This really doesn't seem to bad, just difficult to breath.. But if even highly trained soliders in the miltary can't handle dripping water, very much doubt I could
This was really difficult for me to watch and actually brought me to tears.
Hitchens was a brilliant man. Taking part in and documenting this experiment just further demonstrates his intellectual curiosity and strength of character. The world is indeed duller without you CH
Hey everybody, please please sign this online petition for a Hitchens monument, it has 9000 signatures already but judging by the view counts on his videos it is nowhere close to representative to public feeling. Also the thumbs up to highlight this would be greatly appreciated. :) .atheist-reference. org/ x
Waterboarding still seems like a really tame "torture" to me-- it's pretty startling that Hitchens cried uncle after only 16 seconds, given that he knew what would happen, and that those administering the demonstration presumably wouldn't let him drown. Couldn't he have simply held his breathe?
Guess one needs to experience it themselves, to understand the sensation--
There are people that have almost drowned and now have a paralyzing fear of water. It is psychological, but that kind of abuse has long lasting effects on people. The reason we should not use "every available tool at our disposal"...it makes us no better than the terrorists. I thought that was the reason we went to war, to stop these kind of attrocities. Our leaders make our country look like a bunch of hippocrites by being in favor of these tactics. It sickens me to depths of my soul.
@kellysparky1 i dont like people like you if you are going to complain do go on the internet and start bitching. spread awerness or right a letter or something.thats life.get over it
@halifaxx55 Because we wanted to see how bad it was and i had a secret they wanted to know, and based on why you should know it was me they tested it on. it was a bitch
What scares me so much is the efficiency that the torturers have. It is practiced and precise and they know exactly what they're doing. Yes, this is a demonstration, but for the love of god this happens to real people all the time.
What are they pooring on his face? It looks like water yet I don't see how water would hurt you as badly as a other tortue methods, or even stuff I could think of like slowly ripping off fingernails and twisting fingers and toes off 1 by one and other stuff like that...
@N0thinglasts1 this is just water. That's kind of the point of this video you know...did you listen ? it simulates the feeling of drowning. It is not obvious torture, that's why many people claim it isn't, yet he can't stand it more than 20 seconds
@N0thinglasts1 its psychological, it simulates the effects of drowning. your not actually drowning but your mind tell you that you are. its not psychical torture like what you were saying (ripping off fingers and what not) but the effects take anyone who isnt specially training in handling being waterboarded in to a complete panic
I have been bitterly opposed to this 'war on terrorism' from virtually the start. (Not that I deny muslim radicals exist, just the way this 'war' was handled was ridiculous.) And even more bitterly to Iraq (which wasn't even a LEGAL war! (Nor was there any justification for it.)
And since I consider that sort of stuff/politics MUCH more important then my atheism, that was definetly a bit of a dealbreaker with Hitchens for me. (that and his occassional misogyny.)
I guess with Hitchens, I do actually respect him. And that's quite rare for me with people I think took a stand for inexcusable things (like Iraq (or voting for Dubya's fascists)
But I think it was stuff like this, where he actually DID get waterboarded and admitted it was torture that makes me able to forgive Hitchens. Because I believed he was truly sincere, and that does matter to me.
I mean I know there's some people out there who think Hitchens could do no wrong and was always right about everything, but I have no respect whatsoever for people who think like that. To me their just another flavour of dittohead. No thoughts of their own.
But Hitchens, he did manage to get my respect in spite of some severe differences. And he was always entertaining to watch. It's regrettable he died so young.
@TheSkunkCat what makes you think he was misogynist? He's not a holy cow to me, but I'd like to see you verify that claim. Hitchens, to me, was someone of the highest intellectual integrity, unlike that shifty slimeball chomsky.
Funny how it looks so survivable. I think I'd have to go through it in order to fully understand the horrifying sensations - a procedure I doubt I'd do well in.
I don't support this man for the most part but after seeing this I hope he at least understands the importance of 911 the patriot act etc and how that gives the government more power to torture Us citizens.
@JamesRideout123 Probably if you read his essays, you might find him more supportable. Most likely you've come to Hitchens when the press reacted to his support (which up to then had been an uncharacteristic position for him) which got him labeled a Neo-con. But he was actually quite a liberal, and the moniker of humanist is one that most Christopher Hitchens fans prefer to use. He was uncommonly brilliant, and one of our century's great gifts to the English language.
Check out my video about debunking religion. I give some examples of science proving religion false and ridiculous, it's a quick 9 minute video.....type in "Verbal Truth". Help spread the truth!!
@PressXtonotdie no no, that's not what I meant. The Vietcong used this very tactic against our brave men, and we called it torture back then. All the viet vets said it was horrible. Yet here we are using it today, with cheney calling it something else..
@LordKaisen Well, the way your first comment was phrased did sound like "well, it was done to us so.. fairs fair" And I quite agree. It is torture, it's abhorant and chaney is a twat.
@Cypher796 You'll find it is extremely difficult to breath through a soaked cloth. You literally slowly drown from the water. It would be a horrible, horrible sensation if continued for hours on end.
@Roflcopter4b It's not much of a sensation then is it? - because we would all find it difficult to breathe through a soaked cloth ... even without all the other procedures.
I thought it was more of a mental stimulation rather than a physical one?
@jeenyus720 My friend asked me if he could do this to me. After thinking about it for a while I decided to let him do it, if the conditions were exactly like on this video. I had five 100% reliable friends taking care of me and they could end the process when I wanted. After 5 seconds of the 1st splash of water I started panicing and I felt I had to get away. It honestly creeps me out to watch these videos now.
@jeenyus720 But you're a highly trained military man. Do you honestly think a common person, say your mother, could stand to bear this treatment for say, oh, 4 continuous hours?
@rw5791 It took two dozen SEAL's and two Black Hawks to take out the entire compound, so I doubt one man with wire could infiltrate the compound. Maybe two dozen SAS with sub machine guns and air support.

