the diminished thing you probably hear is him playing D7 -> D6 at the end of the progression

@PissGeneration Since the capo is on the second fret, the chords are actually B major (open A chord form), to F# minor (open E minor form), to E7 (open D7 form). Numerically, that is I - v minor - IV7 ... you are right about hearing the diminished sound because the IV7 chord contains a tritone (diminished 5th).
