The idea is that she lives at the other side of Paris (The West is the richer side and the East, the poorer) so it takes her a while to get at the lady's place. Thats why she wakes up so early to drop her own kid at the nursery. But then, when she gets to her workplace, the lady tells her that she will be 1h-1hand a half late. Which is why she hesitates before answering. She's probably thinking of her own kid that will wait longer.
@lovederbs Lady: "Thank goodness you're here, I'm running late and I have to go now (along those lines)"
"Also, I won't be home for dinner, you don't mind do you?"
Ana: "What beautiful hands that I have, so beautiful and white that God gave me. What beautiful eyes that I have, so beautiful and black, that God gave me. What a beautiful mouth that I have, so beautiful and red that God gave me. What beautiful feet that I have, so beautiful and chubby that God gave me. "
@TatianaMontenegrov I think it's trying to show the sadness and irony in how migrant workers have to work for other people and not see their families for long periods of time just to earn enough money for their families (like how the woman takes care of someone else's baby just to support her own). While this woman lives just on the other side of town, I know a lot of migrant women in Paris who had to leave their children in other countries for years to support them.
Lovely clip thanks for posting. For those who don't speak french: the voice on the interphone asks if it is Ana, before letting her in. The voice we hear as Ana is putting her bag in the cupboard says, brusquely that she is late and has to go and for ana to call her at lunch time to tell her how the morning went. She adds casually that she will be late that evening, an hour, maybe an hour and a quarter and asks if that is a problem. Ana's face crumples and she says no problem.
"que linda manita que tengo yo, que linda y blanquita que dios me dio. Que lindos ojitos que tengo yo, que lindos y negritos que dios me dio. Que linda boquita que tengo yo que linda y rojita que dios me dio. Que lindas patitas que tengo yo, que lindas y gorditas que dios me dio"
@femmefatale1990 adding "ito" or "ita" at the end of a word makes it "little". it's how you might speak to children. You might ask an adult "cuantos anos tienes?" but to a kid you might ask "cuantos anitos tienes?"
In English: "what a pretty hand I have, how pretty and white that god gave me. What beautiful little eyes I have, how beautiful and black that god gave me. What beautiful little lips i have, how beautiful and red that god gave me. What beautiful little legs that I have, how beautiful
@interactiveleaf Yes, that's what she's saying but it's a mispronunciation b/c the word hand (mano) in Spanish is feminine and she ends it with an "o". I guess she's mimicking children's mistakes.
uff!

I always thought this was so beautiful but so sad. She sings the same lullaby to her employers baby but all the time shes thinking of hers.
