To get 9 squares, you need to build a Workbench (or Crafting Bench, whatever you call it). To do that, get wood from trees and turn them into planks. In your 4 squares, put 1 plank in each square to make the crafting bench. Viola!

@Rocketdude98 There are special areas underground with natural cobblestone and mossey cobblestone walls, celings and floors. Inside those areas there will be a chest and a mob spawner. If you are on peaceful then no mobs will spawn and inside the chest will be stuff like apples,string,iron ingots,saddles and stuff like that but the caverns are extremly hard to find. So it is either fighting or finding underground caverns.
