First time I saw this plane was in about '89, at an air show on the Med coast. It just flew low and slowly along the beach, ugly and awkward. I say "Yeah, but so what? A fuckin' glider can do that. Where's the big deal?"

Then, it suddenly rears up on its ass end in 2 seconds, goes almost vertical, makes the most awesomely menacing sound I ever heard, and almost disappears before I can even blink.

I say "Ah. Okay. Fair enough. Got it."

I hope they keep the A10 around. I heard the military was phasing them out. Dunno why though. Maybe not enough tanks? Maybe this Libya/Syria thing will encourage the brass to keep them around. My guess though is that they'll probably end up being sold to Isreal. It'd be awesome to see what Canada could do with them if they don't have some tight ass in the brass saying "We currently at this time do not see a need for blah blah blah".

@berner The military was not phasing it out, the Air Force was phasing it out. Both Army and Marines want this aircraft but Air Force will not transfer it to them. This Aircraft has been mothballed 3 times and currently only in the Air Force Reserve. Sad that this plane is a PERFECT ground support aircraft and the Air Force wants it gone.... UGH

The designer of the original Ju-87 Stukka dive bomber was originally in charge of the development of the A-10 thunderbolt. After WWII he came over to the US and led the aeronautical development team as it radically changed the design of his original Ju-87. The result is the worlds most deadly tank killing, light armor destroying, bunker busting, infantry chewing, pesky helicopter swatter and overall badass....my favorite.........the Warthog. @FoxvoxDK It is true that the recoil does actually slow the aircraft down a bit. I don't know about the stall, but the pilots only fire in short controlled bursts of a few seconds, so I don't think it would happen. It may be able to happen if they fired continously, but I don't know for sure.

F-16 sucks ass. F-15C and F-18 Super Hornet are much better. And this is only a ground attack plane. Also, they get shot down by .50 cal machine guns. It's projected that highly mobile anti-air systems like Tunguska can kill any reasonable number of A-10s without being hit.

They dont get shot down by .50cal its armour can withstand up to 23mm rounds and even if it loses alot of its control surfaces it can still fly perfectly.

A-10 is good but not as good as Russian Su-25...... A-10 fully loaded can bearly do 447 kts....while Su-25 fully loaded can go beyond Mach 1 and still more manuverable than A-10.....However, A-10 is still in its own right a decent machine...but if send unguarded by fighter escorts.....it is doomed in enemy skies...cuz it cant outrun the enemy fighters..

Don't make me laugh. Su-25 top speed is mach 0.8 so NOT supersonic, it can carry just over half the armament of the A-10 and it has less protection (engines close together, larger IR signature). Yes it's faster than the A-10 but that also means its turns are wider - NOT a good thing close to the ground. The Su-25 is designed to stay high up, the A-10 goes low. Plus, the Su-25 is russian: good design but horrible maintenance so it falls out of the sky spontaneously :-)
