this is a great speed to play along with my fiddle/ mando as I am a beginner on these 2 instrument. I will tackle the guitar next.! Love the speed, thanks again!
Hey Orrin! I took your workshop a couple of years ago at the California Coast Music Camp. We did Rock The Cradle Joe, Sandy River Belle and Hard Times. I learned lots. I highly recommend you as a teacher. You do a great job.
This is a superb video for the level I'm at; THANK YOU!! Only problem is it'll take me DAYS to get in down in tab; is there nothing we can do to persuade you to provide us with the TAB in order to spread the flatpicking gospel, O great one??!!
Know why this clip sounds better than most things on YouTube? - because a professional audio/video guy recorded it - for a DVD that the publisher's of Flatpicking Guitar spent real money producing. The TAB for it - as well as for the other tunes included - COMES with the DVD. So there IS something simple that you (and well as all the other indignant freeloaders er, respected fans) can do to acquire said TAB: purchase the DVD.
Hey Orrin-I have heard alot of people play this tune and you are the best. How about another video where you just play it "full up" for about 6 minutes? Great!!!
Orrin -- great version of this tune. I have your "Hot Licks For Bluegrass Guitar Book". Always wondered -- who are the two guitarists shown on the cover ?? Thanx !
Many of the good flatpickers lightly touch the pick guard just to guide the picking hand (Norman Blake, Tony Rice, Doc Watson, Bryan Sutton). I was watching a Bryan Sutton DVD the other day and he says most people he sees rest their hand on the bridge and that will really show down the picking hand and not allow you to get full tone. Just FYI.
hahahah lmfbo you expect me to do that,, i must be a slow learner or something because i doubt at 35 i can ever begin to learn something that advanced and it would rather take me etenity which i havent got lol
Motivation has a lot to do with it. But it can be very frustrating, and if you don't have the patience then you will stop before you get a hang of it.
I'm 28 now, and I've always been too impatient to learn these things, but I'm starting to pick it up now and found that I have a lot more capacity than I thought. So just go ahead!
Im 62 years old, been playing for 45 years and I understand you. Im a better audiance than I am a player. Frustrating though. Its enought to drive me nuts to see 14 year olds playing better than I ever will.
Yeah. But some of those 14 year olds never learn to get a date or pass their Algebra exams. :) If playing music has enriched your life, don't 'fret' (ha!) over what other accomplish.
i agree 100% empiremonkey most musicans wish they did not have to play july bluegrass outdoor events and wish they had went to school and work in a nice cool ac building in the day and pick for fun when they want and not to pay the damn light bill!
As good as this segment is, it is only a fraction of the excellent instruction of the entire DVD lesson. Of all the video lessons I own, this is the stand-out. If you're on the fence about purchasing yet another flatpicking DVD, get off the fence and buy this one. Thank you Mr. Star for creating a meaningful explanation of what it's flatpicking is about. I hope one day to attend one of your workshops or a private lesson.
I recently purchased this DVD. I highly recommend it. I'm learnin' heaps. I don't have access to any formal lessons where I live, so DVD's like this are helping me a lot. Thanks for the great music.
i agree. cause surely it should be backward slash. PLEASE tell us why its so! (brill lesson!)

The slant on his capo is awkward to me but he is a National flatpicking champion and I'm not so...take my comment with that knowledge.

The Chords for this song are the following:
Part 1:
D - - GDA
D - - GDAD then Repeat and then
Part 2:
D - E A
DAGDGDAD
You should be able to catch on.
mklove119 4 years ago 3
Kind of you to submit the chords to this wonderful tune. Can I make a suggestion?
In part 2 - try going to an Em rather than a straight E .
Also , capoed up to 2nd fret playing in C position putting in an Dm instead of A sounds great.
bluegrasscannuk 4 years ago
Dm instead of D I should have said

What is he doing with his right hand. I anchor mine on the bridge. It looks like Orrin is anchoring with his pinky on the pick guard.
