hey that was my cafe, love the doco, anthony quinn was a late thought for narrator, but perfect for the theme. anyone that remembers 'tsakpina' will remember all the good times we had. unfortunately on the night they filmed thimios stathoulopoulos performing at tsakpina my girlfriend andrea demetriou came back from sydney and told me she was having an affair with the painter george mihelakos. i got very drunk and don't remember much else.

BTW, that song played when the closing titles are played - what's its name? The English translation?

Now THAT was a great documentary from the BBC. Yes, it might be old for a doc now (can someone check the year on the last set of closing titles?), but the music lives on. I'm not Greek, but I do like rempetika, and this pretty much sums it all up for me.

Those Melbourne performers were Yiota and Thimios Stathilopoulos. Thimios was the first to play Rebetika in Melbourne in the late 60's (I believe). I have had the privilege of performing with her and her Daughter Maria. Thanks for posting.
