I don't think Coldplay stole. Thats my two cents :P

Although I do agree that Satriani is very talent, I don't know what kind of history books you are reading. One of the Greatest musicians may be your opinion, but is not based on substance or fact. But from what I understand is that Satriani's lawyer has said as that they want it settled out of court. In other words, he is looking for the money, not the admission of guilt.

I know that you said that, I was just adding on that while guitarists may know him, many are not fans. Personally I know one musician that is pretty talented in a lot of different types of guitar, and thinks that Satriani and other guitarists like him (Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen) are quite limited. Joe satriani is good, but Coldplay is better because I can listen to them for hours.. As much as I'd like to listen to a guy guitar soloing for hours, i'll pass. Vocals are important to music, not all songs because instrumentals are amazing too, but this is the same kind of thing as Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen. I just can't get into it. Coldplay didn't rip joe off, its as simple as that.

Untrue. Vocals are important to songs not music. Music doesnt have vocals. Look back over the years. Lyrics / songs are relatively new excluding hymns. They were introduced as a way of making "Music" more appealing to the masses. Personally after 20 years of listening to "Ooh baby baby" and other lovey dovey bullshit, it just got incredibly boring. "Music" on the other hand will never get old. Ill take Beethovan over Pavarotti any day of the week.

I agree with you that vocals are important to SONGS not MUSIC, but vocals are just another way for an artist to propagate a message. There is only so much that someone can say through instruments and chords. And "Ooh baby baby" and that type of improve is hardly the backbone of any good songs. The music I listen to has much more to the vocals than the way you have dumbed down all lyrics into being "boring,"

Yeah, i was over exagerating the point a little. What i meant was, how many songs do you hear that are love songs. Im not totally impartial to songs myself. I like acdc to zz top and pretty much any rock in between. Fave vocalists are Dio and Bruce dickinson. Fave bands, Megedeth and Metallica. Im not runbbishing vocals in general. Just the "Thrown together in 5 mins and stuck on a commercial radio satation" type stuff. The general listener hears what they want you to hear, i go a little deeper.

The issue for these songs, (unlike the Cat Stevens, Balin, Enanitos Verdes, etc.), is that the Coldplay chorus section shares the same; Melody, Harmony, Rhythm, Meter, Beat and Tempo, as the Satriani piece.
There are next to no songs that share this many of the elements of music, and therefore it will be very interesting to see what becomes of all of this in court as the case progresses.

Given Cat Stevens wrote Heaven in 1973 which uses the same melody, meter and chord progression I think Satriani has a nerve.
Cst Stevens song can be found on youtube entitled "Cat Stevens - Love / Heaven - from Foreigner Live - 1973" and the segment in question begins at about 3 mins 17 seconds.
Satriani will get laughed out of court when Coldplay's lawyers play the Cat Stevens song.

Well, let me tell you something, as an atourney i had the luck to find some great contacts, well, since they know i'm musician too, they've organized a lot of peace concerts, and, i've played in someones. I've had the experience to be on stage in front of 10 ir 15 thousand people ( i don't over there, but in my country 10 or 15 thousand people in a peace concert are a ot) , and the experience to meet some "famous" guys, and some great musicians.

I can tell you for sure, a lot of things in music industry are just image. Example: Coldplay and their 60 min interview, or Satriani and his "it broke my heart" those kind of stuff are just "fans support" search. SO, off course we cannot trust what they say on tv, especially if they are being sued. Besides, well music is bussines, that's why it's so ruined. Example there's a subject in Fernando sor's music unviersity called "the music bussines", so it's all bussines, unfortunately.
