  • One of my all time favs

  • OH MY GOD!!! I FINALLY FOUND IT!! I remember playing this game on my uncle;s Sega. I didnt remember the name of it but it honestly was the game that made me love video games!!!!

  • I loved this game as a kid. I had the hang on and safari hunt game. I bought astro warrior seperatly.

  • Man, I used to burn this game into my retinas I'd play it so much.

  • This Surely Revives fond memories

  • I am serious. And don't call me Shirley.

  • is it still possible to get this game onto psp, mobile games or pc?

  • How many of us did what he just did after defeating the first boss when progressing to the next level? HAHAHAH Yes!

  • That level 3 was always a bitch!

  • sure revive zamboni...FAIL!!! its Zanoni!!

dumb ass commentary too but cant effect much from a virgin versace faggot!!

  • Nice My First ever Top-down Shooter! I was so young this made me enjoy Gaming!!!

  • Actually never got past level 3. I just found out there was no level 4 :(

  • @diclofenako Yeah, levels 4-6 are the same as 1-3, except that they shoot more bullets at you.

  • This was the very first game I owned. I was 6 years old and had broken my leg, my dad bought me this game and I loved it. Sadly I never got past level 4 it was very difficult.

  • SURELY REVIVE ZANONI

  • i love retro

  • Where's the second part? I honestly can not find it.

  • I like these classic'ier game reviews better. Do more dude! :)

  • Why oh why do you keep avoiding the laser powerups!?

  • I really did love this game, but jesus fuck it was hard.

Honestly you couldn't die ONCE in the later stages for if you did, you'd be completely overwhelmed flying your underpowered dreamcast -controller ship.

  • rev/_ve Hope it worked =] /

  • This game was solid, but not especially great. This review is a little too glowing.

  • whoever's playing this game really sucks at it, sorry to say. They missed the power up truck twice and most of the game is playing it as the car or jet.

  • @soopahsoopah The power up truck was in Action Fighter, a game often bundled in the same cartridge.

  • OH..MY..GOD.. 3:25 ... Flying Headcrabs, now we're screwed

  • couldn't find pt 2 to this video

  • Why let numbers get in the way of mass-destruction...man... well put... Keep on with the awesome shmupage!!!!!!! its all i live for!

  • its a simple shooter with only 3 levels. but for some reason its super fun to play. maybe its because each enemy have their own distinct pattern.i remember playing this game.so much that the score went back to zero.

  • @abcmaya hahaha awesome it is fun, I wish it had more levels or an ending

  • @gregsageisdead me too. man... i wish it had more. couldnt get enough of astro warrior. and the music stuck with me even after twenty years. its so cool to hear that people enjoyed this game as much as i did. because back then it felt like i was the only one playing it LOL.

  • you should review Quake 1!!!!!

  • Where is part 2?

  • I never liked the speed getting faster but I preffer the laser beams.

  • is there a video without the voice? just the music?good job with posting the vid anyway

  • curse you, Mark!!! not only did I buy a Master System, I also bought Astro Warrior *and* a Sega Genesis 6-button Arcade stick!!! I'm LOVING THIS!!!

brilliant review, brilliant game-play and *fabolous* controller!

  • on that note:

the Sega MegaDrive/Genesis 6-button Arcade-stick works perfect on the Sega Master System as well

  • Can you do a review of the game 1942? It is a lot like this game, yet set on the ocean destroying japanese aircraft carriers as bosses. I own Arcade Legends 2 arcade machine. Its amazing. It has the original Joust, Defender, and about 100 others. Magic sword, Ghost 'n' ghouls/ghost 'n' goblins (Which is hard, but it would be awesome for you to review!) Thanks.

  • "Why let numbers get in the way of mass destruction?"

  • I loved this game back in the day! In the UK, the early Sega Master System's often came with Hang On & Astro Warrior built in. After playing this I desperately wanted a Master System. The Bitmap Bros borrowed a lot from this for their game Xenon.

I'm tempted to get one off Ebay, just for this. Emulation is cool but there's times when you want to have the real thing. :)

  • "why let numbers get in the way of mass destruction" something dick chenny would say

  • @yankonthis nice

  • That looks like a really fun game! When I first saw the title, I thought maybe it was a sequel to Astro Blaster, since Sega also created that game.

  • This game is apart of my childhood. alongside Pacman, Galaga, Pole Position, Outrun and the like this game was one of many games that sucked me permanently into gaming.

  • Dam it, now im in a retro mood. Time to load up the emulator and play some Astro Warrior.

  • I love this game but the only thing that it did not have enough stages!

  • This game is serious win! It came as the pack-in with my Sega Master System that I got back in '88. I already had a NES and wanted to see what the Sega was like, also picked up an Atari 7800 in '88.

  • <3 the 8bit explosion sounds!

