This is one of the most moving and authentic vocal performances I have ever seen. I dont understand french, but I know excactly what she is trying to tell me. Another female performance in this league would be "I Loves you porgy" with Nina Simone (the old live version from the sixties)....Check it out.
Whoever says Mireille Matthieu does not have a good voice does not have ears to hear, no offense to anybody, I do not think it is fair to say: "tries to mimic Edith Piaf, though she has not her talent nor her voice"... nobody can imitate or mimic a good voice, voices are unique, but it can happen that someone will born with a similar voice from the past.
Honestly, this is the best version ever for me. Maysa say a few things wrongly and Jacques Brel never makes me cry. Mireille, herself, she feels every word, she cries with the music, she's absolutely fantastic. Of course, she's no Edith Piaf (which I love more than life too), but it doesn't mean that she isn't a good singer, because, my darling, if you think so, you're absolutely insane! Anyhow, Mireille is amazing and no matter what people say, I love her more than everything in this world. <3
well I don't now what you understood about what I told, but I totally agree with your statement but the original is still better than the copy, I know also Mireille Mathieu and ihave followed her career when she started and i certainly don't react negatively toward her, but Brel is Brel, and Mireille is on another level...
Maysa matarazzo and Nina Simone? WTF... They cant even pronounce French well... On that one, the original will always be the best, because Brel is the best on Brel materials. Mireille Mathieu is a brillant singer, but she's far, very far, from the original.
It seems easy not to be a fan of Mireille, as she seems sometimes to be too much mainstream (to say it friendly). But listening to the interesting interpretations of her proves, that she is really good.
Also this version of Brel's song is nice to hear and proves that.
When I was dragged to an Edith Piaf tribute a few years ago, a pal downloaded a bunch of her songs so I could familiarize. THIS song by THIS gal was on there. I thought it was Edith. It's the ONE song I LOVED on that CD. I read Piaf's bio, I searched her discography...At last! It was Mireille! Sinatra, Nina Simone, Cyndi Lauper...Many have covered this Jaques Brel tune. "IF You Go Away ....in English. Well, I'm happy to finally find the face of the voice that first sang it to me.
@islandjerry -uh, if you were listening to Mireille in 1959, you were living in Avignon, not Anchorage and she was 13. Do you mean '69 ?,you beat me by 4 years in Andover .Thank God for public libraries; the best deal in America. I checked out "Mon Credo" and never let loose of it, you can ask everyone in town. A HOMERoid/ian from the cosmic hamlet by the sea. You can ask them here as well... This is so much FUN...you can talk to so many like-minded Friends w/o going into a meditative state.
Hey Jamalyjamal - put up or shut up. How about I drop some random slur about you and run? Finally, were getting somewhere - yeah, she's a Real-honest -to-God Human Being - that's what I LIKE about her, she's REAL. And HONEST. Unlike you, apparently. I dare you, Big Guy. My reality-based meetings with her will eclipse your whatever it is you have in for her, delusions every single time. Others' as well. Let's hear the TRUTH about Mimi from those who know her.
Nice version, but please listen to the version of Mari Trini "Ne me quitte pas", according to said Jacques Brel, was the best feminine version of this song.

@margot2001 Newsflash she is not rying to be Eith Piaf. Piaf never sold 200 Million records or recorded 2500 songs.Mimi ecllipses PIAF. All three performers are excellent in their own way..
@kimbo99 Like usual another fun Piaf who attacks Mireille!Nothing new in fact!I am really sick about this thing, many of them even can make differences between their voices. If they prefer Piaf than to lisen Piaf, but don,t insult Mireille who evidently has a great artistic personality.Bravo fun's Mireille cos they don't insult Piaf!
@kimbo99 That's a very diplomatic response! After all these years I just wish people would stop comparing Mathieu with Piaff. They are totally different in every conceivable way.
Maybe I am wrong , but my perception is that people constantly view Piaff and her tragic life through 'rose tinted spectacles', To be quite frank, Piaff's voice bears no comparison to Mathieu's, although I still love listening to Piaff and I have a number of her records from my very early teens.
@kimbo99 I think its not very relevant to judge an artist according to the numbers of CDs he sold ... btw, i believe mireille mathieu actually tries to mimick Edith Piaf, though she has not her talent nor her voice... She's is just very good at shouting. For those who appreciate what she sings, i think the more impressive song she performed is in "Paris Burning".
English is not my mothertongue, i apologize for the mistakes i may have done.
@Antonin2000 I was captured in1967 by Mirelle. It required only 30 seconds on Sydney TV. A prisoner ever since, I have been. I also have every Piaf record.Mireille sings with Pavarotti That requires a very good voice. Why dont you just say you prefer Piaf and stop listening to Mireille?. I adore them both.
@kimbo99 I remember watching Mireille Mathieu on a Vietnamese TV channel, when I was about 13, starting at high-school, in the early 80s. She was singing, probably, "Une Femme Amoureuse", based on her outfit. My uncle, who had spent time in Europe, told me that she was the most famous singer of France at that time. Listening to Mireille's songs is like reliving my teens. Also, I don't speak French fluently. I use French songs as a way to improve my French. Thank you for sharing her songs.
Pardonnez mes gaffes!

