When I think WCW, I don't think NWO, I don't think of Goldbergs Streak, I think of the cruiserweight division, and two most important home grown stars, Sting and Booker T.
great match shame about the circumstances that it had to take place under, fair doo's to booker for sticking round as long as he did til the end cos i bet he had other offers but he stayed loyal to wcw even though they held him back like they did, shame that wcw only really started pushing its young guys when it was to late, as awesome as booker was the only reason they gave it to him is cos ther was nobody else left to give it to go this moments bitter sweet cos at the time u knew wcw was done
that pop you here after Booker T wins title is from real fans enjoying a hard worker dedication to a shit company that held him back .....but it's only so long you can hold back greatness .ALL HAIL KING BOOKER !!!!
One of the best moments in WCW. One of the best workers in WCW who was never in the World title picture. Had McMahon been booking, there may have actually been some build up rather than the lame shoot angle that lead to this.
Booker T vs Consequences Creed in the stretcher match was the least watched in TNA. Creed is no Chris Benoit or Rob Van Dam, he's shown some potential to compete with a future hall of famer who is a 5 time WCW Champion. What an honor for Creed to go one on one with Booker.
OF all the Jeff Jarrett vids I don't know why im saying it on this one. But after the 25 people who should be in the hall of fame. Jeff Jarrett should be in the hall of fame at #26.
It's a shame Booker finally got his chance to shine when WCW was on the way down, could have been a great run for Booker if he woulda got a world title push during the height of WCW, shamed Hogan & Russo overshadowed this night
while this wasn't an exactly great match, this match is still a must-see mostly for the fact that Booker T finally got his overdue wcw world title victory. And fittingly, this was wcw's final moment of clarity
this reminds me of when stone cold finally won the wwe title in early 98, it was a breath of fresh air and it had alotta hype. then wwe kept the ball rollin and gave mandkind and the rock the title, then hhh. and by 2000 these guys were bonified main eventers, even kurtangle gotta huge push comin in. whle during that time wcw was still re-using the same guys, and by 2000 they finally got with the program with booker. but like everyone else said, it was too little to late. bout 2 years late
What a great moment for Booker T. The only thing about this that disappoints me is that Booker got the title b/c of Hogan and Russo's fight coming to a head earlier on. I really wish Booker could have been built up to the title and he got the belt way too late. He should have been the WCW World Champion way before July 2000 just 7 months before WWE bought out WCW.
they gave the title to booker t when WCW was a dying company....i personally thought booker t was a good champion....better than DDP, and the big show...two guys who had the WCW title before him....
This might sound odd but at one of the SuperBrawls when I saw Booker beat Martel & Saturn back to back in 2 title matches I knew he was ready to chase the World Title. SuperBrawl told me that Booker was more than a tag wrestler.
This match always makes me tear up along with Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit winning their first world titles. After everything Booker had been through growing up and busting his ass off for years and paying his dues, he was finally given the opportunity he deserved. Granted, for the wrong reasons. But I won't argue with the results here. Now if only his match with Triple H at wrestlemania ended this way too.
hey brother, in the grand scheme, in about 20-30 years from now, people will rank Booker T over HHH, because he worked his way up the ladder in THREE different companies to become a champion. HHH got it handed to him.
you know come to think of it you got to wonder did wcw/wwf always carry an extra main title to all there events?? just in case shit like this happened?
or perhaps flair was such an egotistical guy that he carried his title (from whenever he won it) around everywhere he went and russo was like flair we need to borrow the belt.
WCW finally stepped it up and had a some good ppvs in 2000 but I guess it was a lil too late. They relyed way too much on controversy and forgot about the wrestling.
i loved boker t having the belt, when he lost it to the rock at summerslam i lost all interest in the invasion storyline. aslong as booker had the belt i felt wcw was still sort off alive!
Following the years of disrespect the Big Gold Belt received with number of vacanies and joke champions, Booker T brought dignity back to the belt. This was WCW's last great move.
look, if wcw woulda killed the nwo crap after the 1st 8 months then made a great young enthusiastic guy like booker t, benoit, jeff jarrett, sid vicious or eddy guerrero then wcw never woulda folded. bischoff was even WORSE than russo was, not allowing dusty rhodes and/or kevin sullivan to keep being the booker for more than 3 fucking months jacked up the locker room moral & eradicated the company's continuity notonly with the wrestlers but also the fans
@theEricWalker that's not the real belt is why. Hogan had already left eairler in the day with the real belt, he wouldn't give it back after Russo threw it at him. The belt they have for this is the one from the 70's lol.
The sad thing about this whole match is that booker was never meant to have the match. Russo threw this together in like twenty min. and Booker (being one of the only real workers left in WcW) went out and did his thing.
Booker earned this bump way before the bs that lead up
