Ocean Beach is a world class beach break when its on (as seen here). It is also a world class hazardous spot for getting caught inside, having a long shore current as fast as you can paddle, and getting ice cream headaches. It is a damn good place to see a great white too but honestly when you're out there it is the last thing on your mind.
Oh, my God, the ASP is trying to make more money!! Can you believe this? What should they be doing? Feeding the starving kids of Mozambique? They're a sporting organization, not a charity organization. If you don't support them, fine. But for crying out loud, quit your whining. They want to make more money--so freakin' what! To all the whiners: do us a favor and go away ...
I'm not sure the ASP's intentions are pure with bringing surf contests to major cities and questionable locales like New York and San Francisco. Rather than exposing the sport of surfing to new and more people, aren't they just trying to make more money?
Im coming in july to SF and want to surf (not big waves), is this beach safe (sharks, currents...) when the waves are like 4 or max 6 feet? Will i need neoprene?
@epuig you need a 4 3 or 5 4 wetsuit year around. wave size has no effect on sharks, they will always be there. currents are dependent on swell direction, wind and size of the waves.
@epuig July will probably not be too big - it will most likely be between 3 and 6 feet any given day that month. If it gets too big, head to Linda Mar (10-15 mins south). The biggest problem is avoiding the wind - surf in the early morning and late evening if it's sunny, if it's foggy it will be semi-choppy all day. Montara and Gray Whale Cove 20 mins south handle wind better than OB and are usually a foot or two bigger. 4/3 wetsuit is fine, sharks are all hype.
Great swell to start the year with an excellent way! plenty of perfect waves. In California no doubt are the best waves in the world. The music of this video is totally awesome!
There have been sightings and possibly attacks, but it's not really that sharky compared to many surrounding spots...