@Antonin2000 If somebody talk stupids things about you without to know you well, than it is indicated that person to find more about your personality....your comment(excepting the first part) is totally STUPID!You really don't know what you say but you hurry to make afirmations and comparation about her voice or her songs.FIRST STUDY ABOUT OTHERS!(she worked fantastic!!!)AND THAN WITH ARGUMENTS CAN COMMENT!Otherwise you can be influenced or to make grave mistakes!
@margot2001 that's right, she's not Edit Piaf, neither Jacques Brel, cause she's even greater than Edith and she made this song sound better than Jaques. This lady is Mireille Mathieu!
@pesonen205 I was about to think that maybe only some french could really understand what i meant (which is not important : it's only my opinion, isn't it ?), and then i found out : you're finnish ? I do love your country where i've been twice, once in the end of the summer years ago, and once in february in Lapland, this year. That was magic ! Can you speak french ? Anyway i don't want to argue with anyone : in french we say "les goûts et le couleurs ne se discutent pas".
@pesonen205 But i don't like her way of singing (should i say "shouting" ?). I cannot feel any feeling in this, only a powerful voice. OK, she's sold millions of CD's all around the world, and then ? what does it prove ?
@margot2001 It is important, what You meant. And the only version of this song is Brel`s.I`m an old fool .now sixty years old,but when I`m retiring I`m learning french and I`m going to read Victor Hugo`s Les Miserables in french.
@pesonen205 "Les Misérables" ? straight in the text ? Good luck man! French is a very beautiful but quite hard language. But i'm confident : those who want finally can ;-) And you've begun to learn listening to french music, didn't you ? So you'll be able to translate what i forgot to do in my first answer "les goûts et les couleurs ne se discutent pas : tastes and colours are not to be questionned = there's no accounting for taste !"
@pesonen205 Yes,as You know,I`m an old fool, but I am going to do it.Because it is the best written thing I have ever found.I only hope I have enough time to learn this most beautiful language ever.
@marcsamourai i don't know if Edtih Piaf did like this song or not ; and this is not the point. I just meant that to have a powerful voice is not enough in my opinion to make a good singer. Edith had a powerful voice, but not only : she was so intense in emotion, and very simple though. No show off. And she meant what she sang, just like Brel. But for that you need a bit of brain and a bit of heart... Sorry to be rude... :-)
This recording was not for Piaf, she never sung this song! All old recordings sounds in a very nostalgic manner for us today,It is about of other studio-recording with other tehnology. If they would sing today in a modern studio they would not sound so romantic (here seems to be of course a paradox)
How to compare this vocal interpretation with a version of verses intonation??!Mireille really managed a great job with this song that nobody who i lisened didn't try to cultive real vocal way of expression joined with a great sensibility. But if you prefer Maysa than lisen her...or lisen with many atention Mireille;in any case is not a competition!
Her interpretation in Russia is better...in compare with Brel are not terms for comparation at least musical talking ...she gives all the best musicity of the song!
I don´t like the way they translate the song... lyrics has not the exact meaning and that´s a little anoying when the poetry of a song is such a beauty...
I began listening to Mireille in 1959 up in Anchorage Alaska. I thought and still do she is one of my favorite singers. Simply a beautiful singer, with such power.
Islandjerry: What kind of bullshit are you talking about???? Mireille was born in 1946. She was discovered in 1965. You need to get your story straight !!!
I guess to appreciate this you'd have to go through a long time listening to French music. I'd try some Françoise Hardy, some Miléne Farmer... That's the same I'd suggest to Americans who think their weird versions of Bossa Nova are better than ours :-) "Take some time to listen to Brazilian music made by Brazilians before you judge".
Absolutely ! Not only that but she actually recorded a lot of songs from Piaf's repertoire. If you like this song, there's a brazilian singer who did a brilliant rendition of it. Her name is Maysa. She has passed away but you can find it here on youtube.
yeah, but when u try to sing french, the language took you to do such things too... I´m from argentina, and even when I´m latina, It´s REALLY hard to avoid the r rolls and to break your voice...
your right, but that changes the meaning... anyway I listened carefully to mayza Live version and I have found the place where she makes a mistake. I´m not sure about studio versions... Nina Simone does something funny too...
I have an mp3 version of "Ne me quittes pas" that says "Edith Piaf" and when I heard it I fell in love with the song... But after listening other songs of E. Piaf I realized it was not the same voice, so I started to look for the singer that I liked so much.
And now I found her! Is she! Mireille Mathieu!
Now I want to know more about her. In this song she's amazing, and also the arrangement for orchestra... Thanks once more!
This song is unbelievable, but this version is not the best, her voice is too pressed. The version of nina simone seems the most touching to me, she sings it in a way you feel her sorrow, it feels like you hear her crying...amazing! watch it!
Thank you, I watched it, Nina's voice is not even close to Mireille Mathieu's voice and performance, there is just no comparison for Mireille Mathieu, the best singer ever.
AGREED! on tour she brings her own 75 piece orchestra She is a travelling roadshow and was nearly killed in car impact early in her career.Drove all over Russia, Germany France etc
ok thanks great! That was the first i ever heard her actually. The instruments are most eery, almost that they were being played underwater ..that could be the sound quality ageing?Very melancolic and enchanting,.though.....For me she could go through more tears and emotional break down to really cut it,give more of her self.....mm not more ?All of herself with nothing spared....Thats probably why she never made it really big.
200 million records,40 yrs 2000 songs recorded is not small. Sound quality is often bad when it was made in the 70's. We get the videos and are grateful. They often come off old VCRs. This song drives French people to emotional excess. Mimi knows how to push your buttons. 400 videos here in Mimi Street.
Mireille Mathieu is called Mimi by her friends.Jim Witt and myself created Mimi Street 250 Mireille Mathieu Videos. Others have added. The Mimi search we call a street of shopfronts showcasing Mimi.We chase away rubbish uploads off Mimi street. For you.
I love Mimi and I know she brings natural opiate joy to millions- I know it happens to you. My privelege to raise the mood of a thousand people daily. My vids have a million views !
Your first comment on Youtube is negative.Thats a common behaviour for beginners. This lady makes men wet their pants. You dont have to say something controversial to get responses from others.
This "chicken" has been on 400 magazine covers. Regards Steve in Sydney
The english version is based on the music only. The english lyrics do not have the style, poetic level, force or sense of desperation that the original lyrics have.
Thank you!

