  • The Police song without Andy & Stewart.

  • Old time sake!

  • This should have at least 1,000,000+ views by now. Great modern R&B song.

  • have heard this track so many times over the last 20 odd years an must say im impressed with the drumming every time.

  • This was #1 on the day I was born : ]

  • Great song, the video doesn't do it justice. :(

  • bitchin bass lines

  • "Father, if Jesus exists how come 'He" never lives here."

Well-stung Sting. Jesus' possible reply: Because Earth is Hell, just have faith in me, and I am most likely an elaborate creation of the Roman Imperial Govt - with Josephus' help.

  • 多少陰鬱で地味な印象の"ソウル・ケイジ"だったが、シンプルで赤裸々なスティングでした、そしてなんといっても、このナイス・チューン"All This Time"

  • fuck ya VEVO!

  • This song reminds me of being like 5 yearls old and dancing in the living with my sis while this played on VH1. Good memories, good song!

  • This song means so much to me. Sting forever.

  • "Father is Jesus exist and how come He never lived here?"

  • @sunwoh Wrong. -- Father, if Jesus exists, then how come he never lived here? Look it up. The internet has everything....

  • @sunwoh

    Jayzuz!

Once a catholic, always a catholic.

  • i think we can all agree on one thing.... FUCK VEVO!!! you can suck my nuts faster than you can load... light my bleezy and sit back i guess

  • i like this song

  • He sang this on the "Today Show" this monring. He's still got it!

  • Very well done y old man

  • What I like about this song is how sounds like like this happy, rolling song...and then you listen to the lyrics.

As of 10/7/2011, nineteen people wnat to bury this at sea.

  • YOU FUCK UP! KILL THE OLD MAN AT SEA +JVA+

  • video seems out of character for the song. song has always struck me as dark and grief-stricken.

  • If Sting was a Painter he would be like Van Goh, Scientist he would be Einstein , if a Singer he would be Sting , nobody can come close to him !!!!!!!

  • 25 years later & I still want to jump his bones... ;P

  • Loved this one from the first listen.

The video - is it a play on the Marx Brothers famous cabin scene?

  • I love this song. The lyrics are haunting and beautiful. This video does not do it justice.

  • Is one of those priests played by actor Clive Owen? Sure looks like him.

  • Get yourself in the boat already, how many times do you need to be asked?

  • Allá por el muy lejano 1991 cuando empezaba a estudiar bajo me topé con esta canción con una linea de bajo genial minimalista en su esencia; por eso la aprendí rapido y desde siempre la adoré y toda la musica de Sting la adoro...

  • One more thing...whoever dissliked this...I mean I can understand people like and...disslike diffrent things...but how...who could disslike this song????

  • Yup one of the best songs of all the times...so oh so catchy...loves it!

  • sting è uno stronzo.

  • Sting's a terrific songwriter. And I love Padgham's production...

  • It is a good laugh....odd, given the rather serious subject of the song and indeed, the entire album.

  • I've got this song on my "Very Best Of Sting And The Police" CD that I made. Seriously, why isn't this song considered one of the best he's ever made? The lyrics in this song may portray a dark burial at sea, but I like it! I consider it to be one of his best songs...ever!!

  • Neg all videos with ads.

  • my father, Ralph Calabrese,jr died in 1991 & my brother & I were excluded from the wake, funeral etc by his 2nd wife due to the will. So I love Sting's interpretation of the ceremony of burial at sea. I would love to talk to Sting about it

  • @julietspaghetti wouldn't speaking with a counselor be better??

  • @julietspaghetti Fuck, I am sorry to hear about the details surrounding your father's passing. At the the time this song was released I had not heard from my father for many years. This song brings back melancholy memories that tho painful, I hold on to them...

  • @julietspaghetti That sounds unusually cruel and unjust, I hope you will have it resolved positively. I wish you good luck in contacting Sting.

  • @julietspaghetti

    My boy, my boy...

I am so sorry that your dear father was buried in anger. This is so much Sting's (aka Gordon Sumner) last blast as an Angry Young Man, now twenty years agone.

How time flies, but certain scars never quite heal.

  • @pinz2022 I would say its about acceptance that the great cycle of life/death just keeps rolling on, like the river he refers to

  • I love this video so much!

    Sting is a genious!

  • I like the Shakespearean 'poor player' on the stage when Sting sings about the Roman Empire.

  • this is how he acted with the police its good to see he didint lose it when they broke up

  • great song !!! :))

  • Heard him say in an interview that he had quite a writers block for a while after his father died. In this song the "old man" is his father. Thinking about the whole experience of losing your dad and then remembering what he said and thought during his life. I guess it made him want to write again.I like the way he took the whole thing about the death and burial of a loved one and made it more an up than a down. I'm sure it was good for his soul to get it out.

  • Wow...remember when Sting was cool.

  • @ScrapMetalBomb he is still cool !!!!

  • He's cute.

