People often end up with wild rodents they've reared, that can't be released into the wild. If the animal is far from endangered, and often considered a pest, the powers that be don't mind if they end up as pets, so long as they're properly cared for. I have four mice and two voles, courtesy my cats. My oldest vole turned three (years) early last month. Three months in the wild would be it.

@gmonday Most of the time it's when a baby falls out of a tree or is otherwise abandoned by it's mother for some reason. The two my family has had came from friends who found them and knew that we kept many pets at our house. And asked if we'd take care of them. The first squirrel we had we named Nellie, after the guy who found him. The next was Theodore. They can make good pets but they are still wild animals and should not be taken unless they have no other chance at survival.

@knpatin Pretty much just things like Bananas and Apples (they have to be cut up though) grapes and vegies are good too, when your little squirrel grows up, you should start feeding it Hamster/Gerbil food.

@knpatin Tiny berries (cranberries etc), chopped up nuts, chopped up apples, grapes, carrots are okay too. Just anything they would eat in the wild.

Make sure you keep it warm and insulated, give it room or it will die of shock. dont touch it too much.

I helped rescue a baby squirrel. I would have loved to take him/her home, but... At least I bought a few days supply of unsalted peanuts, and gave them to the man who was resourceful enough to find a box, to carry it in.

I do think it's possible that it might cause some discomfort to the squirrel. Though I'm no expert, it doesn't sound to me like a very happy sound. Still, it's obvious that you love and take good care of your squirrel.

@deutschesmaedchen Having helped rehabilitate baby squirrels, if they don't want to be held or aren't happy about their position, they are next to impossible to hold still (even if it means it makes it a lot harder to feed them, which is what they do want.. *lol*). There's a reason why the term "squirrely" means what it does. :)

I hope little chip is still part of your family. Years ago the neighbor kids got a hold of a naked baby squirrel:( So it spent the night with me, the next day I drove out to the Nature Center. All for wildlife, amazing place! I would have love to hand raise him or her, but I was too busy between my newborn and college at the time. Besides I know he or she had a much better chance of survival with them.

I completely agree with the poster beneath me. It is quite PAINFUL for you to stick your finger in a squirrel's ear. You are grinding your finger horrifyingly close to his eardrum. Those little hairs lining his ear are there to warn him when foreign objects are getting to close to his eardrum. Those hairs also transmit vibration to his eardrums. When you're worming your finger in there, it creates unbearably loud vibrations. You might not believe it, but your squirrel is in pain. Stop.
