Ah, Mike Post. I had gotten interested in him because of the Rockford Files theme. And then this song came out as the them for the Greatest American Hero. Post even had an album out with this song and some other TV theme songs he had composed. Good stuff.
Great memories! 'The Greatest American Hero' theme is a classic, still sounds great. And Marilyn McCoo is such a classy, talented lady. Thanks for posting.
@lbCharmed1 Yes I know its not Matt Berry, as I can read the title of the video, I was making what I call a 'joke' (Joey and Matt look very similar) :D
@teaforbastards I know that, but I had no clue who Matt Berry was when I read your comment. I googled him and saw, yes, there is a similarity between the two men. I just thought it was funny that Matt is SEVERELY younger than Mr. Scarbury. I guess my attempt at 'humor' was lost in the plain old black and white of writing . . .
Joey Scarbury had a hot 100 hit 10 years before Believe it or Not, called Mixed-Up Guy. Nccvball has a snippet of it on their hits of 1971 video on their Youtube page. No Reply at All got to #29 in Billboard, and The Old Songs reached #15. Here I Am reached #5
next to American Bandstand, Soul Train this was another great Music show, We got to see the actual Stars performed with out buying a concert ticket. The 80;s was the best fun decade, nothing like this exist anymore. and most of the performance of today suck. MTV is no longer the MTV as we knew it. MTV really stupid and screwed, Too many reality shows, and soap opera, movies. It is not like Music 24 hours a day. Miss the 80's
i remember this show from the seventies and early to mid eighties sadly MTV came and destroyed this show and then MTV destroyed themselves what a shame
Actually, Solid Gold was only on in the 80's. The very 1st 2-hour special SOLID GOLD '79 aired in February of 1980. Then returned as a weekly series in Sept. 1980 and ran through July, 1988.
I remember it because Sheena Easton was on every week. I also remember the wonderful Andy Gibb. I was so sad when he died. Now Mo's gone, there's only Barry and Robin. I swaer Greatest American Hero is one of my most favorite shows of all time, Robert Culp was brilliant and William Katt, well what can anyone say. He was GOLD. Too many memories.
The girl who used to babysit me on Sat. nights always made us watch Solid Gold. At the time I only liked it when KISS came on and did "A World Without Heroes." My babysitter said "pay attention and you might see a nekkid girl" when the dancers were on!
One question, is it just me that noticed that when they recap the weeks top ten songs number six is "Private eyes" by Hall and Oates, but in fact when you look at the number six previously it's Journey. And in fact Hall and Oates are even not in that week. How bad can it get :)
I saw it and just didn't get it to add up, there was no Hall and Oates song before the recap!
The song is an instrumental version of the "SOLID GOLD" theme. Changed from season to season in arrangement and tempo to match the sung version at the end of every show. Hope that helps!
If you're referring to the shirts they're wearing in the "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" number, I believe those are supposed to look like Caribbean inspired costumes because the music as that "flavor" and Darcel also limbos under the stick.
joey scarbury IS singing LIVE....he's not like these other talentless artists nowadays that can't hold a note live....if you wanna watch some lip syncing, watch a live performance of Milli Vanilli.
i never said he was talentless, its a great song, but he is lip syncing, id like someone else to respond with their opinion so if anyone else is reading this, feel free to chime in and prove music dude wronggggggggggg
yeah he isn't lip syncing you can tell as an Artist myself you have good shows then you have bad ones...this is a good one but he is different then the CD version as people call it, he isn't lip syncing you can hear the breaths and the little vibrato that is due to being a lil nervous
This is my 3rd attempt to respond, don't know why it isn't taking. I have compared this performance to the "commercially released" version and IF he isn't lip syncing, then they recorded a SG version of this song for him to lip sync. You can hear his vocal straining very clearly and the "This is to good to be true" is the dead give away - it sounds nothing like the album version, His voice doesn't sound tracked in that part for this performance. My 2 cents..
There's another part near the end of the song where that's evident, too. It comes at the end of the bridge where there's that guitar riff, a key change (from D major to E major), and Joey sings the chorus repeating to fade.
I thought it was rather RUDE to see Andy and Maralyn come up during the middle of the song.. They should have kept them off camera until Joey was done...
Miss this show so much. Those solid gold dancers had the ability to make me enjoy a song and go out and buy the single even after I didn't like it initially or when played on the radio. I thought Marilyn was the actual host not co-host!
Do you have that performance of Andy singing Bob Seager's But i could't remember the title and the dancing routines led by Debra. Can you air that one too. Debra is my favorite...I think it is in the same episode.
Just one minor thing I noticed: on the recap, I think they flip-flopped "Don't Stop Believin'" and "Private Eyes." The Journey hit was listed at #6 during the countdown routines; it was #7 in the recap.

@teaforbastards If you are referring to the person singing "Believe It Or Not", NO. Matt would've been about 10 years old at the time this aired.

I've never seen the show but did they usually just walk out in front of the artist in the middle of a song?

Yes, that was the format of the show, typically during the instrumental part of the song is when they did the introductions.

exactly and these immature punks on here who are effing and blinding over it are pathetic.
anway, also, i think this is the height of andy gibb's drug abuse and i wondered at this time if the dancers themselves were huge celebrities.
bcrocker33 2 years ago
This is my 3rd attempt to respond, don't know why it isn't taking. I have compared this performance to the "commercially released" version and IF he isn't lip syncing, then they recorded a SG version of this song for him to lip sync. My 2 cents..
lbCharmed1 3 years ago
Plus you can hear his voice echo within the sound stage in the very beginning which I have NEVER heard on other SG performances that were lip synced.
lbCharmed1 3 years ago
Dang! I meant to say "IF he IS (not isn't) lip syncing, then they recorded a SG verson of this song for him to lip sync."
That's what I get for staying up way to late trying to respond to these things!
lbCharmed1 3 years ago
What they did a lot was that the song would be played in the background and the singer could sign with it so there could be slight variations.
syouyun 3 years ago
yeah like a karaoke version of it lol lame yet satisfying to the public lol
surdartsid 3 years ago
There's another part near the end of the song where that's evident, too. It comes at the end of the bridge where there's that guitar riff, a key change (from D major to E major), and Joey sings the chorus repeating to fade.

nice how they break it down at 2:20
ukendcx2000 3 years ago
OK....not quite sure what you mean, but if you mean the focus on the dancers and their dancing, I agree.
lbCharmed1 3 years ago
oh I'm sorry, by "break it down" I mean how he goes into the chorus or the next part of the song. the "bridge".
ukendcx2000 3 years ago
OK then. Shows how much I know! Thanks for taking the time to clear that up for me!
lbCharmed1 3 years ago
