@stephencrjones sorry - composed by Paul Lewis - no question mark. I understand he was specially commissioned by Westward to write it, and it is similar to their ident tune at the time. He particularly brought in various Westcountry tunes, eg Uncle Tom Cobbly and all.
Re my last post... I was watching the first version in B&W... long before colour. The startup I watched in 1964 when I came to Torquay had an ITV testcard which changed to say Westward Television when the original music started playing and right towards the end ..at the height of the stirring tune it changed to a turning Galleon which started small and then grew closer and closer... wicked!!. I reckon both the startup tunes are (unknown to most) musical masterpieces.
There should be a woman walking up the hill with a bag of shopping at 3.34 but it has been deleted!!!.... used to watch this after school and I remembered that bit most of all.... otherwise brilliant quality.
All good stuff, but it's not the first one, that was in 1960 with different music to this, (composed by Hastings Mann) and also of course, in b/w. can't complain too much though, still the best independent television company ever. Anyone out there with the original, there must be someone. TSW archives, please post it up!!!
@celticboy1950 As far as I'm aware, celticboy, even though it was before my time, the original Westward startup just had a Picasso card accompanied by the piece "Westward Ho!", composed by Hastings Mann (as you say) and performed by Ron Goodwin and His Concert Orchestra.
This takes me back to when I was a kid, off school because I was sick. Telly didnt start until about 0920.
