I hate to throw controversy into the mix, but this sounds like it might've been recorded by different studio musicians than the typical Funk Brothers. For starters, the drumming sounds different (skins sound much taut or tighter). Bass sounds like a pick is being utilized (Carol Kaye?) Horns are tight, includes a trombone -- don't recognize that in other Motown recordings. And I was told by famed LA session drummer Hal Blaine personally that he was involved with recordings Motown did in LA
@tbirdtim There may be an answer to this. Just before this song was recorded, Berry Gordy bought a competing Detroit label, Golden World. GW had their own studio, and their own disc mastering facility. After that, Motown used GW (renamed "Studio B") for mixing, and recording strings, horns and vocals.
As for trombones, try Marvin's "Pride and Joy" or Smokey's "Baby Baby Don't Cry".
Hal and Carol were involved in Motown TV track productions, but they mostly copied the original arrangements.
IMO, this instrumental stands on it's own. Clearly Paul Riser is responsible for that strong arrangement. An incredible masterpiece and produced by my hero Henry Cosby
@tbirdtim : Also, Paul Riser (Motown's stalwart arranger) was himself a trombonist.

I tell you Motown's Funk Brothers were the best. Love the vocals too but the music is too much.