Wow. He didn't even last a full minute. I had no clue something so...bloodless can be that effective, that's scary. This is a very informative video, thank you so much sharing.
@rw5791 You must not pay attention to world news, because you would know that the CIA had little involvement in the raid in Pakistan. It was Navy SEAL Team Six that was given the duty and Barrack Obama gave the SEAL's much gratitude for what the accomplished the May night. And were do you get off throwing around hate terms like that. Were you raised under a rock away from civilised people that have enough respect for one another not to judge someone by the colour of their skin but the love and
@TheGamerPilot SEAL team 6 is the CIA's muscle.Do u honestly think panetta would let a bunch of commandoes go alone on a mission like this without a couple of top CIA agents in the lead?
Now,the british have a different style. They would send just one man with a garrote to kill bin laden and that agent would be back at the islamabad hilton ordering a vodka martini before anyone knew what happened.
and the martini?............shaken,not stirred,of course.
@rw5791 This just bugs me as a bartender. Martinis are made with vodka *by definition*, another liquor would make it a different drink. And they are ALWAYS shaken, no one *stirs* a martini. Alright, continue. *~*Waves*~*
@666dagstein Now lets talk about how we are wrongly invading Arab countries in the first place and how Arab soldiers wouldn't even see or do anything to Americans if we weren't over there.... Cheers
@DieOrBlink I think it's worth noting that Hitchens was in favor of the Iraq war, if you've come to this video to deliver an anti war sermon then it's the wrong place.
@Skep155 I respect Hitchens and he is a huge inspiration of mine. That being said I am still against the invasion of Iraq. I wasn't intending to preach an anti war sermon simply responding to someones comment about what Arab soldiers do to Americans;P
To put it another way, remember the times you've swallowed water down the wrong pipe. Now, take that feeling (and reaction), but lay flat on your back on a stiff board, which prevents you from sitting up to hack the water out, and put a water-soaked towel firmly stretched across your face. Add in some burly guys holding you down, yelling at you, pouring water on the cloth more ... yeah. Fun.
The angle of the board key. The water gets into your nose, and much like dunking your head backwards in a pool, if you don't have enough back-pressure, the water easily runs down your nose into your air way. This causes an impulsive need to cough violently to clear your air-way. Since your mouth is also blocked up, you can't get a breath to do so. So, your brain is going nuts trying to not just breath, but get a deep breath to clear the air-way.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I can't believe this douchebag. He actually needed to experience waterboarding (in controlled conditions) to come to the brilliant conclusion that DELIBERATE DROWNING is torture. What an idiot. This isn't brave at all, because actual waterboarding, which he once supported, can't be stopped as soon as you want it to. It keeps going whether you like it or not. You have to be exceptionally dim to see Hitchens as a role model.
@stirofemotion I don't believe you understand the circumstances. He performed in this demonstration to gain an apreciation of the craft if you will.
The most apt example I can think of at this late hour is after watching a 23 mile marathon going out and running yourself to get an apreciation for the labour invovled.
@LobsterPotsticker I'm glad he died from cancer.Anyway, enhanced interogation is not that bad. I was actually waterboarded by my own dentist. The device for making a mold for a crown sprung a leak and I had a cold at the time preventing me from breathing through my nose so naturally I began to panic as my mouth filled up with water. But otherwise it wasn't as bad as people are trying to make out.
@LobsterPotsticker I just watched a video of hitchens slapping down a 911 truther so I guess he wasn't all bad.I will retract my earlier statement about him dying from cancer.
@rw5791 were you also restrained and in a declined position? did you also have cloth over your face, then smothered with a towel? or did you just have the sniffles and some water in your mouth?
@2xnkote the cheese cloth drips water into the mouth creating the sensation of drowning.I actually had a water pipe filling my mouth with water and it felt like I was restrained with all the dental apparatus attached to me..Luckily,the doctor sensed my panic and the nurse pulled the leaking pipe .
