It takes a certain type of personality to have the patience to draw like this, particularly an intense need for precision/perfection. The goal of most "how to" art videos/workshops is to teach you something that you actually could do realistically. I think very few people could actually do this technique because they'd go insane in the process. But the DVD would be worth buying maybe simply because it'd be fascinating to watch her work. It is impressive.
@pumkin54 You are exactly right. It really does take a certain type of personality to have the patience for this. I don't have that personality, which gives me a greater appreciation for when I see this type of work mastered. It really is amazing.
@TheSoulreaper9 Learn how and it won't take you ten years. Coloring pencils have some cool effects hard to get with oil paint. Of course, the reverse is also true. Each medium has its own charms and challenges.
to get these results your color pencils have to as sharp as possible. but no matter how much I try my goddamn prismacolor won't sharpen properly. they keep breaking when I sharpen them D:<
If you draw something with color pencils and then decide later that you'd like to highlight some of it with white, what kind of tool can be used? Any?
@DistincTHD Thanks so much for your reply. However the white colored pencils, like Prismacolor, I have used at best lighten the area somewhat, not enough to cause any significant highlights. Am I missing out on another kind of white pencil that can do it? (I've gotten desperate and resorted to "White-Out" typing paper strips. It does work great & holds up over time but doesn't make me feel very artisitic. Lol..) Next stop...check out electric erasers.
@DistincTHD P.S. I see a wide range in prices for electric erasers on Amazon. Is there any that you think is best. I'd rather pay less of course, but if there is truly a great deal of difference beween the cheapy & pricey... Thanks so much again for your help.
@LoricaLady Im in the UK and i'd say its between Derwent (a very well known brand) or Jakar (an unknown brand which is more expensive than derwent's one) so its down to your opinion
Ugh these people with videos like this make art look boring, and for old people, when the fact is art can be fun, easy, quick, and not so tiime consuming.
The three top colored pencil artists in the world are Charles Bell (who primarily worked in oils), Gordon Parrish (no relation to artist and illustrator Maxfield Parrish), and Douglas Wise. Bell focused upon still life, Parrish focuses upon rural landscape, and Wise focuses upon still life, and urban and rural landscape. All three artists' works are Photorealism, or Hyper-Realism.
@samuraigraffix Janie uses electric pencil sharpeners. She likes the Panasonic KP-310, which is unfortunately no longer available, but she likes other battery powered models from Panasonic and Berol Apsco. You can download a list of Janie's recommended tools on her artist page at the Creative Catalyst website.
Apology accepted. Anyone who delights in any form of drawing or painting (or many other artistic expressions, including photography) will tell you that the pleasure, the sense of accomplishment you get from a piece or art goes has little to do with making an exact replica of the model. The pleasure comes from the creative process as much as the final product, if not more.
I ordered this DVD and the sister DVD. They are wonderful! She walks you through the colors she uses and explains why she is using it, which is useful as I am always surprised by the color choices of professional artists. It is an absolutely wonderful set of DVDs. I very much encourage anyone who wishes to use colored pencil as a medium to order these videos.
I wish like hell I could get my Prismacolors to blend with that kind of photo-realistic smoothness - no matter how much I burnish them, I can STILL see the damn paper.....
@AnnihilatingAngel thats because burnishing isnt the main part. Layering is important for a good realistic effect. Burnishing is a technique you dont want to use much. You need paper with a good tooth. Computer paper is crap.
@AnnihilatingAngel Try a Colorless Blender Marker if you aren't already. I have pretty good success making the colors blend and look almost like watercolor paints!
@badbuttify Oh, I use the colorless blender - and the white pencil. And the mineral spirits....lol. Part of the trouble is the fact that I make ACEOs: the small size of the images magnify every tiny inconsistency.
perhaps one of the slowest techniques you can use... amazing looking though
