hey that was my cafe, love the doco, anthony quinn was a late thought for narrator, but perfect for the theme. anyone that remembers 'tsakpina' will remember all the good times we had. unfortunately on the night they filmed thimios stathoulopoulos performing at tsakpina my girlfriend andrea demetriou came back from sydney and told me she was having an affair with the painter george mihelakos. i got very drunk and don't remember much else.
I watched this beautifull doc in the middle of my emigration van Holland to Greece and it helped me to see that my emigration was a right choice. I love the rembetiko !!! Thanks for sharing this doc.
just adding my thanks to everyone elses. should have been packing this last hour or so as i'm returning to greece after 20 years away tomorrow, but this was ore imprortant - 'm ready to go back now ♥
in the olympic games of Athens(2004)i was a volunteer.somebody ask me:what means for you to be Greek.the answer is that video.these are Greek people.Greece is music,Greece is the real life.
its very difficult to explain the meaning of that song in english, because they are not words like "sekleti" in english and cant undrestand what realy meens
I cried at the end. You know....cultures are created slowly...over hundreds and thousands of years....and they can so easily...and quickly...be extinguished.
Now THAT was a great documentary from the BBC. Yes, it might be old for a doc now (can someone check the year on the last set of closing titles?), but the music lives on. I'm not Greek, but I do like rempetika, and this pretty much sums it all up for me.

Those Melbourne performers were Yiota and Thimios Stathilopoulos. Thimios was the first to play Rebetika in Melbourne in the late 60's (I believe). I have had the privilege of performing with her and her Daughter Maria. Thanks for posting.
It is a crying shame that all these traditional styles of Greek music are being overwhelmed by the insipid spread of braindead techno/club/trance bullshit. We need to put a stop to this.
A documentary about rebetika without mentioning Misirlou? 0_o

BTW, that song played when the closing titles are played - what's its name? The English translation?
Dan1988A 4 years ago
the title is "I Foni To Argile" (the sound of the waterpipe) the first part of the translation:
Five years locked up inside Jedi Kule, x 2
Because of all my troubles I picked up the arghile. x 2
Blow, suck, pull it,
Fill it and light it up,
Watch out for the cops,
Those prison guards!
jureilers 4 years ago 2
the second part:
- Take yours too, Vangelis!
- To our health!
And another five years you've forgotten, good, x 2
For comfort the manges gave me the arghile. x 2
Blow, suck, pull it,
Fill it and light it up,
Watch out for the cops,
Those prison guards!
jureilers 4 years ago
the end:
Now that I've got out from inside Jedi Kule, x 2
Fill my arghile so I can smoke, my dear. x 2
Blow, suck, pull it,
Fill it and light it up,
Watch out for the cops,
Those prison guards!
