Would wing chun not be suitable in ring, I have watched most of your vids all excellent, some are about building and maintaining the bridge etc so if these principles are adhered to surely wing chun would work in ring , or are gloves, rules the problem due to loss of feel. bit confused . thankyou
Jin, question) I have been learning wing chun for a matter of months one previous question to yourself was about what you think is best wing chun or mma , you answered wing chun in streets and mma with grappling in ring etc. Why would wing chun not be suitable in ring considering once your proficient at closing the gap against boxers etc then your wing chun training would come into play, I have watched most of your vids where you talk about closing and building and maintaining the bridge so why
@JohnsonHYlau idiot..everyone knows that. Jus because Bruce lee said it First means u cant have other Sifu's saying they express theirselves thru martial arts? Wow ur a retard. Jus because chuck norris can roundhouse kick in return of the dragon No one else can?
@xXUrbanWarriorsXx it's a good question, but really impossible for me to answer because of so many different variables, such as your learning curve, patience etc...i will say though that IMO i think it is possible to teach yourself the bulk of the concepts and principles that wing chun has to offer, via internet, DVD's, books etc..
of course, a good instructor helps immensely, but then again a bad instructor can set you back years and years. my advice is "do what you can do", focus on what you can control, such as your own personal training. try and find like minded individuals and train together. but don't give up..remember, to enjoy the journey of your martial arts path, no matter where it takes you, take care and peace! - Jin
If I wish to learn the beautiful art of wing chun could I start to learn it from home and without partner. Where and witch video should I start with?
I hope someday I will find a serious partner or maybe one school where I could finally practice like I wish, not like now catching mosquitos in the air. ;)
I'm sorry if I asked some maybe stupid questions and some questions that you answered before. We are all learning all our life, isn't true. ;)
As I read you tryed a lot of martial arts so I really appreciate some your guidnisess.
I really like all of this arts it's beautiful and effective. I really don't know in witch to put all my efforts. I really like also knife and stick fighting
so my question is how could be this integrated with wing chun.
If I wish to learn the beautiful art of wing chun could I start to learn it from home and without partner. Where and witch video should I start with?
Before It' was really difficult to find a serious partner who want
train imagine now because I'm on the other side of the country. I tryed with a lot of friend, but they expect result's durring the night witch it's impossible, so they stoped.
So I'm stuck at the begginigs all the time. I had no change to try new things.
So here it's the problem. I have all the possible video (thank's god for internet) on martial arts from Dan Inosanto, Ron Balicki, Paul Vunak, Emin Boztep,
Dog Brothers, more and more... but I have not a training partner. And this is killing me.
The problem that I had it's that my great friend and instructor it was an instructor apprentice and we stucked on the beggining lessons for all three years long.
Don't get me wrong It is important to repeat and practice the basic, but I would really like to know more not only "subrada". I totally agree that tecnique are not so
good as concepts and moves. Now I wake up with and I'm 23 years old. Last two years I traveled a lot, I moved on three different location.
At that time I had no Idea what martial arts is or what PFS is. I've only heard about karate and judo. Ok I was real young.
The second time was on my 17 birthday I encounter Jun Fan Gung Fu and Kali. I've practiced it about 3 years. I really liked it and was also good, or I hope so.
By the way, don't get bent out of shape..... It's just a joke! I did hear what you had to say and I will commend you for your insight and wisdom. I have been a Wing Chun practitioner for almost 30 years and I will say that most often the most important approach to combat is the mental approach.
The real meaning of kung fu is to learn and if bruce lee said it,I didnt know that. Lin repeated it and didnt claim to invent it he just passed it on in a benevolent way. As a martial artist/student I learn from any source that is willing to share and if something is not correct I will learn this eventually as learning is a process in which knowledge is sought.Lin has much knowledge and with his triangle concept,it may help me, I will verify with my Sifu
Oh and he also said "Be Water My Friend" I really love that idea.
"Be Water" is that idea of adaptation, like the thought of continual growth of who you are. Like in Wing Chun, moving forward. All great ideas to be used again and again, no matter WHO says them.
One more for you... "Running water never grows stale, so you got to keep on flowing." All similar ideas, expressed slightly different.
