  • i agree. cause surely it should be backward slash. PLEASE tell us why its so! (brill lesson!)

  • The slant on his capo is awkward to me but he is a National flatpicking champion and I'm not so...take my comment with that knowledge.

  • brillant cheers Dave

  • he's way better than the guy from expertvillage

  • anyone who likes this can get some good lesson from ken middleton hes on you tube and teaches basic but nice bluegrass tunes on geetar and uke

  • all you need is to book few years to learn this :)

  • If you don't know the tabs, this lesson is not really helping.

  • " even dobro"! lol.great video-thanks.

  • this is a great speed to play along with my fiddle/ mando as I am a beginner on these 2 instrument. I will tackle the guitar next.! Love the speed, thanks again!

  • Thanks for this great lesson for beginning flat pickers like me. I am a hammered dulcimer player who loves the guitar and I want to play like you do.

  • best lesson on youtube. thank god for this one. i MUST get this dvd!!!! WHERE?!?!?

  • Great teacher

  • Nice soundin' D28.

  • What an excellent teacher!

  • Definitely on my list to post, thanks for the lesson!

  • we need a little spiced rye in there

  • Hey Orrin! I took your workshop a couple of years ago at the California Coast Music Camp. We did Rock The Cradle Joe, Sandy River Belle and Hard Times. I learned lots. I highly recommend you as a teacher. You do a great job.

  • damn,..wish i could play that..i think if i practiced my whole life i wouldn't be able to pay that.

  • Josh Groban is right. Don't give up. This song is'nt as hard as it looks, just keep practicing slowly and you'll get there in no time!

  • He's right, it took me a day.

  • @Lynnieburd believe me you could

  • Has a Celtic ring.

  • Very nice right hand there sir.

  • haha this guy likes food references, really good lesson

  • Thanks for the tips! What a cool D-28, what year is it?

  • All the food analogies really helped!

  • Great Martin !

  • super

  • i could'nt get to the rest of the lesson because i liked the way he played in the beginning and watched it twelve times in a row

    LOL

  • Thanks!!!

  • This is a superb video for the level I'm at; THANK YOU!! Only problem is it'll take me DAYS to get in down in tab; is there nothing we can do to persuade you to provide us with the TAB in order to spread the flatpicking gospel, O great one??!!

  • Know why this clip sounds better than most things on YouTube? - because a professional audio/video guy recorded it - for a DVD that the publisher's of Flatpicking Guitar spent real money producing. The TAB for it - as well as for the other tunes included - COMES with the DVD. So there IS something simple that you (and well as all the other indignant freeloaders er, respected fans) can do to acquire said TAB: purchase the DVD.

  • This is Exceptional.

    Very Soulful

    DDR

  • Wow, that is some great flatpicking! And you are an excellent teacher too.

  • I really like this song. Where can I get the tab for it. Can you let me know.

    thanxs

  • Thank you Orrin. I learned so much from your video.

  • You're welcome. (I too have found YouTube to be a great resource when I'm trying to learn new tunes (most recently some Celtic stuff);

    Orrin

  • Hey Orrin-I have heard alot of people play this tune and you are the best. How about another video where you just play it "full up" for about 6 minutes? Great!!!

  • Anyone have a tab for a reason like this?

  • my real name is Orrin bester

  • Orrin -- great version of this tune. I have your "Hot Licks For Bluegrass Guitar Book". Always wondered -- who are the two guitarists shown on the cover ?? Thanx !

  • I believe that is Carter Stanley and on eof their young lead players (whose name I don't know).

  • I think that lead player on the cover might be a young Larry Sparks with Carter Stanley.

  • staaahhhhh!!!! pure fiddle pulse......thank you.

  • Nice!

  • FANTASTIC!

  • Thank you so much, its so appreciated!

  • What gauge strings are you playing and what gauge pick are you using?

  • You`re a great picker.

    Great lesson. Thanks.