Man if they would have pushed this back when booker and beniot where going best of 7 for the tv title they should have pushed there young talent more !!! I stopped watching WCW around 2years earlier and was watcing wwf/e cause it had a better product ....
Can we stay on topic a realize what WCW did i know they gave Booker T the belt late when the company was going down but this was a special moment 4 obvious reasons besides Ron Simmons & the Rock who is half black, what other black wrestlers have been world champion this was a great moment it shows that not only was Booker T getting over with the fans but he was a fighting champion who handle business the right way lets stick 2 the video & not what happened during the monday night wars...
Unfortunately he was past his prime at this point...too programmed.
Earlier Booker T was absolutely electrifying in the ring...you had no idea when he was going to do the "spinarooni," he'd just do it out of nowhere.
And he used to get a lot more air/leg reps for the scissor kick. Check his famous series vs. Benoit, for one of numerous examples of him lighting it up.
WCW fans loved Booker T, plus Booker T got big respect as a athlete from WcW. WWE started dismantling him piece by piece. Im glad he left, he deserved more than what they put him through.
completely agree, I hate my idiot friends who don;t know shit about wcw. Booker T is hall of fame material for sure, for this and his tag team accompplsihments!
Booker T didn't win a WWF or WWE world heavyweight title until 2006. By then, there were three championships, so winning one of them didn't mean much. He also was portrayed as being cowardly by having Sharmelle interfere during his match against Batista, and he had to cheat every time he beat Chris Benoit. They didn't allow him to be a fighting champion like he was in WCW.
Yes but as soon as he came in, he made an impact. I mean come on, his first moment on WWF TV was Book-Ending Stone Cold through the announce table, if thats not an instant push than i dont know what is, and even though he was a cowardly heel, he still was a damn good wrestler and a champion, that has got to mean something.
Well, considering Russo claims Hogan held Booker down for the 1st 14 years prior to this, WWE holding him down for 4-5 years doesn't seem so bad, lol...
Booker T was still pushed in WCW at the time when championships still mattered. He may have gone years before getting the world title, but even the WCW TV championship had value, most notably in the Booker T vs. Benoit series. WWE made a failed attempt to recreate that feud 7 years later, so obviously someone at WWE thought highly of it.
I think Booker T has always been better as a face than a heel, but he can be a heel without being the cowardly, silly goofball that WWE made him. He was still badass after his heel turn in TNA and would win matches without cheating.
Book End puts more toil on your upper spine and because the user does not go down with the opponent more strength is behind it. Ergo, tis better than the rock bottom.
@jackonwo I knew it wasnt. That would be like thinking when Sandman won the ECW title from Corino, ECW was going to be saved. Nothing to do with who the champs were in WCW or who had control of the product was the downfall of WCW. Same with ECW. WCW went under because of the bad business dealing with AOL.Time Warner and ECW went under because Paul Heyman is a horrible business man (bad business again). Business trumps EVERYTHING else in a wrestling promotion.
i think they did this so that they could go out on good terms with their fans. They all wanted to see one of their favourites win the belt and thats what happened when booker t became the WCW champ
Booker T winning the WCW would've been awesome for the company a year or so before this while they were still able to survive on their own. Unfortunatly, this was too little too late.
I couldn't believe how unprofessional Vince Russo behaved during this PPV. He made up for it a little bit by making this match but, although Booker T. was ready for the main event scene (moreso even than Jarrett), he wasn't WCW championship material yet. Russo had Jarrett do the same thing to Hogan that Hogan did to Sting @ Halloween Havoc, but he should've left the backstage politics out of the show instead of cursing and ranting. The fans didn't pay hard earned money to see Russo whine.
call me what u want, but i always get teary eyed when i see this. booker t is my childhood hero, still is, and always will be, so when i see this, i get emotionaly messed up, cuz thats my favorite wrestler.
This entire night was pretty much ironic considering what Russo did to WCW after this, and what Jarrett did to TNA in ints infancy, and even what Booker T became when he went to the WWE.
If you want the real heart and soul of WCW, it all boils down to who main-evented the last Nitro: Sting and Ric Flair. Borden has never and likely will never work in the WWE.
I'm from the UK nad I watched this and felt tears in my eyes. This was a truly great moment in the sport and really should have been done a long before it did happen.
its so funny how the crowd reacted to this. they were chanting russo sucks when the ref got knocked out, waiting for a bs finish, then booing when jarrett climbed to the top rope, when booker hit the bookend noone made a noise. ref made the count they were STILL scared to cheer.. They were waiting for a bs swerve or something then they announced it and ppl went nuts.
well, in defense of the people, it's not like Russo's endeared himself on giving the people what they want. I'd be shocked if he booked match, myself.
Too little too late. I would have started Booker's singles push in 96 and have Flair put the belt on him.

