your card is worth $250, the 5870 is $420 and up. and the difference is a third monitor support ( which not many people use) and direct X11 (which is only supported by an updated version of Windows Vista and Windows 7. other than that, the core clock speeds are pretty similar, I would say its only worth it if you're upgrading from a lower performance card than the HD4890. so you should just stick to yours for now.

Well Nvidia are behind the game now with the release of the HD 5890, that is now the fastest gfx card on the planet. Will retail for around 600 US. I think I will buy two of these instead though to replace my 8800 gtx xxx when the prices drop for xmas that is!

dude the gtx 295 is a dual gpu the 5870 is not being benchmarked against that , it smokes the gtx285 i and i know i just upgraded from that to the ati , but the most important thing is windows does not use SLI in normal use to u are only using one gpu with the gtx 295 so u infact only have a gtx270 , also ati cards work better in windows

You are right. The 5870 is a major leap forward for the 4870. You are also right about the driver issue. I used to run all ATI but got so sick of waiting for driver fixes. Look the only point I was trying to make was NVIDIA cards over all are a much better choice, especially for enthusiasts like me.

Let me correct myself. Seems alot/all are having problems with low test scores and low performance with the new AMD cards. Some are getting as low as 11500 with a 5870. So ya, $100 less for less performance seem right. Like I said GTX295 is still better.

I get over 22000 3DMark scores with my 295, all the 5870's i've seen barely get 14000. Plus alot of people are saying they just aren't getting out of their 5870's what ATI are claiming the card does. I have forgoten more about PC's then u'll ever know.

I'll just point out that, nvidia, seems to target more on benchmarking then actual real world use. Im not going to say ATi has not done so, but nvidia has repeatedly been caught cheating in 3d mark with workaround in their drivers. And yes I would keep my $100 for a max of 10% of a performance hit. They even rebranded the 8 series to the 9 series.......

You can get 50k 3dmark points and still not be able to play tetris at 5fps. It was just a bad benckmarking program.

The Fermi cards will be out in les than two months and will make the AMD card look like handheld consoles. ATI's policy = each card will never ask for more than 300watts (unless u oc)~

so if you have 2 cards at 100% loads, they will not need more than 600 watts i guess~ ;p

so if you want to crossfire, get a PSU with at least 700watts~

i'm using 650watts for cf and the psu gets very hot cos its max psu load~ if i have 850watts instead, the psu will be cooler cos its not 100% for the psu~

You know, ATI did an incredible job in outperforming Nvdias GTX295. How come Nvidia isn't showing what they have, they're doing nothing at all, no advetising, they don't even talk about it. The COs at Nvidia must be pissed off. If Nvidia is to make a come back, they better have a quadcore GPU, but I don't think they're going to make it.

They're not. Not for a long time at least. Only 5% of the current GT 300 series being developed actually work, the rest fail.

I use nVidia so I'm a little bit annoyed with this, and I don't know if my mobo supports Crossfire, otherwise I'd probably switch to ATI right now.

I prefer AMD to Intel, and Nvidia to ATI. Ironic considering ATI uses AMD chips, heh.

Its insane whats going on right now, Nvidia is strugling, ATI marged with AMD and they seem to be doing just fine. The new series 5000 is unbelieveable, they beated their own cards, the 4870x2 pairs with it, barely. If they manage to make a x2 version I don't even know how much perfomance we can get. And that's where your wrong.With 3 (24") monitors, Eyeinfinity expands the picture to 5760x1200 and there's actually minimal performance drop while doing it.Treating the 3 monitors as one monitor allows the card to more efficient in producing the display. P.S You said 5120x3600, im guessing that your retarded or know nothing about display resolutions.With 3 monitors and Eye infinity you only add the resolution width of the monitor,because the height will stay the same. 1920x1200 X 3 = 5760x1200.
