  • George Hearn...way imposing presence; he scares the living tar out of you.

  • I am in love with the way George Hearn says the last 'street.' So spooky!

  • can someone please tell me what is illustrated on the sheet/canvas at 1:30? is it an upside down version of the inferno? i really want to know..

  • @Hsjobrother I can't really tell myself. I recorded this when TCM showed it, and was trying to figure out the sheet. My best guess is that it's the full picture of the small paintings that they used for the introduction (where they showed the credits at the very beginning). I could be completely wrong though.

  • Attend the tail of sweeney Todd his hands were brisk and his dick was hard

  • No matter the version you watch/buy... It doesn't compare to seeing it live. Best theater experience that I've had, hands down.

  • Anyone else notice the beginning music is Lucy's music?

  • add lyrics to the description plz? you would be my hero!

  • Ik everyone's jealous... No joke Sweeney is my last name but don't worry I won't kill u ;)

  • @SweeneyToddlover1997 really? You're lucky. I wish my last name was Sweeney, that would be a lot of fun :D

  • This is confusing. Someone else said the first name of the guy who played Sweeney in this one was Len... But before that, someone else said it was George... I think I believe whoever said it was George Hearn now, though. I dunno why, it just sounds more reasonable to believe.

  • @CosplayCore yep. george hearn

  • @CosplayCore Len Cariou originated the role of Sweeney on Broadway, & he is on the Original Cast Recording, and George Hearn took over the role during the Broadway run, then took the role on the 1982 tour, from which this well-travelled and popular video recording was made. This was my first introduction to this masterpiece of a musical, and shall always be my favorite version!! Funny enough, it was my high school BAND DIRECTOR who introduced me to Mr. Sweeney Todd of Fleet Street!!

  • @CosplayCore Len Cariou originated the role on Broadway, and won a Tony for it in 1979. I saw that production, and Len was magnificent! George Hearn took over the role when Cariou moved on. Believe or not, Hearn does not come close to Cariou's stage presence, and always seemed a little overpowered by Lansbury's star quality.

  • As much as I like the play, I like the Depp's version only slightly better.

  • the whistle still scares me every time and I'm IN the show as Lucy/Beggar Woman and I have to keep from jumping when the whistle goes and he "slits" my throat!

  • just ordered mine!

  • is there a cd recording of this cast...not that I don't like the OBC, but I really these particular soloists

  • Thank you so much for this!!!!!

  • His voice give me chills. lol

  • I did this show at my school.

It was one of the best experiences of my life!!!

I love acting&singing, they are my passions.

  • This is what I love about Sondheim musicals they actually film these performances and distribute them on DVD

BTW George Hearn is easily my favorite sweeney

  • 2:46...I've seen this DVD a hundred times and that moment still gives me goosebumps.

  • It won't let me link it directly, but go to Amazon, and look for "Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (First National Tour) (Keepcase) (2008)".

    Apparently, they recently re-released it.

  • @MiaAshbrook If I remember correctly it shows a beehive which shows the various classes of people in london. The poor, working class, etc.

  • Burton got me hooked on it with the killer film, and, after finding out it was based on a play, now it's probably the only play that I'm actually a fan of. I can't wait to get the chance to see someone perform it live!

  • This version is clearly more lively because it's a play and meant to be a musical. In the film, Burton purposely had the characters not use facial expression and hand gestures because the music told the story and emotions. Otherwise, it would be strange to have people and crowds randomly burst out into song in a movie.

  • @Poisonedbyyou tho there are movies made where crowds of ppl do that lol but i get wat u mean :)

  • Daaaammmmittt wtf!!! They shud have kept the ballads in the movie version! it wud have made it "epic" instead of just "good" DAMN U TIM BURTON!!! lol

  • @Eerondeimon i said the same thing when i saw tim burton's version

  • I love the movie's cinema photography and how it makes it black and white and yet it's not. However the cast and talent in this stage version is 3859203958582 times better in my opinion.

  • @franknfurter75 I personally don't think that the movie version does Sweeney Todd justice. It's a really masterful piece on the part of Sondheim.

  • @franknfurter75 This movie of the Johnny Depp Version!

  • 0 people need shaves

  • thnxz 4 uploading this this is my ABSOLUTE fav. play!!! thnxz!

  • I just watched the Burton version, and already this seems alot more lively and interesting.

  • @deathbunny32 this version is more lively but I think the Burton version is darker and more realistic (and better singing if you ask me :o )

  • @deathbunny32 Well Burtons version has a lot of his style in it. Very dark, gloomy, sadistic, and not a whole lot of smiles. This is a play, a musical play, meant to keep the audiences attention with action instead of fancy camera angles.

  • The high pitched noise made me jump out of my seat!

  • @Gypsygirl2113 It's a steam whistle -- freaked me out the first time I watched, too.

  • I love the motif of Green Finch and Linnet Bird in the prelude towards the end...Still the same rhythm and almost the same notes, but such a different mood. Sondheim is just soooo good.

  • only 2,905 views.

    some people need a "shave"

  • For whoever is a huge fan of this version of Sweeney Todd- actually owning the DVD is loads better than watching it on here (I had watched it here previously before buying the DVD). It is much higher quality in picture and it's easier to see the facial expressions on the characters. I recommend for anyone who plans on re-watching this over and over again. :)

  • @TheMajesticPigeon and where might one find a DVD copy of this very performance/same cast? 8D

  • @TheMajesticPigeon do you know where I can buy this movie? it is available on amazon.com?

  • @Kejra You're welcome! I'm just sorry it took me so long to reply to you! (I don't check my youtube very often)

  • @TheMajesticPigeon

I want this DVD for Christmas or for my birthday on November 9th. I have it on my list. I haven't finished watching it on here so I can save some surprises for when I get it. :)