So what if he says what Bruce stated a few times. Most philosophies have been taken from someones ideas and not their own. I'm sure someone even said it before Bruce.
I never studied with anyone, maybe a bit by myself and I always had a desire to learn hand to hand combat. First is was because of Bruce, then it was the deeper meaning of it, the thinking behind it. The art when taken to a new level is quite beautiful.
For me, it was another Quote: "It's a process of continuing growth."
@JohnsonHYLau What are u even saying. He's talking about expressing himself though martial arts. its not like bruce lee was the first person to come to that conclusion.
my mother took me to go see bruce lee in a drive thru as a kid. when i found out his first fighting style was wing chun i took it up to remember my mom.
Great comments on why you study martial arts. As in any discipline, it is the science and logic that 'glues' one's interest. An artist seeks the spiritual side of life to not only discover internally what he's about but also his interrelation with his environment. It is a lifestyle similar to other disciplines such as religion, dancing, etc that one passionately pursues throughout life. As my Sifu Wan Kam Leung has sought the spiritual side of Ving Tsun.
very deep. I started bc I did want to learn how to defend my self on the streets but don't like guns. Now that I've been studying for a few years... I can't use that same answer for why I continue studying martial arts.
Thanks for posting this video. It gives me a lot to think about.
I started learning martial arts as a dumb kid and thought it looked cool in movies. By the time i'd grew out of that I realised it was a fun hobby if you have a nice club and friendly people to practise with.
Bit of a personal question. Im suffering from depression and low self esteem. I get bouts of rage and frustration. I am in no way a "sporty" type but wing chun really appeals to me. Would taking up wing chun help me?
your deprssion ,rage etc....is all your emotions.....which u need to control as a man.
wc or any other disipline gives you a way to practace control.....even after a couple months you'll notice drastic improvents in ur life......the way u face life.=)
@mugambokush yes martial arts will change you as a person besides the obvious fact that it's a good exercise get's your serotonin going, you'll really see urself "grow" inside as a person. i notice i can handle crap at work much better now if i've been going to my practice, things i used to find difficult with are easier to cope wid and overcome, and more "motivated" overall. I am sure WC is great like for focus, & you'll get a sense of inner accomplishment after getting in touch w/ your body.
@mugambokush I would strongly advise you to take it up to 'alliviate' the internal issues that you have. It also incorporate zen philosophy that can enhance your emotions. But you need to find a good sifu with those qualities. Check out WKL on youtube.com
I have a few question for you to answer. 1. You learn a few martial arts, so which one is your favorite? I mean which one is more you. Its like you have a few suit, and one of your suit is your favorite . 2. What do you think about people who learn wing chun from DVD.? a lot of DVD selling on the net such as master wong, GM Samual Kwok and other sifu... Do you think people can improve learning wing chun from DVD.?
@razlee220875 i like your questions. 1. it's really hard to say, i think when i was younger, i really enjoyed Jun Fan JKD, Shoot Fighting, Muay Thai and Boxing. But now that i'm older, i really enjoy and appreciate Wing Chun, BJJ, Wrestling, Sun Tai Chi because it doesn't require so much athleticism to be able to use.
2. i think it's great that people have access to DVD's, Videos and Books. and i know for a fact that people can learn from Videos because i get hundreds of emails every week from people all over the world letting me know that the Tutorial has helped them.
lastly, i think the most important part of learning from DVD's or Videos is that the information be "concept" based, that way the individual learns not only the "how" but the "why" of each movement. i think that's why people have enjoyed my Tutorial because i make sure that the bulk of the learning is the "concepts" and "principles, which many other instructors tend to ignore or gloss over.
I agree... everything that we do or even say is an expression and an aspect of our inner Being. Besides working I have written three books to find out that I "talk" to myself through this expression. In this way I learn.
u are very clever and intersting bid respect but.. yes but.. u speak to long. try to speak more... flow. U dont must to say all the time ok ok yee.. and repet. Its my small advaice. th for films. respect
This video makes a lot of sense, especially the part about how so many of the internal martial arts practitioners are in really bad shape. Martial arts alone is not enough to get you into top shape. You must do extra conditioning work. Weights, cardio, stretching, maybe some plyometric drills. It bothers me when I see ads for schools saying "Don't bother with weights and cardio. Our classes will give you everything you need." It simply isn't true.
