The six million comes from a spelling error in an old Torah where in a passage about that the Israelites (not the jews) one day will return. The letter V is missing. It has the numerical value of 6. So the extreme superstitious people read that the Israelites would return minus the V or 6. The burnt offering their god demanded. The holocaust wasn't the first 6. Jewish history is full of jews getting murdered in 600, 6000, 60.0000 etc. numbers. They wanted that prophecy fulfilled so bad.

I will look into this further. I figured it was something like this, based on Jewish mysticism. Essentially the warmongering Jews had to convince the orthodox to go along with the story. They needed this emotional/religious anchor to get the thing going.
