This is one of my all time favorite movie endings. The dark, bitterly funny use of the song "Happy Heart," the ruthlessness of the story's moral, the symbolic use of the newspaper in place of the money and the blood soaking into the money under the floorboards, the unsettling way Alex smiles at the end (possibly because he may be able to get off the hook with take the cash with him), and David's haunting, dead expression and vioceover. It's nasty and ugly yet poetically beautiful.
I love this film, rate this higher than trainspotting! i love directors accelerated openings to both films so u get to know so much about the characters so quickley so u can get on with the film! U can tell its a channel 4 film by the soundtrack. Very much like the series "killer net"! gotta love early 90's mcgregor! Classic!!!
The inspiration for this film is Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales'. In 'The Pardoner's Tale', three brothers go 'looking for Death'. They are told of a mystical treasure which they decide to split three ways. Two stay to guard the treasure while the youngest is sent to find food. While he's gone, the two decide to murder him and thus get more money. They do so, not knowing that the youngest had the same idea and die also from the poisoned food he brought. The three brothers did indeed 'find death'.
Alex wins because he is the most reasonable one, and smartest, too. I love how Alex at first tried to convinced Juliet to let David go so that they could have the money together.
I love how the film initially sets itself up to follow through with that flash forward of them being killed by the mob but ends differently. Like the characters the audience are so worried about what's coming after them that they don't even notice the real threat. Saw it for the first time today, fuck this movie scared me.
@Amitai45 This has to be one of my fave films of all time, yet if you mention it hardly anyone knows it. Its really good to know that people are still discovering it and appreciating it!
Is it me or is it funny how Danny Boyle's first two fiilms end with the lead character Ewan McGregor tricking his friends and ending up getting all the money for himself.
this is such an amazing movie. i love it when alex (ewan) says to juliet "let him go" as david tries to walk through the door with the bag. i mean, she didn't do what he said and she got fucked. btw, alex couldn't even trust her, so that way everything ended up SO right for him.
That knife seems suspiciously longer once its actually in his body, going through his shoulder and the floor, coming out the other side with a couple of inches to spare, and it's not even all the way in, there are still about 4 inches on the top showing. Also, since we normally only hear a couple of gasps and then the person dies, Ewan's gasps are even creepier cause they go on and on...and they sound just like the dying person gasps and grunts.
Who needs guns, look at all the hell you can make with knives. Why did the police come to his house anyway? How would they know to come there. Wouldn't it be so much creepier and add to the Horror story if he was just left there to die a slow, painful death? Not to sound like a creep, that just seems more realistic to me.
I cannot even imagine how much that must hurt. I like how he didn't go with the clique of screaming his head off. It makes it so much more believable that he is so much pain that he can't even scream. And even more so when Juliet rams it in further. Gosh, gives me the shivers. Can he move either of his arms?
The moral of the story is that if you and your friends stumble across a suitcase full of money split it and take off. Otherwise you may end up killing each other
"U paid 500 pounds..that's what you paid for it, we have no idea how much it cost us...for u two to have a good time, we have no idea the cost of that yet..." (paraphrasing) Eccleston told me that exchange was all improv & turned out to be one of the most powerful parts of the film. The point is that the end shows "the cost" for each character's behavior. David died, Juliet's a fugitive & Alex suffers a severe injury..that's his COST, a daily reminder of what greed can do to the human spirit.
i like you Mouse! I guess we'll never know for sure...lol perhaps the paramedics got lucky when they took the knife out of Alex's arm...this is truly a classic film, especially since after all these years, it still spurs controversy..what I really loved was the detective's outgoing message on his voicemail...",,,but the final choice is yours, alone."
TBH, I thought by the end they were all as bad as each other, though I was impressed at EM & DB's talent at getting us to sympathise with Alex, because by the end, I think he retained the biggest shred of his humanity through his creativity and imagination. And who knows: with the ending of the film as it is, he might just be able to find redemption for his sins.
Ewan McGregor is NOT dead. I can understand why people would assume that, as that plotline has been quite popular in recent films. The reason for the paramedics and Police to be standing around is called the European sense of dry humor. The Head detective is a wry character...it's comedic relief. This is a great film! The reason Alex (McGregor) "wins" the game is because he had imagination. Juliet was a doctor and David an accountant. The dreamer wins in the end.
After re watching this scene it seems to me that Alex did die. You must take into account that the knife pierced a vital artery and it is very likely that he bled out before the police returned (which could have been days).
Also, the fact that the coroner was taking pictures seems to suggest that he infact was a corpse, and no paramedics were treating him.
Lastly, you will notice that the inspector does not respond to Alex's greeting, which he wouldn't have if Alex was in fact dead.
Once again with all due respect...Alex is NOT dead...I happen to have worked on this film in post production and remember specifically, having a very interesting conversation with Christopher Eccleston...if u remember earlier in the film...David comes home to find Alex & Juliet celebrating with a video camera & drinks...he asks, "how much did you pay for this?" Finally after prodding, Juliet yells, "500 pounds!" David replies...
