  • and who says you need your pinky finger to shred like fuck?

  • Kinda dumb to do "Paul Gilbert style" quick licks based on piece composed in style of Yngwie.. Some Racer X/Mr. Big backing track would've been more useable for this one for sure

  • i has been looking for that black rubber band on guitar center but they dont know nothing about it... where can i get one? regards

  • @charlybrown2043 Hi, its just a plain black hair band, you can get hold of one from any hair accessory shop. Hope that helps you out!

  • @charlybrown2043 Claire's has got millions. They're called "bobbles". Dunno why. They just are.

  • excelent! :D what guitar is that dude?

  • RON PAULl for president !!!!!!!! THE TRUTH !!!

  • so....i've been watching Andy James videos for past two hours..anyone with me?

  • viking kong!!!

  • This is a"viking kong"style and Paul said he wrote this song because he want to do a Yngwie style

  • the link on the intro looks like cry of the blackbirds by amon amarth :)

  • Some of the quick licks are hit and miss, and this one doesn't really get the gilbert feel.....but it DOES kinda sound like Viking Kong at parts, though!

  • maybe like petruci but that one my friend ain't sound nothing like Gilbert

  • What tune is it in? standard?

  • viking kong?

  • viking kong much

  • not enough string skipping lmao

  • Just wanna ask, what is the purpose of that black kinda rubber or strap on the second fret on the neck of his guitar? I've seen some guitarist use that strap.. and I just want to know if it has an important purpose in soloing.. need answers thanks :)

  • @ehnzoh Hi there, Andy James this is a hair band, the purpose of it is to mute out any unwanted noise when his playing fast parts, it gives you guys a clearer phrase to help when teaching. Some guitarists use them when recording and here at the Licklibrary studio it works perfectly.

  • @licklibrary yeah that's right dude:)..

  • Paul Gilbert uses way more techniques in every song, this guy repeats phrases too often with the same techniques over and over. Still sounds good, just doesn't really remind me of Gilbert.

  • first time i listened to Andy James .......

crazy skillz man...... super clean playing.... *****

  • I don't see his pinky hit the fretboard, it sounds good, that I mean his technique. The guitarsound is too digital, too.. over-effected or something. Gilbert used that very raw but strong sound..

  • sound viking kong

  • 2:19-2:30 holy balls thats incredibly fast! its really melodic too..

  • @loki8lelouch7 you think THAT is really fast??? /watch?v=sVHVXopRmI8 this is the faster guitar player on the world, HE's fast

  • Sounds like Viking Kong...

  • only someone tht hv been blessed by paul gilbert can play like him xD

  • nothing like paul gilbert, paul uses his pinky henceforth the length

  • its pointless to even attempt to cover paul gilbert

  • really great guitarist... but this is hardly paul gilbert... the video is more yngwie malmsteen-ish...

  • he is fuuuuuuuck

  • use the Fucking PINKY bitch!!!

  • Can you please do a Buckethead lick video!

  • wath is the use of the black string on the second fret here 1:22 ???

  • @3922378742 It's some kind of string dampener. It helps mute the string that you dont want to pick so if you accidentally pick the wrong string, the string dampener would mute the unwanted sound. :D FOR ME though, if you want to learn some paul gilbert stuff, don't use a string dampener. It will help you become more accurate. That's just my opinion. I hope this helps :D

  • could someone tell me what guitar he's using?

  • Why no pinky?

  • im guna buy this.

  • rarely uses his pinky.. not like P.G..

  • Andy, what do you use to dampen your strings? Is it just a hair band or a special Andy James patented string dampener?

  • Paul Gilbert has a Long Pinky, this guy has a Long Ring Finger :O

  • holy shit 2:15

  • viking kong...

  • what is this black stripe on the neck ? Is this some kind of strings silencer?

  • @PaczkA2266627

    Scrunchy to silence strings, yeah.

  • Ironical, but that song is Yngwie Malmsteen style, still made by Paul Gilbert. So not really Paul Gilbert style.

