The rules of 5O over & 20/20 is to much in favor of batsmen. A bowler can't apply sustained pressure because he can only bowl a limited amount of overs. And to go with that there are fielding restrictions. I call it 'fast food cricket'!

@2004DAZZA but just a point - considering how poor india have been at test cricket overseas historically, and how good modern aussie teams have been, india has performed reasonably creditably there in this century by their own standards (except for the series that just got over)...i believe part of it was due to what i originally spoke about...even this series (1981) was an honourable 1-1 draw against a very strong aussie side partly because they responded to being provoked
@ConcreteLake I remember this Test very well. Australia only needed about 150 to win in the 2nd Innings. The MCG pitch in those days was a disgrace and not up to Test Match standards, it would break up after 2 days. The ball was barely bouncing above knee height on the last day. The delivery that dismissed Greg Chappell for example was short pitched, didn't bounce & bowled him.
But in Test Cricket these things happen and India took full use of the conditions. Good luck to them !

As an Indian I will give my balanced viewpoint. In those days, there were no TV replays, etc. so it is difficult for the umpire and Gavaskar did the wrong thing. But to be fair Australian umpiring in those days was terrible. The umpires always favoured the home side, so you can sympathize with Gavaskar. Anywayz...it didn't matter one bit...India went on to win that game.

@kickapakibutt whats your point? there has been many occasions where players have been given bad decisions and told to walk so in the end they all get balanced out anyway. gilchrist is probably the most sportsmanlike player to be around cricket in a long time and as a keeper myself, it is very very difficult to tell when it is bat or pad in situations such as the one you described, especially to spinners where visibility is minimal. shut up and stop being such a baby, it's part of cricket.

As an Indian I will give my balanced viewpoint. In those days, there were no TV replays, etc. so it is difficult for the umpire and Gavaskar did the wrong thing. But to be fair Australian umpiring in those days was terrible. The umpires always favoured the home side, so you can sympathize with Gavaskar. Anywayz...it didn't matter one bit...India went on to win that game.

Indian umpires were 10 times worse.