In a very real way I experienced waterboarding .It's really not that bad.I think somebody with severe asthma has it much worse.
Why are u so worried about these terrorists.U need to get a life.
@rw5791 lol the irony. What terrorists are you referring to? and no you did not experience waterboarding, you had a mouthful of water and the sniffles.
@2xnkote uh,KSM,duh? The terrorist who was waterboarded by bush for the info that led 10 years later to the disclosure of OBL's hideout and his subsequent death at the hands of american cia agents which your nigro president took full credit for, like he did it all himself?
@rw5791 okay, so why would I be worried about a person that I have never heard of until just now? and do you think I am an American? wow you are full of assumptions son.
@2xnkote Because you're worried about people being waterboarded and KSM is the only person who was waterboarded............ergo, you're worried about KSM?
@rw5791 I see, but you are still assuming I am worrying about people being waterboarded, which i am not. Your intelligence seems to be in the 'below average' region.
He also advocated for reigning fire onto the people of Iraq and trying to start a war with Iran. He was a neocon radical atheist that make rational non-bloodthirty atheists look bad
@thaer12345 Apparently they like to listen to it. I read somewhere that one of the most popular songs to waterboard people to is Eminem's White America.
good video. but "we" the American SM do not get water boarded. We get raped, beaten unconscience and sometimes cut, branded with hot metal..starved..various methods. So before yuo feel sorry for the scumbags at GITMO, remember they get 3 hots and a cot in an environmentally controlled room. Where is this proof of exicution of Japanese soldiers for doing it during WWII?
@mosespike > So, because terrorists use more extreme forms of torture that makes it ok for us to use lesser forms? Good to know... Speaking as a veteran, I am appalled by the dismissive attitude people have toward torture.
As for the executions of war criminals, there are about 1000 articles about it, do a Google search. Politifact has a decent breakdown. The executions were a result of the "International Military Tribunal for the Far East" more commonly known as the Tokyo Trials."
@mosespike Yes because you know for a fact that everyone at gitmo is a "scumbag" even though we have reports that some of them are in fact just farmers that the local warlords gave to the US for some unknown reasons, but no you know they are evil doers. Do you know what psychopathy is? Because you fit the definition well.
To the man that had to balls to be tortured... I salute your bravery sir Christopher, and to the man that mocks this torture method as productive or necessary... I double dare you to lie down and drink your cup of bull-shit!
Hitchens announced the news like he’d brought it down from Mount Sinai, in a Vanity Fair article. “Believe me,” he told a waiting nation, “it’s torture.” Well, yeah. It usually is, when it happens to you. When it happens to somebody else, it’s “extreme interrogation.” I thought everybody over the age of 5 knew that, but as usual, I misoverestimated the media. Hitchens’ tame little torture session is the biggest S&M video on the web since “9½ Weeks.
16 seconds. I tried it and only lasted like 10 or 11.
It's just pouring water onto a towel that's draped over your face, and it sucks. And it's shocking how quick the effect starts. When the water goes up your nose, the first instinct is to exhale to clear it out. But when you try to inhale again, it's impossible to pull air through the wet towel.
I also felt that slight panic sensation of not being able to catch my breath for a couple days after.
@ijuslikemusic Yeah it seems to be starting to really spin out of control, the sopa bill and now this thing that takes away one of the biggest constitutional rights, its sick man, and we can do nothing about it.
" But I think there's a massive difference between instantaneous death and an indefinite amount of time not only living in horrendous conditions, but also being tortured whilst being innocent of the crime you are accused of. I just find it strange how Americans can get away with waterboarding innocent people while they had executed Japanese soldiers for doing it to American prisoners of war. I also despise how it's sugar coated. It's not enhanced interrogation. It's torture" well said
This really doesn't seem to bad, just difficult to breath.. But if even highly trained soliders in the miltary can't handle dripping water, very much doubt I could