Yeah Bruce Lee said it first....and I agree, to me even though there is no honor among thieves, or in street fights, I hold myself to a higher standard, TO ME that is what seperates or unites myself with others..... I respect empty hands fights more than someone "blowing someone away"...from a close distance anyone can point and pull the trigger, even children, and sadly they have..and martial arts are hard work..."If it isn't hard, its probably not worth doing."
Don't you think you came across this answer and figured, "yeah, I like it. I'm going to stick with this". I mean, logic says if you found the answer after you already begun, then you didn't know why to begin with. You're right, it couldn't have been any of those things like getting in shape or self-defense according to your analysis, but maybe they were and you just didn't think of it in time. And since you were already enrolled, you decided to look for another reason why you took martial arts.
LIKE EVERYTHING YOU SAID, BUT ONE THING. HAVING A GUN A AND BEING PROFCIENT WITH SAID WEAPON ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. JUST LIKE OWING A SWORD YOU HANG ON THE WALL. ANY WEAPON NEEDS TRAINING IN A VARIETY WAY, DRY FIRE, FoF, AND ACCURACY. NO NIT PICKING JUST THROWING OUT MY .02.
i was wondering which sifu you study under, and which lineage of wing chun you take? I live in the Los Angeles area and i've been looking around for a wing chun school for a while.
I really want to study wing chun but I dont know where there is a good school in Houston. So can you ask your instructor for me? Please and Thank you.
I like martial arts because it's a game that is played with your mind, body, spirit, and heart. To completely dominate someone who is way bigger than you physically is pure magic. martial arts build character and will make you a better person overall. it teaches confidence and self control, the ability to think and react under any situation. This is why I like martial arts. This is why I do martial arts.animal styles, muay thai, kyokushin, boxing, jiujitsu, wrestling, judo, wing chun and its fun
Hey, that was was an excellent video. Not for self defense, and not for exercise (even if those are indeed side advantages), but the primary motivation is for honestly communication who you are through movement. I never really grasped it that way. I think the beauty of it is our intuitive sense of that communication. But the honest communication is the explicit sense, the rational motivation for practice. Thanks for taking the time to spell this out.
Hey Jin, I'd like to ask you a question, I think this is the place - in a street fight situation, you know that Wing Chun and MMA are VERY different, but which will you use to defend yourself? The internal or external one?
if i had to defend myself "on the street" then i would use wing chun and anti grappling strategies.
if i am sparring "in the ring" then i would use MMA tactics and grappling strategies while still adhering to several wing chun principles and concepts.
some people do, they are called poets or even actors. "expressing yourself honestly" IMO means being true to yourself while being fully in the moment of whatever you are doing.
I have sincerely asked myself this very thing many times. I believe that the fundamental thing required to express yourself honestly is to first know yourself honestly!
I believe that our life and death are like a leash tied to the cat's neck in the garden. Until he learns to let go of his desire of wanting to break lose from it to roam the garden without direction, will he be able to know himself honestly and then become truly free and not need the leash any longer. Take care!
When you brought up the topic of expressing yourself through combat movement, you made me wonder how I express myself, and I can't think of a think except breathing.
And by breathing I mean like a single or two slow, deep breaths... which are usually followed by light chills running through me. Would you think that counts as expressing myself??
reach the point of "no thought". if you think of not thinking, that is a thought, if you think of expressing yourself that too is a thought. keep learning to "shut off" more and more..mentally as well as physically.
the highest form of art is "simplicity" but to reach it you have to "strip away" not "add on". your combat movements are only "tools" that should be directed inwardly to continually "strip away" at the "clay" which is yourself. only then can you reach the masterpiece which is the "essence" of who you really are.
iy you make it a conscious effort, to do those breaths, and if you reach the point where you can do it at will - like opening an d closing your hand - (including shiver and all ) that would be the beginning of an art form.
Nice thought to run shivers of good feelings through the body at will.
The old Bruce Lee conclusion -- marvellously stated. thanks for posting, interesting as always :)

