I only had the miracle world version built in my master system, and always wanted the other Alex Kidd games. Now that I see this, it's funny how many of the concepts got integrated into Sonic. The blue screens in between the level for example, or the "carts" driving over the pins then falling into the lava which went right into Sonic 2... :)

I distinctly recall the first-stage Boss "Kabuto" being previously named "Mari-Oh" in an early build of the game.... perhaps only in Japan, or was the name changed to Kabuto on account of the blatant parody on rival Nintendo's Mario, and the possibility of a lawsuit? I personally like how SEGA of Japan had initially named the first-stage Boss Mari-Oh, as a way of poking fun at the competition! Really, I'm not joking at all.... Kabuto was originally named Mari-Oh, and looked A LOT like Mario!

Believe it or not , this game never was released in Japan. Bomber Raid was the last Sega Mark III game over there. Sega just continued making SMS games for the western markets especially the PAL regions where the system sold the most.

@RaptorLeeSon You are correct, i have the original game with "Mari-Oh" as first boss. Also, despite the game being so familiar to the japanese culture, it was never released in japan. It was intended to be like nintendo's mascot. Notice as you fight him, he shoots fireballs, the same as Mario when he power ups with the flower.

And again , when "Mari-oh" is hurt, he shrinks.

Of course Alex couldnt kill " Mari-oh" if he was a racoon flying in the sky eh? :P

He keeps the whole "shrinking down when hit" aspect of his Mario likeness but his sprites were changed. He originally had a big nose and moustache like a certain plumber we all know. haha The game wasn't ever released in Japan, though.
