According to the book, Mountain Man by Vardis Fisher, her husband was captured by the Indians, very probably tortured to death, and the children, two boys and a girl, were killed when the Indians attacked. The boy did not survive in the book. I highly recommend reading the book to feel the depth and richness of the story.