  • So. Umm. He makes me wanna give up sometimes.

  • Do you guys have an Andy James quick licks?

  • lol very bad sound; Is Viking Kong?soooo farr to original style

  • for intermediate-advanced players? come on, i think paul gilbert stuff IS very advanced

  • how about an andy james quick licks, maybe id get as good as hit

  • I request a greg howe quick licks dvd!

  • What is Andy's setup? Amps, effects, Pedals, etc.......... Thanks :)

  • I love his guitar!

  • Alright baby!

  • where the hell is the "quick licks" ANDY JAMES STYLE?!!!

  • okay firstly andy is soo cool! hes such a clean player. I was wondering what sort of gear he uses mainly the amp. I was looking at this ltd/ESP but with the floyd rose trem but it was £100 out of my price range :/

  • hi have you got a slash likcks dvd or something similar

  • @IGLIAS1 Hi yes we do have a Slash Quick Licks dvd - if you head to our website by following the link in the description then type in the search bar 'slash quick licks' it should come up in the results. Will send you a link directly to it via you youtube email. Hope that helps!

  • @licklibrary

    for me too pls

  • any one know what that band he has around the end of his neck is called and for? you can see it at 1:20- 1:34

  • @UltimaWeaponKHII It makes the strings quieter to avoid fret buzz etc..

  • Hi, what guitar do you use? On this video?

  • pls make a learn to play paul gilbert dvd

  • This guy doesnt even use his pinky -_-... Noob...

  • @HeavenDown914 lol i really hope you're joking xD this guy is pulling off everything and more then someone who uses all 4 fingers does. just listen to what he's doin dont watch it.

and like i said before he still has 20x more skill than the majority of frequent pinky users

  • This guy's pinky is almost non-existent. Oh well, for 3 fingers, he plays like he uses all 4! Great stuff!

  • How can you play so clean?

  • hey guys i got a question... is there the possibility to make a quick licks buckethead dvd?

  • @GetaKillSwitch Hi there, we have started a new section on our website for DVD suggestions - you can head over there and enter your suggestions in, I'll send you an email now with the link. Hope this helps!

  • @licklibrary do u mind sending me the link to?

  • @GetaKillSwitch dude buckethead s pretty much the same as paul gilbert

  • @olivierjaquet Hell to the no.

  • @GetaKillSwitch YEAAAAAAAAAAAH THAT IS TRUE!!! A BUCKETHEAD STYLE LICKS!! PLEASE!!!!! OR.. IT´S MORE DIFFICULT THAN ALL THE OTHER MUSICIANS HA?

  • Sorry, it doesn't sound like PG, well a little bit at some parts but else, I think it doesn't :S - Good playing though

  • that's insane!!

  • difficulty level.... Intermediate-advanced... WTF is ADVANCED only then?!!?!?!?? holy shit

  • Learn To Play Andy James...?

  • VIKING KONG!!!

  • the intro lick sounds like the beginning from Hands Without Shadowes (Michael Angelo Batio)

  • "Learn to play Paul Gilbert"!!!!!!!!!! I´m waiting for it...

  • that's technical difficulties!

  • sounds more like malmsteen

  • that sounds like a combination of Paul Gilbert and Yngwie Malmsteen. And I suppose that the only one who can teach us how to play in the style of Paul Gilbert is Paul Gilbert himself!

  • It's all a bit wanky. Very impressive but if u play fast and clever through an entire song, there's no light and shade. Nothing to look forward to or gasp in awe to...

  • dudes got a pinky but it doesnt seem like he really needs it too much guys

  • I need one in NZ!!!!!!!

  • is this guitar tone tube? it sounds digital to me and i have been curious about it for awhile now bc i have been using these dvd's since i started playing.

  • paul also used his pinky

  • You know, you have a pinkey too

  • Funny how Viking Kong is used to highlight Paul Gilbert's style because Paul said he was thinking of doing a duet with Malmsteen when he wrote the song and did use elements of Malmsteens style in that song.

  • impressive.

  • this guy is good but he will be shitting in his pants if PAUL GILBERT starts playing in front of him!