  • The Chords for this song are the following:

    Part 1:

    D - - GDA

D - - GDAD then Repeat and then

    Part 2:

    D - E A

    DAGDGDAD

You should be able to catch on.

  • Kind of you to submit the chords to this wonderful tune. Can I make a suggestion?

In part 2 - try going to an Em rather than a straight E .

Also , capoed up to 2nd fret playing in C position putting in an Dm instead of A sounds great.

  • Dm instead of D I should have said

  • Could you please announce the chord structures through which you are moving. Thanks.

  • "What we start out with is what we call "po-ta-toes" i've never heard anyone say it like that i've always just heard "taters".XD

  • Great ! Thanks

  • What is he doing with his right hand. I anchor mine on the bridge. It looks like Orrin is anchoring with his pinky on the pick guard.

  • Many of the good flatpickers lightly touch the pick guard just to guide the picking hand (Norman Blake, Tony Rice, Doc Watson, Bryan Sutton). I was watching a Bryan Sutton DVD the other day and he says most people he sees rest their hand on the bridge and that will really show down the picking hand and not allow you to get full tone. Just FYI.

  • Cool man. I'm going to have to work on that. I've been thinking about getting the Bryan Sutton DVD myself.

  • A really nice guy. I live about an hour away from him.

A fucking amazing alternate picker too.

  • hahahah lmfbo you expect me to do that,, i must be a slow learner or something because i doubt at 35 i can ever begin to learn something that advanced and it would rather take me etenity which i havent got lol

  • Never give up, you never know what you might be capable of until you try.

  • Motivation has a lot to do with it. But it can be very frustrating, and if you don't have the patience then you will stop before you get a hang of it.

I'm 28 now, and I've always been too impatient to learn these things, but I'm starting to pick it up now and found that I have a lot more capacity than I thought. So just go ahead!

  • Im 62 years old, been playing for 45 years and I understand you. Im a better audiance than I am a player. Frustrating though. Its enought to drive me nuts to see 14 year olds playing better than I ever will.

  • Yeah. But some of those 14 year olds never learn to get a date or pass their Algebra exams. :) If playing music has enriched your life, don't 'fret' (ha!) over what other accomplish.

  • i agree 100% empiremonkey most musicans wish they did not have to play july bluegrass outdoor events and wish they had went to school and work in a nice cool ac building in the day and pick for fun when they want and not to pay the damn light bill!

  • right on man but if ever you make another tune show where the fingers go and slowly and repeat it over and over

  • I agree. I dont even have a clue what his left hand is doing.

  • Beautifully done on what appears to be a fine old Martin. D28?

  • Great job Orrin, see you at Augusta.

  • As good as this segment is, it is only a fraction of the excellent instruction of the entire DVD lesson. Of all the video lessons I own, this is the stand-out. If you're on the fence about purchasing yet another flatpicking DVD, get off the fence and buy this one. Thank you Mr. Star for creating a meaningful explanation of what it's flatpicking is about. I hope one day to attend one of your workshops or a private lesson.

  • great job man!

come to see my video! : )

  • Very helpful to this struggling picker, appreciate you sharing your expertise...

  • any tabs for this?

  • yes - in the booklet that comes with 2-hour instructional DVD that this is excerpted from.

  • nice. i'm still workin on it, but i'll gettt it.! thanks for the vid.

  • this guy is good

  • Great tune, good teacher - thanks a lot for this lesson

  • Have a mando, just bought a guitar. So, quite excited to find lesson for this tune for guitar. Thanks for your time sir.

  • nice orrin - how about a mando vid?

  • I recently purchased this DVD. I highly recommend it. I'm learnin' heaps. I don't have access to any formal lessons where I live, so DVD's like this are helping me a lot. Thanks for the great music.

  • Orrin's a great teacher. I have both his dvds. I'm glad to have this opportunity to post a thank you.

  • This guy really likes his health food. Is he a dietary manager on the side?? Very good ... I'm gonna use this ... pretty good flatpick'n song !!