Alex was obviously alive, the evidence for that its quite obvious. It could of pierced a vital artery yet we do not actually know that. Plus I'm not entirely sure how long it would of taken them to find him but i think it was the next morning because he was phoning the detectives office earlier and did not put the phone down. The detective would of hear the argument, the fight, etc.
Plus a reporter was taking photos of him, and he even squints reacts at the flashes of it.
The fact that he squinted means nothing. If the director meant Alex to be a 'ghost' at the end then it is expected that he would have human characteristics such as squinting or fidgeting.
Also, his axillary artery was most definitely pierced. He would have bled out in less than 30 minutes.
When did the director mean to have Alex as a ghost? Plus his squinting is a reaction. Now im not sure how a ghost should be exactly portrayed as there are many forms of them in different movies, but i really couldn't possibly think alex is one.
Plus the knife still 'could of' and even if it did, the knife was there to stop the bloodflow as it covers the wound. If he would of taken it out n it did split the artery then he would of bled to death but the knife held it
Are you serious? Have you any idea how the circulation system works? Having the knife embedded in the artery will not staunch the flow. All the knife is doing is preventing the wound from healing by making it impossible for the blood to clot.
Advice given today is that if you are stabbed, the knife might of cut or disrupted a artery. the best course of action is not to take the blade out otherwise the wound would be exposed and blood could come spewing out and you would eventually die of blood loss(if it was an artery). Now the reason why you keep the blade in is because it is covering the wound exactly because it created it at the time.
You don't need medical training is bloody common sense. The knife in the created wound can give pressure as if it was somebody putting pressure on the wound if it were open.
Unfortunately, I cannot draw diagram on youtube so I can't demonstrate what is wrong with that statement. Next time you're with a doctor, ask him and they will explain it.
I think he actually is dead. Him laughing at the end is symbolic that although the two have killed him and one of them got away he still gets the last laugh because he had hidden the money all along .
he is u idiot he was laughing cause he beat them he only got stabbed in the shoulder if he was dying there would b paramedics there not polce and they would b keeping him alive christ ur stupid lol
Idiot? Moi? Get your facts straight fuck face. You can clearly see two paramedics standing doing nothing cleverly shot with the handle of the knife in front of them. Why would paramedics stand around doing nothing with a guy pinned to the floor by a knife if he was alive? Why would a photographer be taking photographs? They take photographs of corpses. He is clearly meant to be dead. It's called artistic license that he is shown to be alive. Christ you are a fucking retarded cunt.
So instead of helping him out, they leave him there. Wow. Jesus christ man, a stab to the shoulder is still a serious thing. That could sever an artery, and it probably did. The guy is dead, the only reason he's still talking and laughing is for cinematic effect. It's like a ghost appearing as the scene of his murder, say hello, laugh at the other because in the end he won...
@MasherAtolla It ain't a mole, it's a wound from when Christopher Eccleston's character slowly put a drill to his fore-head while sort of interrogating him about the police visit.
i definately think its intended to be ambiguous as to whether alex lives or dies, first time i saw it i thought he lives, but now, the fact that the medics are chit chatting and the guy is taking photographs makes me think he's definately dead. BUT alex reacts to the flashes and speaks outloud and the film hasnt had any surreal moments up until now, so nothing would imply a stylistic clue that it was just him "imagining" what he would be doing if he had lived etc. verdict: probably dead
If you see in the end there is only one body in the morgue of Christopher Eccleston and there is 3 ''beds''... and the other 2 are empty, so i believe from what i see and the smile in his face that Ewan got the money, he is still alive and out of jail. Kerry Fox took the blame of the murders (she killed Christopher and then escaped to Rio, her fingerprint in the knife)
Also, (you have all got me thinking now!) if he was stabbed in the heart he would be leaking a lot darker colour blood than that and he would not have been in so much pain (because he would have died by the time she got to him).
I suppose they could have waiting for an aneasthatist (excuse the spelling) to numb him to be removed. All makes sense apart from the photographer and the lack of urgency.
Maybe like you said, its supposed to be ambiguous.
I must disagree with one comment saying that Eccleston was innocent. Innocent of what?
I always thought Ewan was dead.
One thing about this movie (that makes it very similar to Pulp Fiction) is that when I first saw it I was completely transfixed and blown away by the ending. I raved about it and watched it a couple of weeks later with my mate and was bored by it. Like Pulp Fiction I think it is really a one-watch movie.
i always thought it was implied he lives. i agree its, ambiguous but after the first viewing, i never had a doubt. his laughing and then showing the money shows what he was likely laughing at (the police didnt know he had the money) and he knows what was in the suitcase. so the laughing would indicate he was alive. i dunno. im a film student, so im reading it from a narrativity PoV. also, the knife wasnt near his heart-it was in the dip below the shoulder.
and thats why u hear his voice narrate the ending? cause hes dead? lol, no he survives they just didnt bother showing it using his laughter as in the end, the one pinned to the ground gets up and walks away with the prize, if u dont know danny's work, then i can understand ur confusion, but alex lives, im just not to sure he gets the money soon after though because it would become a crime scene in reality that is, but he survives or he woulda been dead by the time they meds got there.
yes he gets the money that was the point of the ending hes fucked them all over and he got away with it
she ends up as the killer in the eyes of the press the other room mate is a victom and he is the one that survived the attack im sorry for not using the charecters names i just dont remember them im not good with names
Eccleston is such a great actor.