It looks pretty mild, but I think it really is horrible.
I think it is "tame torture" for 2 reasons.
1. you can keep on doing this for a long time without killing somebody
2. Public opinion: you can mask it as enhanced interrogation, Using hot irons will be more tricky

Were you raised under a rock away from civilised people that have enough respect for one another not to judge someone by the colour of their skin but the love and
TheGamerPilot 3 weeks ago
@TheGamerPilot SEAL team 6 is the CIA's muscle.Do u honestly think panetta would let a bunch of commandoes go alone on a mission like this without a couple of top CIA agents in the lead?
Now,the british have a different style. They would send just one man with a garrote to kill bin laden and that agent would be back at the islamabad hilton ordering a vodka martini before anyone knew what happened.
and the martini?............shaken,not stirred,of course.
rw5791 2 weeks ago
@rw5791 This just bugs me as a bartender. Martinis are made with vodka *by definition*, another liquor would make it a different drink. And they are ALWAYS shaken, no one *stirs* a martini. Alright, continue. *~*Waves*~*

@DieOrBlink I think it's worth noting that Hitchens was in favor of the Iraq war, if you've come to this video to deliver an anti war sermon then it's the wrong place.
Skep155 3 weeks ago
@Skep155 I respect Hitchens and he is a huge inspiration of mine. That being said I am still against the invasion of Iraq. I wasn't intending to preach an anti war sermon simply responding to someones comment about what Arab soldiers do to Americans;P

To put it another way, remember the times you've swallowed water down the wrong pipe. Now, take that feeling (and reaction), but lay flat on your back on a stiff board, which prevents you from sitting up to hack the water out, and put a water-soaked towel firmly stretched across your face. Add in some burly guys holding you down, yelling at you, pouring water on the cloth more ... yeah. Fun.
therandomdot 1 month ago
The angle of the board key. The water gets into your nose, and much like dunking your head backwards in a pool, if you don't have enough back-pressure, the water easily runs down your nose into your air way. This causes an impulsive need to cough violently to clear your air-way. Since your mouth is also blocked up, you can't get a breath to do so. So, your brain is going nuts trying to not just breath, but get a deep breath to clear the air-way.