  • What's the name of the first lick?

  • Why does everyone ask for tabs??? Go to fucking Google and type in guitar tabs...there are many websites that provide all the tabs you need.

  • What about Learn to Play Buckethead video or maybe quick licks? I didn't saw it and I think it's a good idea.

  • It's based on Viking Kong of Paul Gilbert..so, if you're trying to tell everyone here that the intro is wrong..YOU NEED SOME KIND OF MEDICATION..!!

  • the intro to the song is wrong

  • intro is a cry of the black birds rip off!!! :o

  • i spied sweeping, paul never sweeps

  • @thelordofdarkcheese 'never'? im pretty sure ive seen him do it more than once

  • yeah,no sweat.

  • skill level intermediate? your kidding right? its a good thing you said leaning towards the more advanced level cuz if u were serious about intermediate i might have had to just shut this off immeediately.

  • tab of song?

  • @saabronz unfortunately there are no tabs with this song. Andy teaches you short licks from the entire song so you can learn bit by bit note for note. Showing exatly where to place your fingers and how to play the notes.

  • this guy is amazing, really... if i still played i'd definitely be getting this dvd... you're not gonna find too many guys that will cover stuff this cleanly and offer video's for it

  • this guy kicks ass.....btw can u get this dvd in msia?????

  • @patrick0hardstyler Hi there we deliever directly to malayasia - just place your order on our site - follow the links in the description.

  • @patrick0hardstyler lol download la diiuuu dont have access to internet? TM Net !

  • is there a song like this by paul gilbert? or hes just playing random riffs like paul?

  • @Bj0RNare Not necessarily random riffs, but he's playing with the same kind of shapes, scales, and techniques that Paul is so well known for.

  • any body gotta tab to this opening lick?

  • mmmh... Just A question.. Where's "Paul Gilbert"?? All i see is a guy playing kickass things (He's very good, I've to admit) but this... man, have nothing to do with paul gilbert... There's nothing in this video that remind me Paul's Style and Technique..

    Nice Playing anyway

  • @Eviltiaz If you read the description of our channel and the video it says this is from our DVD 'Quck Licks in the style of Paul Gilbert by Andy James'

  • @Eviltiaz this has exactly the same harmonic progression of viking kong :)

  • @Eviltiaz the very first part of this video sounds exactly like paul gilbert's song Viking Kong. Just check that out. It's a badass song.

  • @Eviltiaz you don't think that sounds like paul gilbert???

  • @Eviltiaz i disagree. This sounds alot like classic gilbert.

  • @Eviltiaz Well I thought the same at the beginning, but after listening to the latest Paul Gilbert work I found a lot of resemblance. Those bluesy licks at 1:30 are brand of Paul latest years style. And besides there are some parts that I´m pretty sure he took from "Snakebite" and "super heroes" solos.

    Greeting :)

  • @Eviltiaz go and check out Viking Kong by Gilbert

  • @Eviltiaz dude what are you talking about? hes playing viking kong by paul gilbert?

  • I absolutely agree.

  • @Eviltiaz are you kidding me? did you even see the string skipping, the super technical alternate picked fillers, or the riffs played in different octaves, and btw only paul gilbert can sound exactly like paul gilbert

  • @MikeBassil this guy is better...

  • LOL -- Intermediate, leaning more towards advanced.

Seems like this should be a level past advanced.

  • imma have to download this

  • yeah, now play it without the hairband, cheater...

  • @skatefallen15 Shut the fuck up!

  • @skatefallen15 yeah i noticed that too lol.

  • IM VERY SERIOUS ABOUTH THIS.. Andy should do a Jason Becker Video that would be awesome....stuff from his perpetual burn album PLEASE LICK LIBRARY MENTION IT TO HIM OR TELL ME WHO TO ASK THIS FROM... Thank you

  • @shredfactor7 Hi there thanks for the comment! if you would like to make a suggestion head over to our forum where we collect all dvd requests, I'll send you an email now with the correct link to it. Hope that helps.

