I have better ways:

Turning off the backlight is way to dark to see and is unpractical. Instead have it turn off after 5 or even 2 seconds.

Adjust the brightness to the lowest setting. Even at its lowest, it's stil easy to see.

They say not to skip songs a lot but if you have to, put the player on pause first. Otherwise it'll keep trying to play each song you pass. You can actually hear the ipod work less if you pause it first.

if you are using an iPod Touch (or anything with adjustable backlight brightness) then just turn the brightness down. Having it on full REALLY drains the battery on an iPhone, but its amazing how much more time you get with the slider on half.

And to be honest, I don't think the equaliser has much impact on the battery