He actually asked.... "If you cant trust your friends, (which you cant) then 'What Then?'...what the?!"
He was the hero of this story, the protector of his friends but greed got the better of them and him as a result.
As for Alex being dead, alive, alive, dead? There's a difference you know and its easy to spot?

If I recall correctly, that isn't a mole. It's an injury Ewan's character got earlier in the film.
BattyKellen 2 years ago 21
@BattyKellen Correct - Christopher Eccleston was about to drill his head open, but just lightly touched upon it with the drill "You looking for me?"
thespoon94 1 year ago
@BattyKellen the middle of his head?? yeah, from a powered screw driver..
mysticwryter 1 year ago
@BattyKellen yes i was, i happened when David (Christopher Ec) nearly put drill through his head.
TheDucksOfRubber 1 year ago
@BattyKellen Yup. Almost had a drill shoved into his forehead. Bloody brilliant movie.
Boomaboomboomboom 5 months ago
@MasherAtolla It ain't a mole, it's a wound from when Christopher Eccleston's character slowly put a drill to his fore-head while sort of interrogating him about the police visit.
Roberto5712 2 years ago
@Roberto5712 - Thanks, I remember the scene now. I should sit through it from start to finish again.

i definately think its intended to be ambiguous as to whether alex lives or dies, first time i saw it i thought he lives, but now, the fact that the medics are chit chatting and the guy is taking photographs makes me think he's definately dead. BUT alex reacts to the flashes and speaks outloud and the film hasnt had any surreal moments up until now, so nothing would imply a stylistic clue that it was just him "imagining" what he would be doing if he had lived etc. verdict: probably dead

I love Ewan McGregor and I love this movie, amazing ending!!
thnx 4 posting!!
MrsDeppMcGregorBloom 3 years ago
If you see in the end there is only one body in the morgue of Christopher Eccleston and there is 3 ''beds''... and the other 2 are empty, so i believe from what i see and the smile in his face that Ewan got the money, he is still alive and out of jail. Kerry Fox took the blame of the murders (she killed Christopher and then escaped to Rio, her fingerprint in the knife)
kostasishere0 3 years ago 2
Also, (you have all got me thinking now!) if he was stabbed in the heart he would be leaking a lot darker colour blood than that and he would not have been in so much pain (because he would have died by the time she got to him).
I suppose they could have waiting for an aneasthatist (excuse the spelling) to numb him to be removed. All makes sense apart from the photographer and the lack of urgency.
Maybe like you said, its supposed to be ambiguous.
guyboxerdog 3 years ago
I must disagree with one comment saying that Eccleston was innocent. Innocent of what?
I always thought Ewan was dead.
One thing about this movie (that makes it very similar to Pulp Fiction) is that when I first saw it I was completely transfixed and blown away by the ending. I raved about it and watched it a couple of weeks later with my mate and was bored by it. Like Pulp Fiction I think it is really a one-watch movie.
Still fucking brilliant though.
What an ending with Julliette in hysterics

I dont think Alex was necessarily fatally wounded as the knife wound was closer to his side than directly in his heart thinks its inconclusive
shellspacebabe 3 years ago
i always thought it was implied he lives. i agree its, ambiguous but after the first viewing, i never had a doubt. his laughing and then showing the money shows what he was likely laughing at (the police didnt know he had the money) and he knows what was in the suitcase. so the laughing would indicate he was alive. i dunno. im a film student, so im reading it from a narrativity PoV. also, the knife wasnt near his heart-it was in the dip below the shoulder.
4jonah 3 years ago
correction: when i said his laughing shows hes alive, that was stupid. i meant to say that it would show that he will live/be fine.

I thought the first time that Alex didn't really die but now I am convinced he is dead.
LordZeratul86 3 years ago
okay and how is he dead?
ppineo 3 years ago
when he got stabbed he was fatally wounded and couldn't get help because Juliette reinforced the stabbing.
LordZeratul86 3 years ago
and thats why u hear his voice narrate the ending? cause hes dead? lol, no he survives they just didnt bother showing it using his laughter as in the end, the one pinned to the ground gets up and walks away with the prize, if u dont know danny's work, then i can understand ur confusion, but alex lives, im just not to sure he gets the money soon after though because it would become a crime scene in reality that is, but he survives or he woulda been dead by the time they meds got there.
GoodLifeGoodLove 2 years ago
yes he gets the money that was the point of the ending hes fucked them all over and he got away with it
she ends up as the killer in the eyes of the press the other room mate is a victom and he is the one that survived the attack im sorry for not using the charecters names i just dont remember them im not good with names
