A discourse upon reality and coming to awareness by thwarting imposed ignorance, not merely a scene in a movie. Much as the train station scene in The Matrix.
Does anybody know the meaning of "The Seventh Seal"?
This film is about salvation through love and spiritual faith. The happy family survival was a miracle by the Virgin Mary. The Knight was the designated Angel. His knowledge was not accompanied by personal faith, but was a vital instrument in the salvation of the loving and faithful family. And above all, innocent, without sin.
@poli4007 It's in reference to a bit from the Book of Revelation, and quoted in the start of the film and near the end. The quote: "And when the Lamb had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour". This theme starts here & continues into some of his other films. "Through The Glass, Darkly", etc. Hope this helps some.
@PlayIt4MeAgainSam Thanks a lot. Very helpful. Apparently it refers to the "end of times" and "the last judgment". The lamb would represent Jesus. It is so great that the only survivors, the couple and the baby, are the only loving, innocent ones, who live life in its simplicity . It was a miracle under the protection of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus, who are seen by the man, as his wife playfully makes fun of his visions. I don't remember and need to watch again the Knight's visit to them.
Bergman would turn over in his grave if he saw this interpretation. This film was his rebellion against religion - it's about finding joy and value in a meaningless world, without having to invent a higher purpose in form of a God. It is about standing up to and dealing with your own insignificance - not about chickening out.
@eddie1207 I didn't name the film out of the Book of Revelation(Bible). I didn't write a script killing all SINNERS (yes sir, SINNERS) by the plague.Except for the innocent couple who DOES FIND JOY AND VALUE IN A MEANINGLESS WORLD. I didn't invent the vision of Virgin Mary, who makes miracles. The Knight didn't chicken out, and did have higher purposes, tricking Death to save the couple's lives from the SINNERS. Read the Book of Revelation IF YOU CAN. Youmay get it. Sorry Bergman, RIP.
@eddie1207 Bergman was not a rebel and his films were not pamphlets. His films show life as it is. Like any real genius does. He shows the reality of the Middle Ages. God was a reality in the lives of many. Like it or not. Bergman starts and finishes the film citing the biblical Book of Revelations, like it or not. There cannot be joy, value in a meaningless world! Meaning is found in the joy, value of a simple life. Bergman related such life with the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus.Like or not.
Can someone help me? I'm looking for a song that was playing in the background of a Seventh Seal video someone uploaded but has since been removed. I think the uploader removed it because most people disliked it. It was an unusual avant-garde jazz kind of song.
If anyone has the faintest idea of what I'm talking about, I'd much appreciate help finding it.
This film is a masterpiece!!!!!!! did you realize what is the main idea of the movie??what's about this film ??? if you realize you just can't say that this film is a boring
Whenever I come back to this film I'm always surprised by how much humor is in it compared to the other Bergman films I've seen. It was nice when I rewatched this in film class, and it had the whole theaterlaughing : )
you guys know that the man playing chess with death is max von sydow, who played the old preist in the exorcist? e really cool actor, along with peter stormare and stellan skarsgård he is a good reason for us swedes to be proud of our men in hollywood. :)
The movie is quite a bit different. Perhaps this trailer gives you the illusion that they tell the story. This trailer even contains one ''error''(probably on purpose, for fun), namely: the knight doesn't throw over the chess pieces on purpose. At least that's my view of it, and I've seen it 5 times. Go check it out for your self. In my opinion this trailer is not a spoiler, but a teaser. One of the best movies I've ever seen!
He does throw the chess pieces on purpose, to give time not only to himself, but to the others with him. In that time, the actor flees with his wife and child.
Just pay attention how is simple his way to talk about serious things. And how many deep these thoughts. For example Lars (von trier) can talk about one thing during 2,5 hours, Bergman can do the same during 2 minutes. I am storyteller too, and i was really impressed how is simple he can talk about many many things and how easy he do it. And by the way there many humour too. Brilliant picture! Real masterpiece.
@veganthrope My thoughts exactly......I was looking for a trailer for this film to send to a friend, in the hopes of getting her excited about the prospect of watching it...but I wasnt expecting to find a trailer that was going to basically be a synopsis for the entire film!!! LOL! I guess they had no concept of "Spoilers" back in those days huh? Imagine if the guy who made this had also made the trailer for Citizen Kane! ".....unitl at the end in a shocking twist we find out Rosebud is..." LOL
@mlpc83 I agree with you. According to some youtube fans of "Wallender" (which is a great series) Bergmans work is regarded as tedious by young Swedes today. What a shame.
Yeah, was just about to see it, its 99,5% now - and I watched the trailer to check it out. Damn fucking trailer spoiled the whole movie. Idiots sucked at trailers back in the 50's.
The Seventh Seal 'contains some of the most extraordinary images ever committed to celluloid'(Time Out). Ingrid Bergman is possibly the Shakespeare of cinema, and like his other masterpieces this is a must-see for any fan of serious films.
But strawberries and milk are good! Even if, combined, they disagree with some sensitive stomachs like mine. Even those on the J. Arthur Rank diet will pop their very neatly arranged clogs too on 'that day'!
Why do old trailers always spoil everything?

då skulle du istället skriva "It's supposed to be 14th century, not 13th" för att britter o amerikanare skulle tolka rätt.
