She's positioned as the Jesus was! Too disturbing to say the least, but I love this movie none the less! Piper Laurie and Sissy Spacek were wonderful in it too! Thx ladies!
It's regrettable that Piper Laurie did not win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar this year. The award went to Beatrice Straight for her very brief, but strong, performance in "Network". Laurie's character was involving and over-the-top and, certainly, the actress did not disappoint. Her performance is multi-layered and, ultimately, an hilarious piece of acting, especially for a "horror" movie. She perfectly plays the psychotic, Christian mother of a telekinetic teen aged girl. Watch it.
Amo a Piper laurie, esta escena es una clasica escena del cine clasico de terror, mas aun cuando pasan a la toma del cristo crucificado que murió en la misma manera que ella.
This is some of Piper Laurie's absolutely iconic character acting. She is "channelling" something extremely visceral here, really frightening and disturbing her audience (her guttoral, "orgasmic" moaning is still shockingly effective after 30 years). DePalma's "still life" of Laurie's awful but beautiful gaze at Spacek, with that haunting fugue-like music, diffuse lighting; It's really a masterpiece of horror, in terms of writing, acting & direction. To me, this is our generation's Nosferatu.
Piper Laurie is a consummate actress, and an ongoing revelation. MUST SEE HER IN 'BAD BLOOD...THE HUNGER' coming out in Fall/Winter of 2009. The film has won 17 major Festival Awards, including Best Film, Best Director and Actor Conrad Janis, Best Actress Piper Laurie, etc. Go See it, it's Hitchock and Agatha Christie and Nicholas Roeg, plus.
This is not a scene of crucifixion; look up the Saint Sebastian. The figure that they pray to is NOT Jesus but a figure of St. Sebastian as he was tied to a stake and shot at with arrows.
i say, give them both the oscar. seriously. i wonder what won for best actress and best supporting actress that year... i doubt it was a pair of performances this powerful.
In '77Oscars went to Dunaway (leading) & Beatrice Straight (supporting) both for Network. Network... another boring movie in a typical american style, full of pathetic and winged things (unethical media, presenter like a consience of american society, bla bla bla). Spacek & Laurie should be the winners, but Laurie Piper had strong competition in supporting role conquest, because in '77 was also nominated an amazing Jodie Foster (Taxi Driver) but as we know they weren't aprecciate by academy :(

@julianveronica I doubt that THEY even gave this film so much as a look that year! This was a horror film and also a bit of a teen flick, and its my understanding that the Academy has something of a prejudiced atitude about both those types of films. So, they no doubt regarded this movie as "exploitation trash" or something.
@julianveronica No they didn't. Berrice Straight beat Piper Laurie and Faye Dunaway beat Sissy Spacek both in the film ' Network'. No way near as good as 'Carrie'!!!!
@julianveronica at least both of them were nominated. and FYI another female duo won, Faye Dunaway for best actress and Beatrice Straight for supporting actress for Network which is with Robert Duvall
they obviously made her look like jesus, and there are other similar conotations also...

My fav melody ever. It almost makes you feel sorry for her; in a violent death she finds peace at last.
A brilliant contrast to the organ/brass variation from the candle scene that was looming and frightening, this one is mournful and gentle.

Definitely agree. Do you know if there is a video of the candle scene on youtube?