You have to be exceptionally dim to see Hitchens as a role model.
stirofemotion 1 month ago

@rw5791 even if this is true, that is not being waterboarded, that is having a blocked nose and a mouthful of water, you absolute cretin.

rw5791 1 month ago
@rw5791 watch the video ^^
2xnkote 1 month ago
@2xnkote yeah, they plugged his nose and poured water over him.It creates a sensation of drowning, duh?
This triggers panic in the brain, just as I experienced in the dentist chair.
Only difference is I was in the hands of people who were giving me medical care, not interrogators. But it was deprivation of oxygen, none the less.
rw5791 1 month ago
@rw5791 were you also restrained and in a declined position? did you also have cloth over your face, then smothered with a towel? or did you just have the sniffles and some water in your mouth?
2xnkote 1 month ago 19
@2xnkote the cheese cloth drips water into the mouth creating the sensation of drowning.I actually had a water pipe filling my mouth with water and it felt like I was restrained with all the dental apparatus attached to me..Luckily,the doctor sensed my panic and the nurse pulled the leaking pipe .
In a very real way I experienced waterboarding .It's really not that bad.I think somebody with severe asthma has it much worse.
Why are u so worried about these terrorists.U need to get a life.
rw5791 1 month ago
@rw5791 lol the irony. What terrorists are you referring to? and no you did not experience waterboarding, you had a mouthful of water and the sniffles.
2xnkote 1 month ago
@2xnkote uh,KSM,duh? The terrorist who was waterboarded by bush for the info that led 10 years later to the disclosure of OBL's hideout and his subsequent death at the hands of american cia agents which your nigro president took full credit for, like he did it all himself?
That terrorist?
rw5791 1 month ago
@rw5791 okay, so why would I be worried about a person that I have never heard of until just now? and do you think I am an American? wow you are full of assumptions son.
2xnkote 1 month ago
@2xnkote Because you're worried about people being waterboarded and KSM is the only person who was waterboarded............ergo, you're worried about KSM?

@rw5791 I see, but you are still assuming I am worrying about people being waterboarded, which i am not. Your intelligence seems to be in the 'below average' region.
2xnkote 1 month ago
@2xnkote well then why are you watching this video? This is where people come to bash bush for waterboarding.
It is,in fact, simply creating a feeling of drowning,The same as I experienced while recieving dental treatment on that fateful day some years ago.
rw5791 1 month ago
@rw5791 was just watching a few hitch videos, nothing to do with bush, ksm, terrorists or anything else you assumed.

good video. but "we" the American SM do not get water boarded. We get raped, beaten unconscience and sometimes cut, branded with hot metal..starved..various methods. So before yuo feel sorry for the scumbags at GITMO, remember they get 3 hots and a cot in an environmentally controlled room. Where is this proof of exicution of Japanese soldiers for doing it during WWII?
mosespike 1 month ago
@mosespike > So, because terrorists use more extreme forms of torture that makes it ok for us to use lesser forms? Good to know... Speaking as a veteran, I am appalled by the dismissive attitude people have toward torture.
As for the executions of war criminals, there are about 1000 articles about it, do a Google search. Politifact has a decent breakdown. The executions were a result of the "International Military Tribunal for the Far East" more commonly known as the Tokyo Trials."
HentaiGuy42 1 month ago
@mosespike Yes because you know for a fact that everyone at gitmo is a "scumbag" even though we have reports that some of them are in fact just farmers that the local warlords gave to the US for some unknown reasons, but no you know they are evil doers. Do you know what psychopathy is? Because you fit the definition well.

It's fucking torture.
