  • CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME THE NAME OF THE SONG THAT STARTS AT 4.59????

Sorry for the caps, I just really really want to know. It just hit me straight away. Sounds a bit like a tamer Howlin' Wolf( maybe even a younger Howlin Wolf?), and it's so damn catchy....

  • @PaperTreeMusic I just found out who it was haha! It is Captain Beefheart doing a Howlin Wolf cover called " Somebody in my home!" It was an out take for Safe As Milk.

    Such a damn funky tune!!!

  • Merci !!!! Bel-Ami !

  • Aww man record companies weren't able to mold BeefHeart into a pop band :*(

Anyone else got a tear for BeefHearts terrible ignorance lol

  • @JimmyPage97 Ya canna ever mould a real artist. He won't compromise, not for any amount.

Ya can mould a parrot tho .. no prob ;-)

  • Beefheart has been eligible for induction into the Rock & Rock Hall of Fame since 1991 and has never even been nominated. Meanwhile John Cougar Mellencamp and Bob Seger are in there. How's that for some bullshit?

  • @Notecrusher ill do ya one better...the ronettes are in....the moody blues, skynard NOT!

  • God he's gorgeous and I love his voice <3

  • look at the sky at 1:27

  • Sorry Howlin Wolf typo.

  • My obscure comment is..............Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahd this is fuckin awesome!

  • The young Don Van Vliet looks like Eddie Vedder

  • So if this was made in 97, why is zappa alive and healthy in it?

  • @elfeicho ...films take a while to make ready fit for broadcasting

johnny shines was in can't you hear the wind howl but dead when it broadcast

  • @elfeicho It was made in 1992 - 1993 but wasn't brodcast until 1996.

  • they made a documentary? why havent i seen it??????????

  • someone please tell me what that song is at 6:10 it's fantastic!!!

  • @AviatorAndyK It's called Somebody in My Home and it's by Howin Wolf. There's a different live version on the Grow Fins boxset but I've got the full version of it on my channel. Check it out if you want.

  • @moonfrogrich2 What a laugh!,I'm so scared-d-d,come find me,You you-tube warrior wanker.

  • @moonfrogrich2 Ry Cooder next, why don't you die as well, goodbye to the talentless and the talent free.

  • @1:41 I didn't know he made an album named Trout. Kind of similiar to Trout Mask Replica, even in the cover

  • Do you have any idea what the song playing around 5:15 is? And when it was recorded?

  • @dmellowyellow18 That's a 1966 Doug Moon era demo of Howlin' Wolf's "Somebody In My Home".It's amazing, isn't it?That version hasn't been released so far (it's on bootleg though) but this live version (also from 1966) was released on the 'Grow Fins' box set :-

    watch?v=44tmsbWwW-I

  • Cheers for this it's in my favs..narrated by the late.great John Peel too...what a treat!

  • MOST under-rated musician in American history!

  • Can anyone tell me the name of the track at 5:09?? I'm not a Beefheart expert, can't find this monster anywhere. Thanks to all....

  • @MapsOfJupiter It's called "Somebody In My Home", I have a copy of it on the Revenant Records "Grow Fins" 3 volume Beefheart rarities album...it's from 1965 and, I believe, is an original Magic Band composition...but I'll have to check the liner notes, I might be wrong!

  • @vollsticks Wow, a thousand thanks for that! Someone told me it was a Howlin Wolf cover...I'd never have known either way. That's the cool thing about this community, you can always find a fellow traveller who wants to help. Cheers again, I'll look for the album you mention.

  • @MapsOfJupiter Been trying to post the link but it won't let me! It's on here, root around a bit and you'll find it...posted by billyshitcheese2, if that's any help. Hope you find it!

  • @MapsOfJupiter I found billyshitcheese's post but it's a different version...the one in the documentary is very sparse-sounding, real echoey...a demo or live recording perhaps? Guess if I dig deep enough it'll turn up in time. I like things dog rough!

  • @MapsOfJupiter I've got it on my channel and SURE 'NUFF it's one of the earliest Safe as Milk demos.

  • Well I'm still looking for that $2 broom and that $2 room. You?

  • Thanks for posting.

Saw this years ago, sadly my vhs copy was lost somewhere - it's lovely to see it again :)

  • Gray corn flake emotions are watched through blue satellite dishes in his eyes

  • What is in the sky at 1:28??

  • he had a great sense of comedy and humour

  • Mojave, a more desolate and inhospitable place doesn't exist in the US. I drove thru it and that was enough, can't imagine living there. More power to ya Don. Thanks for uploading this, love Beefheart.

  • RIP the Good Captain ... and uncle John Peel as well... two GIANTS of music

  • Holy motherfucking shit! what is that amazing song that starts at 3:21?

  • I,ll miss you Captain Beefheart.thank you for your gift.

  • imagine a Captain Beefheart movie with Josh Brolin as the Captain, it could happen

  • @lpage2112 Yeah would be cool and either Anne Hathaway or Reese Witherspoon would be perfect candidates to play Jan, Don's (Captain's) wife

  • This is an awesome doc! Recommend it to everyone. Fascinating. Gives you a good sense of what the Captain was all about. His whole life and persona was 'art itself'.

  • Oh nvm, i should have just waited 2 minutes until they showed the name.

  • Whats the Magic song at 5:10?

  • Oh no! Not another one of my youth idols who passed away. Very sad news. I see a lot of artist that I liked disapear years after years from the last decade (Piggy, James Gurley, Dickie Peterson, Ron Asheton, John Entwistle . I think that the Captain gone for a great gig with his long time friend and one of my all times biggest idol, Frank Zappa. I going to listen to Bongo Fury album right now. A must to celebrate the memory of the Captain... and drink a beer.