Islandjerry 2 years ago 11
Islandjerry: What kind of bullshit are you talking about???? Mireille was born in 1946. She was discovered in 1965. You need to get your story straight !!!
SillyGrandpa 2 years ago
Gee I'll have to tell my dad that he came back from Paris with a fake tape he made of her. Damn you never can trust your fathers can you?
Perhaps discovered by you in 65 but well known before that.
Islandjerry 2 years ago
this song is amazing anyways...but Maysa's version is much better, very emotional...
BettinaFromBrazil 3 years ago 3
I guess to appreciate this you'd have to go through a long time listening to French music. I'd try some Françoise Hardy, some Miléne Farmer... That's the same I'd suggest to Americans who think their weird versions of Bossa Nova are better than ours :-) "Take some time to listen to Brazilian music made by Brazilians before you judge".

Mireille Mathieu is a Edith Piaf wannabe ...
christianpless 3 years ago
It seems that way, doesn't it? The way she rolls the "r"s and her outfits.
some1tookmynick 3 years ago
Absolutely ! Not only that but she actually recorded a lot of songs from Piaf's repertoire. If you like this song, there's a brazilian singer who did a brilliant rendition of it. Her name is Maysa. She has passed away but you can find it here on youtube.
christianpless 3 years ago
yeah, but when u try to sing french, the language took you to do such things too... I´m from argentina, and even when I´m latina, It´s REALLY hard to avoid the r rolls and to break your voice...
evacanela 2 years ago

Are you joking? Maysa does not even know the lyrics.

Hey, this woman mess up the lyrics too, listen carefully
evacanela 2 years ago
well, the song was written for a male singer, she justs adapts it for a woman. Listen carefully.
jeanpequignot80 2 years ago 2
your right, but that changes the meaning... anyway I listened carefully to mayza Live version and I have found the place where she makes a mistake. I´m not sure about studio versions... Nina Simone does something funny too...
evacanela 2 years ago
She looks more like she is giving an uplifting speech than singing a love lamet. Love it!

THAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANKS!!!!!!

The version of nina simone seems the most touching to me, she sings it in a way you feel her sorrow, it feels like you hear her crying...amazing! watch it!
amywineglas 3 years ago
Thank you, I watched it, Nina's voice is not even close to Mireille Mathieu's voice and performance, there is just no comparison for Mireille Mathieu, the best singer ever.
worldhealth 3 years ago
I agree this song is amazing, but the most touching version is by Maysa.

AGREED! on tour she brings her own 75 piece orchestra She is a travelling roadshow and was nearly killed in car impact early in her career.Drove all over Russia, Germany France etc
kimbo99 3 years ago
ok thanks great! That was the first i ever heard her actually. The instruments are most eery, almost that they were being played underwater ..that could be the sound quality ageing?Very melancolic and enchanting,.though.....For me she could go through more tears and emotional break down to really cut it,give more of her self.....mm not more ?All of herself with nothing spared....Thats probably why she never made it really big.
davestany 3 years ago
200 million records,40 yrs 2000 songs recorded is not small. Sound quality is often bad when it was made in the 70's. We get the videos and are grateful. They often come off old VCRs. This song drives French people to emotional excess. Mimi knows how to push your buttons. 400 videos here in Mimi Street.

The english version is based on the music only. The english lyrics do not have the style, poetic level, force or sense of desperation that the original lyrics have.