  • Alpha mission AES for the WIN / R type 3 the third lightning XD

  • Astro Warrior is a cheap rip off from Tekham's (Tecmo) Star Force/Mega Force...

Not a bad game, It's really fun and I had it when I was a kid but now, old enough to know better, can't deny that fact ...

Also I'd like to recommend you to check out "Star Soldier" from Hudson. If you like Astro Warrior, you will like that one too.

  • I Have this on my PlayPal Plug & Play.

  • lol, I never had this game as a child but I acquired it recently when I bought myself a SMS for nostalgia's sake. I always crack up laughing at the "SURELY REVIVE ZANONI" part, someone needs to put that on a t-shirt for sure.

  • Hang-On came with EVERYTHING!

  • Okay, so we have (two iterations) of the Sega Genesis Collection: so where the f is the Sega Master System Collection!?! They could practically put the entire catalog on one dvd/blu-ray/umd. Sigh....

  • i played very much of this game as a little kid.

  • I spent hours playing this game when I was a kid. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane.

  • The asteroids look like POPS cereals. Gotta have my POPS.

  • God i loved this game...didnt it actauly come with the system?

  • I remember when I was little, someone was telling me that Astro Warrior was actually Dangar: Ufo Robo, the absolute first game I ever played. LIES.

  • Nebirus is the best !!!

  • Yeah good review! but um this goddamn game was supe5r hard to play and beat, especially after the second boss spaceship. I played this alot when it first came out on sega.Bought it at Toys r Us.

  • Astro Warrior ftw.

  • it kinda sucked because we only had two games for our master system: this game with hang-on and spy vs spy....and everyone else i knew had nes....we had that too...but i liked the sms better....the games were so different and more appealing to me....but i had one friend who had an sms who got every game when it came out, and he used to invite me over to his house regularly and we would play the hell out of em...shinobi...gangster town...captain silver...you name it he had it....at some point....

  • there is any key from keyboard wich can fire automatic? i play this game on my pc with Fusion Emulator but i always die cuz the fire is not automatic. if you can help me pls send me an answer. Thanx in advance:)

  • If the second round's theme doesn't get you pumped, you're already dead.

  • This was an amazing game.. i remember it was on a cartridge with some stupid hammering game but this was gold!

  • I had this classic, was my first sms cartrige... and i have to agree that is the best shooter ever made for master system.

But is a kind of game that you have to beat with the first life otherwise it get hard to handle.

I dont know why the people compare sms with nes, they are two diferent worlds, two potentialy 8 bits plataform, each one complete other one.

Sms has better video and collor graphics, but nes has loads of games... anyway, compare this its same as kick dead dog

  • Everyone I knew had the NES. I had one friend who had the SMS. Looking back on life, perhaps I was only friends with him because of this. His Dad was a crazy tweeker that apparently liked video games a whole lot. They had about a dozen games on the SMS. This one, Safari Hunt, Wonder Boy, Teddy Boy, Ghost House, Gangster Town....oh those were the times.

His crazy Dad also had a Vectrex which I thought sucked at the time.

  • My uncle give me his old Master System two days ago.

I'd like to find an Astro Warrior cartridge, this game looks amazing.

CGR should try to buy the MS game called Sagaia, by Taito; it is like R-Type and it isn't bad.

  • i still have it physically with the console, yes the game is great but can't beat the old guardian legend from NES :p

  • SO MUCH FUN!!! Just like flossbee said, Easy to Play, Hard as fuck to Master.

I think it's based off star force

  • Easy to play, hard to master. Gotta love these type of games.

  • It's stupid not to upgrade to the laser! The laser can shoot through a row of enemies with one shot AND it can shoot through barriers. Playing with the standard bullets is like playing handicapped.

Man, I played this game sooooooooooo much back then. I also had the Hang-on/AW combo cartridge.

  • Hmm... there never was a Part 2, was there?

I recall playing this game on the portable PlayPal 20-in-1 handheld. I found it rather enjoyable for the most part.

  • Comment removed

  • WHOA MY FIRST VIDEOGAME I remember I used to play this and rampage every freaking day when i was 4-5 years old.

It took me days to finally beat the first boss. lol!

  • I like that game!

  • I swear, whenever I played this, I always thought the enemy bullets looked like Corn Pops.

  • @candygameengine YES! That's what I thought of the asteroids!

  • memories........... this game was rediculously hard.

  • This reminds me of a space version of tiger heli but a little better.

  • Xevious is pronounced Zeh-vee-us cheers for the reviews

  • this was my favorite master sega game

  • The title screen of this game is ripped off from a famous Sci-Fi painting. I can't remember what it is though.

  • my favorite game of all time!!!!

  • YES!!!!! One of my favorite games of all time.