  • I'll always have the BEEF in my heart!

  • Dons music changed my outlook on music and had has exerted a primal influence upon my own compositions. Much has been said about how much of it was his music and how much was the other guys, but that's immaterial. When the 'other guys' were on their own (listen to Mallard) they were a pale imitation. Don & his influence was the keystone that held it all together.

Haven't heard any new music from him for 30 years but I'll miss him anyway.

He was too much for his mirror. RIP Don

  • I'm not sure if I heard him say it or I'd read that he'd said it in an interview. Either way it works. I do know that he was a great lover of animals. He influenced so many musicians in an array that runs from The B52's to Tom Waits. He'll not soon be forgotten.

  • much respect and r.i.p. you crazy old bastard.

  • Here was a guy who was unafraid to step forward and deliver music as he saw and felt it. Today's music industry would never let the likes of him be heard. I'm very thankful for what he's brought into my life for the past 40+ years. A true original who once said "I make music for children and animals". He's with them now. Rest in Peace, Don

  • @LOOKN450 I haven't read that he's said that, I'm pretty sure Stravinsky said something like that once though and he was a figure that Don greatly admired so it's possible that he took it from him. Rest in peace, Don - one of the most amazing human beings ever.

  • R.I.P. Captain Beefheart...

  • RIP brother - and thanks B-)

  • its so simple but so profound

  • R.I.P. Captain Beefheart.

  • good bye my captain - you have been an inspiration to me - thank you for your music - thank you for something different - to blue jeans and moon beams and all of the rest- RIP

  • R.I.P beefheart

  • There are musical tracks that you hear and your life is changed or at least your musical intelligence gets richer. That's Alright Mama - there's one. I Wanna Hold Your Hand - there's another. Anarchy in the UK - for sure. Sure 'nuff 'n Yes I do -- first time I heard it I realized I knew nothing but NOTHING about blues singing, rhythm and slide guitar and that this wild mad hatter was my chance to learn.

  • I've been living in a bomb shelter listening to fugazi. (I don't have a beard). Thank God for youtube.

  • Long live Captain Beefheart!!! Read the Captain Beefheart memorial page on

    ArtLyst.com

  • RIP

  • RIP el Capitan

  • Thanks TONS for the INCREDIBLE music!!!! I used to be in a band called, Younglust, which later evolved in Thin White Line. My guitarist was so heavily into Beefheart's music, everyone called HIM Beefheart! When I first heard him play Shiny Beast in the car, I thought it was HORRIBLE!! But I wanted to hear it again. Then John said, "They actually write this stuff!" Then I got it!! From then on, I was hooked and, he later said to my singer that I understand Beefheart's music better than HE does!!

  • RIP CAPTIN ;_;

  • Farewell to an incredible legend.

  • And now he is gone (12/17/2010) R.I.P. Mr. Van Vliet...

  • R.I.P. Don,,,, you brought sounds into peoples lives that forever changed the breadth and depth of their appreciation of music. Your records will never grow old.

  • R.I.P. and thank you.

    You nourished many minds.

The earth will be all the better for having received your remains.

  • There'll never be another Don Vliet

  • R.I.P. Don.

  • RIP Cap'an

  • RIP Capt. Beefheart, the only music that frightened me. One evening in 1970, while navigating through a fairly heavy trip, Capt. Beefheart came on the stereo. It scared the shit out of me.

When I wasn't tripping, then I really discovered his music.

  • A shooting star has crossed our horizon and passed upon the my oh my.

  • Ride Captain,ride-thank you for your work...

  • I remember seeing him on Letterman several years ago. Have yet to explore his music and have been meaning to for years....now would obviously be a good time. BTW, Letterman asked him where he came up with his name, and he said it was because he had a beef (in his heart) with the world--i.e., the world's sad state of affairs, etc.

  • RIP-you will be missed

  • RIP ... goodbye & thank you for the unbelievable music.

  • RIP

  • Never seen this before, thanks so much for posting it. And thanks Don Van Vliet for the music, you crazy wonderful old bastard...RIP

  • now theres an interesting person.Id like to meet Beefheart.

  • Was present at the live recording w/ Frank Zappa at Armadillo World HQ in '76.The album was Bongo Fury.Funny, awesome as it was,I don't remember.

  • bongo fury was mighty fine i must agree no credit from the liquor store one of my favs

  • Ok to be honest I fucking love beefheart but Madonna and MIchael Jackson are undeniably influential. I actually wouldn't be shocked if he does get inducted. Although they tend to wait too long with the more out their acts.

  • Finally, the secret revealed. Frank and Don suffered ergot intoxication at an early age from stale pineapple buns in the bread truck!

    That sure explains a lot...

  • Was gonna be Don for halloween, anyone know where to get some clothes like his? any websites?

  • too bad beefheart and zappa didn't record more music together, Bongo Fury was my personal favorite of both artists.

  • hey its james brolin at 2:08

Loved his constant doodling.I made a block print for him inspired from his "Safe as Milk" album. Don let me know if you need another copy. Loved that sticker that came in the album with the funny baby on it back in the late 60's.

  • @ABOSS302 Loved all your Friday concerts at the AV Fairgrounds that the Cordials put on.

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting this documentary. I have been a Beefheart fanatic for decades- ever since hearing "ashtray heart" on wfmu at about 6 am, when my radio alarm clock went off. I was 15 yrs old. I might have been hallucinating but I could swear Beefheart said " you treat me like an ashtray heart- you put your cigarettes out on my aorta" (spoken) but have never heard a version like that since, and neither has anyone else I have asked.... rare version or hallucination? I don't know...