  • This song remembers me being not a NOT fanatic Police-fan....but entering my new job in 1991, at last Sting at end using his classic chords to give me back strenght again to go in 1991 to my endless new job and yes it is 2011!

  • I'm so glad that my father showed me Sting! His music means so much to me! I have heard him all my life :D Since i was a toddler, and i'm 18 years now! STING YOU REALLY THE BEST!

  • exelent song !

  • I love you Sting~~~ I Always have & Always will!!!! I LOVE YOU MORE THAN ANYONE!!!!!!!! CJ

  • Keanu?

  • I love this song. Picks me up when im feeling crap

  • "Blessed are the poor,

for they shall inherit the earth,

Better to be poor, then be a fat man

in the eye of the needle.

As these words were spoken, I swear

I hear the old man laughing

What good is a used up world

...and how can it be worth having?"

...because the old man is jealous, not long for this world. A spoiled child...he lays ruin to that he once held dear...proclaiming himself 'victor', he exits stage left. Bravo, the fool, BRAVISSIMO! Life goes on without him! Thank God. :)

  • haha :D

some vidios of stnig makes me lagg veary hard. this is one of them. and 'love is the seventh wave' to.

not becouse i make fun of sting, no i love him and recpect him veary mutch, but becouse i love the humor in it.

this song (and 'love is the seventh wave' to) is about hope and that love stays in the world for ever, but sting makes humor out of it on a why that he not makes fun of his one song and the massage whats in it.

sting is verry creative and smart <3

  • Hurrah for Marx Bros. references. [If anyone else gets this, reply or thumbs up? I need more Marx Brothers fans ;A;]

  • father if jesus excist then howcome he never lived here.....like this line

  • father if jesus excist then howcome he never live here.....like this line

  • Try to do id better and i buy u a pirkka-beer.

  • the best ...... youre welcome to try to to it better......

  • He's got a sort of Irish or Scottish flare to the Vibe of this tune!!Great thing to do that indeed!!!

  • Always find this song refreshing, like a flowing river!

    Amazing.

  • I remember when this was a new song. It feels so recent. 20 years went by so fast.

  • 4:33 Phil Collins:)

  • The Soul Cages, to me, is his best album ever, every song on it was just perfection

  • @matilda1978 oh sweetheart I agree with you so much. Such a masterpiece, awash with the symbology of water and regret and post-partum reminiscence. I adore this album, even if it makes me cry. And my daughters name is Matilda. lol. Seriously.

  • The song is like B'Witched's "Jesse Hold On" song.

  • Does Sting sing a song where he and a woman are riding horses through some fields? Mu mom wanted to know. If you know plz message me that name of it. Thanks. (:

  • Father, if Jesus exists,

Then how come he never lived here *best lyric from the song!

  • Killer drummin'... Like those ringing guitars in the chorous, too.

  • This is my all time favorite Sting song. I wish he would go back to creating music like this...

  • plug your CPU in your big screen and watch this up close-- will make you dizzy - LOL. If it doesn't, try it with a little Cap'n and Coke :O

  • what's it mean! Save Humanity!...But To Give Greatness To An Adversary! How Great. Is Our God!...our buddy..but WHO should get The Nuclear Weapon!..(Fox.Rock's Czar!)....but I Think that A Greater Civalization could Overthrow us as The Humanity!..OMNIPRESENCE!

  • Saw this tour - Soul Cages in '91. Good tour.

  • who play drums in this song?

  • @MrDrum31, this is Manu Katche' on drums. Manu recorded the whole Soul Cages album with Sting. Manu didn't want to do the tour, though, so Vinnie took over on drums. (I love Vinnie, but it's a totally different vibe and feel.) The Soul Cages disc is filled with great drumming by Manu. Listen to Wild Wild Sea, for instance, and you can hear a drummer use hist sticks to brilliantly "paint" a storm at sea....

  • @MrDrum31 : Manu Katché

  • Always loved the track, biut this is the time I have seen the vid. Far from stupid, it oozes allegory from every porthole... as it were.

  • Great song but the video is stupid. He rarely made good videos after 1991

  • Very good song!

  • YOU GOTTA ADMITTE STING PUT OUT SDOME REALLY GREAT MUSIS AFTER THE POLICE & THIS SONG PROVES IT............HE'S STILL RELEVANT.....BELIEVE IT

  • happy speed,realistic words

  • ...been reading/enjoying the comments. Though I'm a deist, and somewhat uncomfortable with disparaging religion, the lyrics are brilliant, the imagery evocative, the tune superb....and I recognize the bitterness of him losing his Dad. Pairing the song with a send-up of the Marx Brothers stateroom scene is a classic twist that only heightens the irony! LOVE IT!

  • sting at his best

  • No wonder he escaped throughout the window. Rather take the chanses out at sea than in that jungle.