  • @shredfactor7 I agree with you OVER 9000%

  • are there any other backing tracks included/used in this DVD?

  • @GerMaj7th hi there, there is only one backing track with this DVD. head to the link in the description if your after it. hope that helps.

  • @licklibrary thanks for the reply. I was hoping there would be some of Paul's other-styled licks, such as his more bluesy-ish rather than just harmonic/minor

  • i love it

    !!!!

  • Amazing playing. Really like that guitar too. That and the EC-1000VB he uses just look great, IMO!

  • I love how the playing example in the beginning is Paul Gilbert interpreting Yngwie Malmsteen's playing style. All that harmonic minor/diminished/sweeping/ wankery isn't Paul. It's Paul trying to sound like Malmsteen. Only a few of the examples in this video even come close to sounding like Paul's licks. Watch one of the 50 thousand videos done by Paul Gilbert if you want to learn how to play like Paul Gilbert.

  • One thing to say ... respect ...

  • A scrunchy

  • Really hard, nearly impossible to copy Paul Gilbert, he is the definition of unique guitar.

  • NICE GUITARIST BUT USE MORE 4th FINGER FOR LOOK

  • the lick at 2:25 was perty frickin sweet

  • its not really a paul gilbert style but cool licks

  • scarry good

  • sounds like Yngwie Malmsteen

  • "Learn To Play Paul Gilbert" PLEASE!!!! Quick Licks John Petrucci and Richie Kotzen... I know Andy can do it, I'm sure...

  • needs more epic phrasing

  • a capooo??

  • :O love the skipping at 1:15

  • What is the band called near the nut he is using to silence the strings?

  • @mikeydude1994 Its a hair band - if you go to our channel page we just uploaded a video where Andy James is describing why he uses one.

  • Not that much Paul in this...Wheres the Staccato? Palm muting? This is more steve\yngwie than paul...

  • has anyone ever noticed how good andy himself is? he put together billions of DVDs, plus has a superb technique and a smooth vibrato.

  • @MParseface38 yer hes a fluid player. hes got the best of both worlds. awesome technique and some sweet controlled vibrato

  • um...for an "'in the style of" dvd, they probabaly shouldent use a riff from a song that he wrote in the style of yngwie malmsteen lol

  • i'd like to know what the first song he plays is?

  • its called viking kong

  • no the first song isnt viking kong

  • Paul Gilbert does a bunch of his own Videos and he is great at teaching as well as playing, so I recommend getting those over anyone else copying. can't say the same for many other artists.

  • why did he strap a ribbon on his guitar neck?

  • Incase he accidently hits an open note it will be damped. A lot of neoclassical players use those, especially when they're doing tapping licks.

  • it mutes the strings so when your doing tapping its sounds much cleaner and quieter, ala Jennifer Batten

  • i think he shouldnt have taken viking kong because its not the greatest song to represent pauls playing. I think he should have taken something like technical difficulties or scarified. Or something like hurry up. Just not Viking kong because he made it to play it with yngwie malmsteen

  • @charleseladas Its not viking kong, its based upon the song but the melody has been altered and none of the solo's in that song feature in this representation of Paul's playing. This is not a learn to play paul gilbert otherwise I would have covered the songs you mentioned. Maybe that might happen one day, who knows.

  • he plays realy great... but why he doesn't use the 4th finger

  • What are you talking about? Just look at the riff in the beginning - he's using it all the time

  • We were talking about the soloing, gilbert's left hand fingering are completely different but andy's playing is beyond amazing.

  • he does, but he uses it sparingly, probably just cause he knows its slightly slower then his other fingers

  • who cares -_-

  • Why is that such a big deal to people? His playing is amazing without using his 4th finger a lot.

  • It's very accurate concerning the notes but not for the fingerings, gilbert uses the pinky alot more.

  • @therox68

Paul Gilbert said it himself: who cares what your fingers are doing, as long as it sounds cool.

I have the DVD and as far as Paul Gilbert's playing style is concerned, he nailed it perfectly