Exactly!!

i think they did this so that they could go out on good terms with their fans. They all wanted to see one of their favourites win the belt and thats what happened when booker t became the WCW champ
leroynwdl 2 years ago
I agree, I think people were tired of seeing Hogan the champ and WCW finally did something about it
bluethundershark 2 years ago
Booker T winning the WCW would've been awesome for the company a year or so before this while they were still able to survive on their own. Unfortunatly, this was too little too late.

I have to agree or if Booker T in 1997 feuding with the Giant over the US title would have did something.

At the time we all thought this was the beginning of WCWs comeback to the top.

I was so pro-booker at this time in 2000...i was glad he won the belt and ended WCW with the title...
russo f'd it all up though..granted bookers chance may never have happened this way...but they HAD months of planned matches and angles...

Booker T's the man

I couldn't believe how unprofessional Vince Russo behaved during this PPV. He made up for it a little bit by making this match but, although Booker T. was ready for the main event scene (moreso even than Jarrett), he wasn't WCW championship material yet. Russo had Jarrett do the same thing to Hogan that Hogan did to Sting @ Halloween Havoc, but he should've left the backstage politics out of the show instead of cursing and ranting. The fans didn't pay hard earned money to see Russo whine.

Booker T wasn't in WCW for 14 years at this time. He was there for seven years here.
Koolazzmike 2 years ago 2
This entire night was pretty much ironic considering what Russo did to WCW after this, and what Jarrett did to TNA in ints infancy, and even what Booker T became when he went to the WWE.
If you want the real heart and soul of WCW, it all boils down to who main-evented the last Nitro: Sting and Ric Flair. Borden has never and likely will never work in the WWE.

Shame, WCW did try and redeem itself with this move and in late 2000/2001 but the politics was just too much and and too late.

I'm from the UK nad I watched this and felt tears in my eyes. This was a truly great moment in the sport and really should have been done a long before it did happen.

lol that cheap ass belt is bent
BryanRocks718 3 years ago
Dude, it was an old belt. They used that belt for years before a new one was made.
shadowreaver87 2 years ago
yeah, after hogan took the new belt away, they took the old wcw belt back, which had the bent on top
levynleenen 2 years ago
you can tell the gold is whiter and the strap's brown
metalmadness00 2 years ago
how did that bend get on top of the belt.
themann0001 2 years ago
I honestly don't know. Seemed like it was always there.
shadowreaver87 2 years ago
They told that in an interview once, I really don't remember
levynleenen 2 years ago
its so funny how the crowd reacted to this. they were chanting russo sucks when the ref got knocked out, waiting for a bs finish, then booing when jarrett climbed to the top rope, when booker hit the bookend noone made a noise. ref made the count they were STILL scared to cheer.. They were waiting for a bs swerve or something then they announced it and ppl went nuts.
ricflairgowooooooo 3 years ago 2
well, in defense of the people, it's not like Russo's endeared himself on giving the people what they want. I'd be shocked if he booked match, myself.
michaelisajerk 2 years ago
At that point in Booker T's career he was at the top of his game. He deserved this more than anyone.

Booker t was better back in those days
devilzzz999 3 years ago
Nothing like this moment in wcw history.
Only the fact that Booker T was not rightfully pushed to become world champ. But I admit he was better than Ron Simmons.
devilzzz999 3 years ago 3
Ron Simmons was awesome. Harley called him boy, he could match Power with Vader.....Ron Simmons was awesome, the WCW at the time was not!

I tell you one thing. I'm white, and I was glad to see an African American win the championship. Not because Booker t was black.
Because he deserved it, being held back because he was black.

I'm black and I totally agree with you. This was one of W
