  • Thank you for this video. I put those books on my list. You rock! :) kerrysmiles

  • kind words, thank you. i'm happy it was useful.

  • thank you !!!! i will try and stop but it is like I reach out to people but no one ever takes my hand and I end up even worse then I was before because all of me hope is ripped away and I am even more alone

  • Great video, thank you. I guess those two books are available in a lot of libraries (or maybe people can email in a 'book purhase suggestion' to their library, I do that all the time!). I wish I knew much more about self-harm when I was younger. A couple of friends of mine self-harmed & I had no idea why or how to respond. Self-harming/cutting is so common. I remember having sex ed classes at school when I was 11-13, but unfortunately I never had any classes on sex abuse/abuse/self-harm.

  • [We did have drug addiction education though]. I am 22. My 6 year old sister had had 'my body is my own' type classes (sex abuse awareness) at her play centre when she was 4 years old. I think every kid should have something like that.

  • I agree, it is an addiction. But you've helped me to be in a more positive mindset about this whole thing, and for that I thank you :) I'm glad you're on the road to recovery. And I agree, labels are crap. I really love your ideas, I'm going to try the butterly thing!

    God bless,

    Amanda

  • Thank you for posting this. i know it was a year ago, but i watched it today.

I really love how strong you are in talking about this shit that most people dont want to hear about. You actually helped me alot.

    thank you again

  • Thank you for making this. I started self-harm [by cutting my arm] when I was 10. And I am sad to say, I still do this. My friends have recommended the rubber-band snapping method, but it hasn't exactly worked. Whenever I'm sad [even a little] I cut. It's like a natural reaction, like when you get food poisoning you throw-up. I really need to get out of it, I know, but it's so insanely hard.

  • that's so awesome. thanks for subscribing. we will add more videos as time goes on. i appreciate the feedback and want to reiterate that you are not alone and that there are ways to stop. it's hard! but it can happen. thanks for being here.

  • thank you for your comment!

  • great video; thank you

  • Do you think its weird when people cut for absolutely no reason. like they never got abused, harassed, raped.. or anything?

    You just do it..

cuz when i cut myself i feel like a total freak and like im just idk.. i feel like i have no reason to cut...

do you know any reasons why i might that i dont realize?

i just dont get it.. and need help!

    thanks

  • self-harming isn't always black and white. there is also a chemical change in the brain that happens after prolonged practice. i believe that self-harming is an addiction and needs to be looked at from that standpoint. i tell anyone who is harming themselves, no matter the reason to seek out a good therapist and start talking. if you aren't sure the reasons right away, while getting honest in therapy i think you will soon realize what's making you do such things.

  • im 13 i cut i dont no how to stop i always have thoughts on suicide please give me some advice

  • you need to talk to someone. you are not alone, even though it feels that way sometimes. i hope that you will find a counselor who you can talk to, if you don't have someone safe in your immediate circle. please talk to someone: 1-800-SUICIDE - it can help just to talk and be heard. you're not alone!

  • hae wow i just watched your video, your such a good role modle for us who self harm.

thank you for what you said....... xoxoxo

  • aww, thanks! that's such a nice thing to say. the hope is that by hearing myself and others talk about it, more people will know that they are not alone! keep the faith and remember you are worth fighting for. no more self-harm!

  • Im a 13 year old who self harms. only yesterday was i up in my bedroom cryin my eyes out thinking of how i could commit suicide...i have 73 cuts up my arms and legs. i normally take 20 minutes in the bath. i always wear long sleeves and neither my parents or relatives know...please help me before its too late...x

  • i sent you an email but i'm not sure you got it.

  • As above: you need to talk to someone. you are not alone, even though it feels that way sometimes. i hope that you will find a counselor who you can talk to, if you don't have someone safe in your immediate circle. please talk to someone: 1-800-SUICIDE - it can help just to talk and be heard. you're not alone!

  • This is such an amazing youtube account + video...I really appreciate that your doing this because I've been through alot of the things you talk about also and I can definately relate...ppl don't usually talk about it and its hard..it makes me feel like its unacceptable to even mention it..but I'm so glad you two are :) kudos:)

  • thank you for that. Thank you also for coming back and not hurting yourself but instead sharing in the experience with me. It's hard, no doubt. One day at a time. You can do it. We all can. Kudos for remembering to breath.

  • I often come to this video when I'm feeling low, as I am today. It helps so much to hear a positive voice instead of drowning in the constant negative thoughts. I've been journaling a lot lately, multiple times a day and its helping. I'm also in therapy. Just trying to turn things around. I'm 33 days SI free and wanted to thank you for the positive message.

  • it's never too late to comment! thanks for sharing your experience. i'm happy to hear that you are using more positive methods to get out the rage and the hurt. we deserve better for ourselves. good on you for taking the steps to healing yourself.

  • This comment is a bit late, but thanks for posting this. I self injured for a long time. My mother found out when I was 15 and I think I broke her heart. I couldn't bear the thought of hurting her, so I stopped.I made my mother cry and it makes me shrivel in shame. Now I have a journal full of very angry thoughts but at least they're out of me.

  • I could listen to you talk for hours. Thank you so much, ive been trying to stop for a while but im determined now!

  • Thank you for that sweet and wonderful comment.

You(we!) deserve to live a life free from harm.

  • Man...what an excellent vid!

  • Thanks so much for posting this (and your other videos). I have read some of the books you have recommended in your videos and they really help! I used to feel so alone in all of this. While recovering from > 20yrs of anorexia I had massive urges to harm myself in other ways and felt so helpless re-living bad memories. It does gradually get easier if you stick at it - i.e. being kind to yourself. Also, the low moods do eventually lift on their own.

  • thank you - feel free to post your suggestions here also as we are learning that a lot of people are looking to this page for additional info. namaste.

  • Great video. Thanks :)

  • i'm really grateful for people like you. and i think what you're doing is reaaally important. :)

  • great video

  • You remind me of Denise from the Cosby show lol

Could you recommend a book for understanding self harm? I have a bunch of friends who do this and want to understand what they are feeling

  • i would recommend the two highlighted in the video, as they are really helpful. also, try resources listed on WRITING LOVE ON HER ARMS. they are online and on my space. do a search. they rock. thanks for commenting.

  • Thanks a bunch!

  • thank you.
