This has nothing to do with volunteer or professional...this is simply a case of lack of training (that whole team didn't know what they were doing or one of 'em would have stopped the guy in front of him and instructed the next to also stop/exit the building) but the officer in charge should have been there with those guys. Either way it was good training...he'll never do that again.

Ok...for all the volunteer vs paid firefighter bullshit. I have been a volunteer firefighter for Columbus/Montana, Community/Texas, and Pecan Grove/Texas. I have also been a paid firefighter for Baytown/Texas and am currently a paid firefighter for another city in Southeast Texas. No, the training is not the same. The training for paid staff is of higher quality, controlled, with great regards to safety. The training for volunteers was rather unorganized, unsafe and mediocre at its best.

Probably 80% of firemen don't know this but you don't turn a hose on a guy who is wearing superheated bunker gear. Guy gets worse burns cause the water compresses the air barrier inside the suit and thus worse burns.
@MESSier1188 I did see what happened in Brooklyn. However if you spray a guy with a hose with superheated gear, even when it's not on fire, it may just be smoking a little, it WILL give worse burns than if you remove the gear carefully. There should be another guy around with gear and gloves on to remove the other guys gear. There is a video that shows how to remove superheated gear properly. PM me and I'll send it to you.

... a case of bad-timing- to say the least. One may gripe from this viewed angle- However, from the firemens' view the scene is entirely different. Rehersed or not- shit happens! @ .02 a puff of dark-black smoke indicates the ignition of an another type of fuel to this fire- Probably unburnt accelerant used to start the fire. There was not any heavy brown/grey smoke to indicate a flashover was imminent as the lead man opened the door. Mistake- He went right in as unignited fuel and fumes flared.
Lack of experience :o Hong Kong firefighters are one of the best , they are very disciplined and they have to work alot harder because of the bigger buildings and the more peoples they have to save

I've seen this video a few times in my surfing through youtube. I found it again now when viewing videos on flashover. But this time, I had to watch it several times; to fully understand what was going on. What were they thinking? The "entry team" crawled into a fully involved structure with what appeared to be a charged, but closed hoseline. Even a basic firefighter training certification teaches that fire retardant is not the same as fire-proof. why didn't those who knew better stop it sooner?

Let me guess they were probably volunteers with no formal training, afterall the one guy who came over has jeans on instead of bunker gear. I can only hope there burns were not too servere and they learned a real lesson about fire.

Then they are putting so much trust in their equipment and the instructors that they have ruled out all rationale. If u ask me its the instructors who are the idiots. They are only as good as leadership.

@slim404 Sorry but if my team leader commanded me to enter that i whoud had said NO, that was his own decition..... the leader commands but the final chooice is yours, and if he was smart enougth he cud see the gasses from the fire was burning. and i dondt evan think any leader whoud command any intow that fire....

...Fire fighters with very little training. Fire fighting basics, if you open a door and the room is fully involved, there's no way anyone would survive so why the fuck would you go in, let alone for a demo? I'd be amazed if they escaped with less than 50% full thickness burns.

A dog with a hammer up its ass could tell that there was no way in hell any fire fighter, no matter what sort of hose or water supply they had, should have gone anywhere near that door. Forget the "dark black smoke!" the flames pissing out of the door crack, and every other available crack, are not accelerant, their called Auto-ignition, cause when the super heated fire gasses hit the air they ignite. Probably vouenteer....

... a case of bad-timing- to say the least. One may gripe from this viewed angle- However, from the firemens' view the scene is entirely different. Rehersed or not- shit happens! @ .02 a puff of dark-black smoke indicates the ignition of an another type of fuel to this fire- Probably unburnt accelerant used to start the fire. There was not any heavy brown/grey smoke to indicate a flashover was imminent as the lead man opened the door. Mistake- He went right in as unignited fuel and fumes flared.

I'm a Captain in the forth largest FD in the nation. I.d write that idit up for being stupid. He was trying to put on a show for the croud and it almost cost him his life. The thin plastic face peace can't take direct flame inpingement. If it would have failed his respatory track would have been burned instantly

I've seen this video a few times in my surfing through youtube. I found it again now when viewing videos on flashover. But this time, I had to watch it several times; to fully understand what was going on. What were they thinking? The "entry team" crawled into a fully involved structure with what appeared to be a charged, but closed hoseline. Even a basic firefighter training certification teaches that fire retardant is not the same as fire-proof. why didn't those who knew better stop it sooner?

I dont think any of those guys had any training what so ever. If they did they would have done a propper size up, realized that it wasnt safe to enter the structure, and done an indirect attack from outside the structure instead of going inside and sitting like a bunch of dumb asses

Someone who can't respect fire should never be a firefighter - that is a fully developed fire he's gone into there - so irresponsible - the fire gases have already ignited and flashed over so why would you go into a compartment like that? And I admit this little stunt that these guys done is complete stupidity. There was a croud and they thought they could be hotshots an impress the crowd well it come back to burn them in the ass, any true firefighter with some sense would have not done that even with the crowd there. If it were me I have not even went in with it having already flashed over but you get a couple in EVERY dept who thinks they are badass and can take on the fire and win. This is for swflfirefighter. You must be a paid firefighter cause thats what a majority of paid guys think about volunteers, that we are all total dumb sob's. Well thats not true for the most part. Yes they are some dumbass volunteers but for the part as a whole we're not! Most of us go through the same state fire schools as paid people do with the same amount of training and for some more than paid people. And to tell you the truth they are alot of dumbass paid guys who think just like you!

Let me guess they were probably volunteers with no formal training, afterall the one guy who came over has jeans on instead of bunker gear. On a training scene of an organized dept you do not enter the training area unless you are in full gear. That was absolutely stupid of those two to crawl into a wall of fire. I can only hope there burns were not too servere and they learned a real lesson about fire.