  • I agree! I have always loved the way they keep the line in this song, and the snare double-shot, love it!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @ianschecter Agreed. I think these are Sting's best lyrics. The futility and silliness of religion juxtaposed against the imagery of nature (the horses, the river, the geese, the crows, the stones ... all timeless). Some of my all-time favourite lines ... "One to learn, one to teach Which was the cold wind blows"

"What good is a used up world, and how could it be worth having"

"Men go crazy in congregations, they only get better one by one."

  • if you read the lyrics to this song they are as brilliant as anything any poet has ever written. love the music also....just a work of art.

  • 1991

  • Listen carefully to the drums on this song, don't you think they're great? It was done by Manu Katche or Kache. I like how he hits twice on the snare to get the beat down correct.

  • Con tutto il tempo..... è necessario ..... è insostituibile il tempo.... c'è tempo per ogni cosa....anche quello di ascoltare STING ....... beautiful GORDON

  • Sting looks like Conan O'Brien lol

  • @jason25k

    can't see any resemblance really.

  • i cannot express how the visuals of this video detract from the reality from which I gain pleasure from this song. My God.... the lyrics mean so much more than what is portrayed here. Perhaps it is tongue in cheek but goddamn, I won't believe for a nanosecond that Sting approved of this video as the epitome the song as a whole. He professed this particular song as an adage toward his father.... 80's crap imagery does not reflect this video's effect on my love of Sting

  • Saw the sad, shy horses walking home, in the sodium light. Oh, damn it that this is a cliche, but I mean it for real: that is briliant... and I say suggestive of genius. Lyric poetry must always be less about making a "point," more about the way words, the simple sounds-of words, strike us, musically, melodically, and hang out together: poetry's not about a point (though Sting clearly has one incidentally in mind here: organized, abstracted, impersonal religion is silly. We get better 1 by 1!

  • @falstaffswims funny thing about poetry. the best stuff disciplines the words into pictures, points or emotions sure, but the key is the control of these emotions, rather than spilling them all over the place. I think Sting does this well.

  • @falstaffswims

I know, the sodium line is brilliant. I've been thinking of it recently as the days draw in. I think the best line in the song is "Fussing and flapping in priestly black like a murder of crows." Just amazing how much he crams into this line. The priests robes flapping like wings as they fuss over his dad, and a group of crows is relly called a murder

  • takes me back :)

  • Oh, the days when many videoclips were funny! And when those artists that sold millions were good!

  • I grew up on sting.... My dad loves him...

  • whats with the cakewalk??

    Great music =)

  • Wait a minute, that's Trudie Styler, Sting's wife, in the french maid costume! Funny! And I think he made up a new expression with "sodium light", but I know what kind of light he means. Also, Sting is right, men (people) do tend to go crazy at church, but they really only become better people on their own, in their own time, and way.

  • i grew up listeing to sing and the police and after that when sting went solo such good music i thank my parents for having good taste in music

  • Brings back memories when I first heard it. Awasome song, and though its mixed w/ humor, the lyrics states exactly about us, our civilizations...our foolishness.

  • handsome sting...

  • beautiful video--tell BP OIL!

  • in this video sting looks like chris martin! this is one of my favourite songs ;D

  • I loved this song as a kid and love it even more as an adult.

  • @Itzpower right on, i remember listening to this at the swimming pool when i was a kid. i havent really heard it since but i appreciate alot more.

  • @Itzpower love it as kid and love it more as adult.. wait im only 14 years old, im not an adult jet XD

  • @Itzpower Same here. Funny how you just remember the song even if you havent heard it for a long time, like me. Same with other Sting song, Wrapped Around Your Finger.:)

  • That's one of the greatest solo singles by Sting. The song made it the # 1 in Canada and was his fourth the Top 10 in USA, made it the # 5 in the summer of 1991.

Thank you VEVO for posting in H.Q

  • I went to Scotland a couple summers ago and there is no better feeling than driving through a countryside of rolling hills and lochs and listening to this song :) I feel like I'm there again whenever I hear this...such a great song.

  • This video is a reworking of the cabin scene from the Marx Brothers' movie 'Night At The Opera'

  • 4:21

lol u think it's his size?

  • Floating and flowing...Exellent simultaning of life it self...

  • If I had it to do over, I'd have the Pet Shop Boys play the priests.

Bit of a Jack Black sort of stare at the end, innit?

    : )

  • This such a funny video.

  • One of my favourate Sting Videos.

He always injects Humour in his up-tempo music videos.

    GOD BLESS HIM FOR THAT.

THERE'S ENOUGH DOOM AND GLOOM IN THE WORLD AS IT IS.

  • @rogerhoward555 love the riff the drummer does about midway through

  • @rogerhoward555 now that you mention it,,,,the lyrics to this song are really dark and depressing

  • @rogerhoward555 Yes, God Bless him, but his not grabbing the life ring isn't humorous at all! :-O

  • love, love, love the song and the music vid as well!!!

lots of funny characters (watch out for melanie griffith making his nails!) and a very handsome sting.

  • a music video

  • You say it like its a bad thing! ;)