  • can't believe how much fun i had playing this game back in the day....except when it's one of the 3 only games you have it kinda gets boring after a while.....but still it's burned so much in my mind i had to find a review or some kind of recognition for the game online....and here it is conveniently located on youtube.......nice review...surely revive memories

  • My copy of this game still works! It gets so hard after beating the Nebula Zone when random things start shooting at you. Great review... I've had this game since 1988 and have never tried not picking up the laser.

  • I had this game with a new system. I loved it.

  • where is part 2?????

  • WARNING: Destroy Ice-smoothing vehicle.

  • A Zamboni?

  • The guy called it "Zamboni," so I just decided to play along.

  • Yeah I heard that after he got to it, I commented while watching haha. I forgot to comment after I heard him say that. Curse you mark

  • wow. at the beginning the ship looks like a flying dreamcast. oh sweet jesus! a real flying dreamcast would be so awesome!

  • @mutantcommunist WOW, I looked at it then thought the same thing..then scroll down and see your comment.!

    AGREED!

  • @mutantcommunist FLYING DREAMCAST AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA :D

  • Esse jogo era muito bom...inesquecível!!

  • I still have this game, also Space Harrier, Dead Angle, Hang On and Double Dragon, Master System just immortal

    Aguante el Sega amiguitoo!!!!

  • Reminds me of Star Soldier

  • I was going to say that too :) Me being a star soldier fan and well just about every other space shooter :P I'm gonna get this

  • Nice review. This game reminds me of Exoide-Z.

  • i loved this game! one of my favorite games for the sega master system.

  • great fucking video man. very entertaining. funny, smart, creative, and very true. i had that combo PAC and Astro warriors was my favorite game back then too

  • This looks like a cool game.

Why don't they make games as simple as this these days?

  • the combo (w/ hang-on) came with the SMS. when i think back on all the SMS games i owned and played, this is the most memorable. thanks for the review!

  • Hilarious review..The MDLT combo cart - lol I own a dedicated Astro Warrior. This shooter fuckin rocked! My 1987 purcahsed Sega Master System set came packed with a combo cart of Hang-on with Safari Hunt.

  • I like how you reference to the McDLT, wow - now there's a sandwich of yore.

  • The funny part of the review is he says he's gonna come back with another review with other end bosses bu the third level is the last, unless the next playthrough opens up a fourth.

  • Zanoni surely revive.

  • My Copy of this Game hadn't got HangOn on it. It had another Game called "Pit Pot" which was a small adventure Game with a Knight who has to collect treasure from a castle in Order to rescue the Princess

    strange.

  • Same as you

  • Are You Kidding!!!! I used to play this game years ago!!!

  • man that lase beam powerup was the best

  • I still have this game and my Sega master system!!

  • omg, that was great...brings back so many memories...

  • Damnnn that takes me way back! Awesome game!

  • Looks A LOT like Star Soldier (NES)!

  • I remember when I was a kid I had this game, and I liked to finish games. To my surprise this game has no ending or not that I know of, because once you complete the third screen you start all over again and enemies are much faster. The thing is I read in the manual that said you have to kill everything...so I did...I killed EVERYTHING on all 3 screens hoping to end the game...never ended.

  • fukkk yaaa i have this game .. its awsome...

  • This game was really fun to play as a kid, thanks for putting this up. I love the commentary

  • im still wondring why the nes dominated the market, this is just one of the amazing games they released for the master system or the sega mark 3

  • Ah...can't forget those Saturday mornings in the late 80's when my cousins would come over and bring the Master System with this game, Hang On, Safari Hunt...and what's that one like Spy Hunter, where your car changes to motorcycle and helicopter...

  • Action Fighter. I remember there was a name to enter to make you invincible to enemy fire. I digged that game.

  • the song at the end was dope. im actually thinking of getting the master system converter but is it really worth it?

  • Master System was cool. SOmetimes I just have random Master System kicks for no reason. But My MS broke, so I have to emulate now, which is not the same. I'm keeping the games in case I want to buy another one.

  • The only other shooter game that is better then this on the Sega Master System was Power Strike II. That game is AWESOME, a true classic.

  • Yeah, the power strike/M.U.S.H.A games are definitely my all time favorites! Some of the hardest too..

  • The ship looks like a flying dreamcast...

  • What the Fuck!!! Hey, commentator dude, just shut your mouth on the 2nd level!!! Your voice mess with the COOL tune!! You spoiled the best of this game, that tune!!!

  • Hey, you guys do you remember the SEGA master system cartridge when you bought this console? It had HANG ON and ASTRO WARRIOR...BTW the second level tune is really neat...

  • We used to call this game "asshole warrior" it was released on the Sega Card for Canadian markets.

