Usually, when I see a poorly rated video, I stick around long enough to see why so many people didn't like it and then give it a rating of my own opinion of it, concurring or dissenting. So I guess you're right in the sense that the ratings don't necessarily affect my actions on YouTube. Unless I want to listen to a song; then I try to get the highest rated one because it usually means the best sound quality.
When I first saw that this video had mostly thumbs downs, I thought you were going to say something really offensive or just idiotic that a lot of people wouldn't like, and I kept watching just to see what it would be. Haha. :-P
But then because I stuck around for the video that long, I learned why it had so many thumbs down.

The most annoying thing about the entire thumbs up thumbs down thing:
You see those comments saying things like: "50 people thought this was this, hence the thumbs down". And things like that. It is the cancer of Youtube.
The liking and thumbs are often misinterpreted. If a video gets a lot of thumbs up, it will become more popular. For example-if one of your videos gets 10 thumbs up, it will show up on a search before a video with 3 thumbs up. The opposite for thumbs down. This will then get the video more views. The thumbs aren't for the viewers they are for the person who uploaded the video.
I think the thumbs up/down system does have an effect on the recomendations you get... also, for those channels that consistently get hits in the hundreds of thousands or even millions, it might have an impact on the revenue they get from advertising.
I rate videos Up or Down depending on whether or not I want others to also see the video. The ratings are used for categorizing, for when a user is browsing videos. It was never meant to be for the user's assessment of the video.
This is a nice test. I personally had the what the!?, moment because the 6,000 thumbs down. But I still watched all the video. I think people will watch subscription videos despite the score.
Best way to get round this problem is to go to the top left of the youtube page to where your username is and click on it, then go to subscriptions. This will display ALL your subscribed videos from newest at the top to oldest at the bottom. Also it gets rid of the video once you watched it so it doesn't go to cluttered. It's what I do. It's what I did to find this video even.
Actually I saw how many thumbs down and it made me wanna watch the video more, LOL! Thought you were gonna do something crazy like say you were gonna review knit sweaters or something.
Well, when you Like a video, it appears in your recent activity box and I think it stores all the vids you like in some sort of playlist or something so you can go back and watch them. Maybe that's not the case anymore, but that can be another purpose to it. Plus, people like to rate stuff. Not usually a factor if you like the video, but if you don't like the vid, the person, whatever.
Think of the trolls. How could they live without their thumbs down button? btw, thumbed it down for ya.
I definitely appreciate the system, it let's you know before hand if the video is worth your time to view, or if it's just a complete mess, I only watched this video because I knew something was up seeing as everything you do usually gets a 90% approval rating
I gave you a thumbs down ^^ But actually, I sometimes do watch that up/down amount. It's pretty convenient for when you're looking at a how-to or something. Some people like to fool the people that don't know anything of a subject yet, and they can make them do a lot of harm to their computers, at that point it's convenient to look at the amount of thumbs up/down before you actually start doing what the one in the video is doing.
The thumbs up/down stats don't affect whether I watch a video or not after I've opened it. But, my account is set up so that the videos that my subscriptions "Like" will show up on my homepage. It's kind of a way to expose the video to more people and such. Unless of course you have too many subs and it clutters your homepage so you turn that setting off. I've actually found some really nice youtubers and videos this way.
This video has too many thumbs downs for me, I refuse to watch the rest of it. I personally disapprove of any video with more than 5,000 thumbs down.

I usually don't rate but......thumbs down. However, when I see tons of thumbs down I expect a dumb video and usually it only takes a few seconds to figure that out anyways without the ratings.
I noticed how the sub box thing was making miss RoscoBa's new videos a few months ago. It is really annoying. Now I go and check people I like everyonce in awhile to see what I missed. You can also just check your subscriptions, and select that channel and all the new videos will show up. Even the ones that didn't make it in the sub box.
i like thumbs up and thumbs down for example it tells me how many metal loving f*** heads hate him (such as me). so far 2 times as much people hate him than like him which makes me happy XD

For example-if one of your videos gets 10 thumbs up, it will show up on a search before a video with 3 thumbs up. The opposite for thumbs down. This will then get the video more views. The thumbs aren't for the viewers they are for the person who uploaded the video.

I think the thumbs up/down system does have an effect on the recomendations you get... also, for those channels that consistently get hits in the hundreds of thousands or even millions, it might have an impact on the revenue they get from advertising.

I rate videos Up or Down depending on whether or not I want others to also see the video. The ratings are used for categorizing, for when a user is browsing videos. It was never meant to be for the user's assessment of the video.

Best way to get round this problem is to go to the top left of the youtube page to where your username is and click on it, then go to subscriptions. This will display ALL your subscribed videos from newest at the top to oldest at the bottom. Also it gets rid of the video once you watched it so it doesn't go to cluttered. It's what I do. It's what I did to find this video even.

Well, when you Like a video, it appears in your recent activity box and I think it stores all the vids you like in some sort of playlist or something so you can go back and watch them. Maybe that's not the case anymore, but that can be another purpose to it. Plus, people like to rate stuff. Not usually a factor if you like the video, but if you don't like the vid, the person, whatever.
Think of the trolls. How could they live without their thumbs down button? btw, thumbed it down for ya.

I definitely appreciate the system, it let's you know before hand if the video is worth your time to view, or if it's just a complete mess, I only watched this video because I knew something was up seeing as everything you do usually gets a 90% approval rating

I gave you a thumbs down ^^ But actually, I sometimes do watch that up/down amount. It's pretty convenient for when you're looking at a how-to or something. Some people like to fool the people that don't know anything of a subject yet, and they can make them do a lot of harm to their computers, at that point it's convenient to look at the amount of thumbs up/down before you actually start doing what the one in the video is doing.

The thumbs up/down stats don't affect whether I watch a video or not after I've opened it. But, my account is set up so that the videos that my subscriptions "Like" will show up on my homepage. It's kind of a way to expose the video to more people and such. Unless of course you have too many subs and it clutters your homepage so you turn that setting off. I've actually found some really nice youtubers and videos this way.

I usually don't rate but......thumbs down. However, when I see tons of thumbs down I expect a dumb video and usually it only takes a few seconds to figure that out anyways without the ratings.

I noticed how the sub box thing was making miss RoscoBa's new videos a few months ago. It is really annoying. Now I go and check people I like everyonce in awhile to see what I missed. You can also just check your subscriptions, and select that channel and all the new videos will show up. Even the ones that didn't make it in the sub box.
