I just barely remember Jack Benny from when I was young. I used to imitate him, "Oh Rochester." I see why people liked him so much from this small clip. Funny man.
What an absolutely brilliant man he was. The true meaning of comedy - able to not say a word and still get a laugh! This was the best mystery guest on WML! @LEIMALOCCA - Totally agree!
I've watched this clip maybe 30 times over the past year and laugh out loud each time. Quick question: what does Daly say at 4:01? "We had a real problem [blank]... I can't hear that last word.
Example of careful comedy planning: when Benny said that he wanted to ( 5:02 ) buy confederate money from the first contestant, he did appear after the commercial break briefly, with money in hand.
GSN ugh! -- what with that banner cluttering up the image and a hand! polishing the logo. All the good taste of Venus deMilo with a clock in her stomach. Congress should make itself useful and restrict networks from obscuring images with ads, especially historic images.
It's easy to miss Bennett's reply to Benny after he says he wants to buy some of the confederate money: "Pay off your cast with it". A running gag on Benny's show was how cheap he was and how little he paid his cast members (which wasn't true in real life, just part of his stage persona). Typical example:
Glamourous, you bet! Hard to think of another person who could get away with socking Daly on live TV. ( 2:30 ) Only time I can remember.
Fortunately YouTube has good Jack Benny clips for those who don't know him and his comic brilliance. OTR has large collections of his radio show, which I find more funny than ever.
4:50 -- RE Waukegan, IL: There is a story, may be true, that a kid attending Jack Benny Elementary School once asked Benny why he was named after their school.
I love this! What a great time.......as long as you were white

Jack writes Heifitz who was a world famous violinist. Jack was spoofing his schtick about his violin playing.

Actually I forgot, Bennett mentions him and another violinist in guessing who it is.

Oh Jack, I never tire of you.
What does Jack write at the beginning and what does it mean?
Xmchord 3 years ago
@Xmchord He writes the name "Heifetz." Jascha Heifetz was a famous violinist.

Funny stuff!

Daly said: "We had a real problem to tussle with." and then describes the problems they anticipated disguising Benny's voice.
tus·sle Pronunciation: \ˈtə-səl\
1 : a physical contest or struggle
*** 2 : an intense argument, controversy, or struggle

Thanks- I'm familiar with tussle, just couldn't hear the word clearly.
So nice to have such a HQ version on You Tube- probably my favourite clip of all-time.

Rochester: "Yeah, and I wonder when."