  • If you like this shooter for the sms then get powerstrike for the sms. It is awesome and blowes this game away, dont get me wrong I love astro warrior. I played this back in the day then I sent away for powerstrike, cause you had to send away for it at the time(later they sold it), but it has everything you could want in a sms shooter and still holds it own today, thanks for the video's.

  • Do you know where i can download this?

  • This game terrifies the piss out of me.

  • Dude. There were at least four of the ultra power up fallin' down on ya's. AND YOU DIDN'T GET THEM. o_O Those babies let you SHOOT through the... whatever those things are called, but I think you get the idea!

  • Hahaha, I love this game for some reason.

  • gotta love the classics...

  • Mark, I'd like to recommend Ikaruga for the XBox Live Arcade. It is a frantic shooting game that I figured you would enjoy, seeing as how you enjoy playing a slew of shoot em' ups.

  • he has it,and already reviewd it.

  • Oh, thanks. I haven't been able to keep track of all his reviews because he puts so many out so damn fast haha.

  • I love the exploding wagon wheel on the cover of the game.

  • The "I" in warrior is a lightning bolt lol.

  • "Why let numbers get in the way of mass destruction?"

You sound like Gengis Khan, lol

  • I never had a Nintendo. I had a SMS growing up. I loved Astro Warrior. I also had the Jungle Hunt/Hang On combo. You also need to try these games that defined the system for me: Quartet, Wonder Boy 3; The Dragon's Trap, and Aztec Adventure. Oh yeah, and I also lovingly grew up on the SMS version of R-Type and Fantasy Zone.

  • looks a lot like Star Force on the arcades, have you tried that one out ? it's a great shooter too.

  • Awesome shooter for the SMS. This is a very challenging game indeed but it's not impossible to play. Astro Warrior is a bread and butter shooter that will test the mettle of any shootemup fan. The music is outstanding. 5 stars

  • SMS AND NES ARE THE RADEST!

  • Yes! Master System! The lack of master system reviews was bothering me.

  • Is it just me, or does this game's graphical... "style" look a lot like Uridium? The "tiles" you fly over are almost exactly the same, and even the player's ship looks kinda simillar...

  • COOL

  • I HAVE AN SMS SO I CAN GET THIS ^^

  • 711 videos, wow

  • Hey! Yugo's were great (if you were a student without any cash for something better =D)

    Anyways 5stars 4 you!

  • Can you make your top 10 flying shooters? :)

  • I bought this game as a kid from Wembley market, but mine came with Pit Pot in the combo pack, instead of Hang-On.

Have you thought of doing a review/feature on the Sega Cards at all yet Mark? Those were pretty awesome, especially at the time, look a game on a slightly thicker credit card! Radical :D

  • Pit Pot? Never heard of that one. I am assuming it never had a US release. Correct me if I am wrong.

  • Well the version I had was a US copy...

PitPot was a launch title for the Mark III, that they re-released with Astro Warrior in the west.

I think there's an arcade game of it too, it's sort of like a cross between bolderdash and Zelda, you hammer out holes in the floor to trap enemies.

  • Interesting. I might import that then.

  • The Astro Warrior/Pit Pot combo cart was released in Europe, but not the US.

  • Thanks for the info. BTW do you know if the Japanese Mark III My Cards will work on a US SMS?

  • Looking at the SMS Power forums, only Woody Pop will work on a western SMS as the others have the wrong region code. Apparently, they will play on a GEN/MD with a Power Base Converter. SG-1000 cards don't work, either, even on a GEN/MD with a PBC because the GEN/MD doesn't support the SG-1000 video modes (which is why F-16 Fighting Falcon doesn't work right).

  • Bummer. I wanted to get Machine Gun Joe...>_>

Glad to hear Woody Pop would work though.

  • That being said, I guess the paddle controller doesn't work right on an export system.

  • Damn. Thanks for saving me from wasting money then.

  • McDLT? What on earth is a McDLT.

  • I think he was saying BLT.

  • No it was McDLT. It was a reference to an old gimmick at mcdonalds in the 80's

  • See if you can get Aleste for your sms. It's a great SMS shmup.

  • SEGA RULZ!

  • Whao... this looks almost just like Guardic Gaiden or whatever it's called with the female space ship girl thing for NES.

  • Hell yeah I have always really enjoyed this game. Awesome video man.

  • McDLT... wow... I do remember those. My dad loved them.

  • sweet

  • you should definitley try the Soldier/Star Force series by Hudson Soft., it has the same feel.

  • It's Zanoni! Fun game!!

  • Great game, I saw this one at a garage sale ages ago and i snatched it up for 50c or something, the game is great and the price was right. You gotta love the retro stuff.. Excellent stuff Mark.. can't wait for Nintendo week. WOAH WOAH WOAH!!!!

  • If i can find this I'll definitely pick it up.

  • You should have no trouble. Hang-On/Astro Warrior was the pack-in game for SMS.
