Jesus that sounded really good. What the fuck was that? Laney head with master volume and Marshall cab with Greenbacks? Can't believe you achieved that tone at such a low volume...really impressive!
Eddie uses it a lot in summer nights, it's that warm kind of sound. For people who have colour memory, as in they see colour for sound, it's kind of brownish.
I dig that clip man; funny enough, I got an old mullard from tramp that I just cannot seem to replicate with any other tube. Brown as hell, and none of my others seem to come close
No variac. I've tried a variac - the variac doesn't really change the tone, it makes what's already there sound more mushy and spongy. And if you go low enough, it sends the amp into class B and then it gets kind of buzzy. One day I will post some variac clips to compare them.
i dont agree with the part of the sound not changing when used with a variac. marshalls in particular love to get teased with voltage changes. i could get any sound with just a guitar, good cable, good speakers and a variac
@crumbfish if i recall correctly the variac was used to reduce feedback at higher volumes. it meant you could drive the amp at a lower volume without having to crank it and worry about feedback. I was lucky enough to be able to try it and the only difference was the amount of feedback i was able to get at a higher volume. Great playing by the way brother, keep it up
dude i have a marshall thats only a year old and i can get the tone of EVH and it on has 3 knobs and ur saying thats not awesome sir i say something is wrong with ur brain
because i HIGHLY doubt you can... nobody can get THE brown sound out of a solid state amp(unless your using like a wampler pedal or something), especially if its just a cheap little marshall solid state amp. i love marshall amps, and i have a jcm2000tsl, but the marshall name isn't everything.
ya, just as i thought.... some kid just starting to learn how to play who really doesn't understand.... (which was me like 4 years ago, so i definitely can realize now..)
dude i swear it has the brown sound but is the EXACT sound no because its not the 1960 and it duznt use tubes and no i dont use any pedals just like EVH
oh god thats the sorriest lookin marshall cabinet ive ever see eddie's looked better and they overdriven so badly and he had it for 14 years before he made the 5150s
Mullard xf2 EL34's. The best output tubes I have tried in this amp were a set of clear bottle Genelex gold lion KT66's. The tone was amazing. I ended up selling the KT's when I needed the cash a couple of years ago.
Can't help you with settings, but neither this nor the real Eruption were played on a 5150/6505. Eddie used a Plexi, I believe (I doubt he ever REALLY used the 5150 anyway, but that's just conjecture). I hate to say it, but I doubt the vintage Van Halen sound is anywhere in your amp.
I have a 6505, and while it is a great amp it is not the 5150 head. The 6505 is modelled after the 5150 II head. Can't say for sure about the 5150 but the 6505 has a scoop to the preamp, compared to a plexi, that you CAN NOT break through stock. GO find a GOOD 68' plexi clone and practice. That's how to get Ed's tone. : ) Green Backs help too. ; )
In no way does this guys tone nail van halens. However, his technique is absolutely amazing and he pulls VH off flawlessly. EVH gets 90% of his tone in his fingers anyways. This is amazing stuff...keep it up!!!
That my friends is a awesome example of re amping!! take a kick ass tone and re amp it! And of course the Fishman nailing some ed to the tee!1 good job brother!!
hes right listen to the tone not the playing and you will realize that its actually very diferent from EVH. its the playing that makes it sound like EVH. if he played acdc or something like that you wouldnt even think about the tone from EVH.
that is low volume for checking noise floor of the preamp tubes

crumbfish 2 years ago
supposedly EVH used a plexi stock, with a variac running at 90 Volts though...plus a dummy load (20 ohms) to take the volume down.

damn nice sound!
I have got a Peavey 6505 (equal to 5150) now, and what kind of setting should i use to get a tone almost equal to this?.
i also have a Peavey EVH Wolfgang, with EVH`s choice of pickups. so the guitar will sound perfect with the right amp setting.