I started to practiced Paul Vunak's PFS from my sixteen for a few mounts, but then for financial problems I had to stop.

but after youre in the art, you figure out all the other good things about it, and soon the self defense aspect is just one of many...

there's only two wing chun schools that i would recommend. Hawkins Cheung in los angeles and Gary Lam in Monterrey Park. good luck!

This is why I do martial arts.animal styles, muay thai, kyokushin, boxing, jiujitsu, wrestling, judo, wing chun and its fun

i agree that martial arts builds character. nicely put. take care and peace!

For me, martial arts fill the gap between the start where things start getting physical to the time of drawing the weapon/gun/mobile phone.
Wing Chun teaches so much more than any martial art I've done so far. Positioning, situational awareness, distancing, closing, etc.

Thanks so much brah.
I've had LESS back/neck problems/injury since doing Wing Chun in Jan than the 3 years I did full-contact Karate.

Hey Jin, I'd like to ask you a question, I think this is the place - in a street fight situation, you know that Wing Chun and MMA are VERY different, but which will you use to defend yourself? The internal or external one?
WeakHeadphones 2 years ago
if i had to defend myself "on the street" then i would use wing chun and anti grappling strategies.
if i am sparring "in the ring" then i would use MMA tactics and grappling strategies while still adhering to several wing chun principles and concepts.

Thanks on that :) keep uploading, I just subbed to you! :D

what does 'express yourself honestly' mean - why does martial arts have a role in this ? Why not just use conversation ?
dreamcastII 2 years ago
some people do, they are called poets or even actors. "expressing yourself honestly" IMO means being true to yourself while being fully in the moment of whatever you are doing.

i know why i started martial arts
HermesDo 2 years ago
Yah I whole hartedly agree with you there.
It's about the feeling you get from practicing and seeing yourself improve.
I put on my favorite songs and practice and it's the one of the best feeling in the world.
Martial arts may make give you physical stength and confidence but the inner strength and mental clairity I get far outweighs all the physical stuff.

yea, music can definitely help you get in the right frame of mind. peace!

Thanks, Jin!
Take care!
michor10 2 years ago
i agree with you. and i like the cat analogy. "conquering others" is easy, "conquering yourself" is a lifetime. peace!

i also want to ask something else
is these your thoughts>>?? or your beliefs?
HermesDo 2 years ago
both
chinaboxer 2 years ago
hope its true
HermesDo 2 years ago
I could not agree more.
I think the wish to express yourself, and to go forward on the path of constant improvement is what separates martial artists from martial craftsmen.
You lifted Wing Chun to the level of engineering, and you always strike me to be friendly and to have a lot of fun in what you do.
So the art that I see when you perform is producing joy via improving wing chun.
Hope that does not sound too pathetic, but that`s what i see.

When you brought up the topic of expressing yourself through combat movement, you made me wonder how I express myself, and I can't think of a think except breathing.
And by breathing I mean like a single or two slow, deep breaths... which are usually followed by light chills running through me. Would you think that counts as expressing myself??
fdesa12 2 years ago
reach the point of "no thought". if you think of not thinking, that is a thought, if you think of expressing yourself that too is a thought. keep learning to "shut off" more and more..mentally as well as physically.
chinaboxer 2 years ago
the highest form of art is "simplicity" but to reach it you have to "strip away" not "add on". your combat movements are only "tools" that should be directed inwardly to continually "strip away" at the "clay" which is yourself. only then can you reach the masterpiece which is the "essence" of who you really are.
chinaboxer 2 years ago
sorry for sounding like such a fortune cookie! =P to find an example of "honest self expression" just look into the eyes of any baby.
every "artist" strives to become "childlike" in the hopes to achieve it.
chinaboxer 2 years ago
That depends, dude.
iy you make it a conscious effort, to do those breaths, and if you reach the point where you can do it at will - like opening an d closing your hand - (including shiver and all ) that would be the beginning of an art form.
Nice thought to run shivers of good feelings through the body at will.
Greetings
