  • The groove that starts at 0:56 is one of the tightest I've ever heard, too bad the gospel drummer in him takes over and messes it all up after ten seconds...

  • Why does he hold his stick wierd?

  • That Is Chris Brown Drummer...

  • Dope, fresh, funky, bangin beats!!!

  • 0:26 straight up fresh prince

  • Caralhooooo que isso man!!! Olha o Bumbo desse cara!!! Isso é ocisa de doente, não é possível... hahaha... toca muito!!!

    It's amazing!!!

  • my prostate loves this song

  • why no video responses

  • :55 "yeeeaaaah"

  • great vid but not the best sounding toms

  • double pedal is for fags!! who needs them ha ??

  • @luiscurtolo fags is a bit offensive man. I mean I don't use one, but if you wanted to play metal you'd need one - each to their own you know.

  • @specialness16 hahaha i know about the metal... i was just kidding... but there are people who use a double kick to do stuff you could do with one...

but its like, a personal choice.

  • @luiscurtolo yeah, I would only really use one for Metal, and i don't play Metal really :P it's just not what I'm interested in, I like the Gospel stuff

  • Gerald Haywards right foot is freakin bionic! For Gerald to get a double pedal would be a total waste of time!

  • SILLY GOOD

  • wat was tht lasst lick he did were those triplets or wat?

  • Gerald Heyward, is good. Would like to see him do tradional gospel.

  • @badsonofagun1 then look for some old albums of Hezekiah Walker or James Hall. He was all over them.

  • are those triplets on the bass drum?!?!?

  • Ya nice ''gospel'' language bad motha@#%^$ must be proud of this ''Christian'' if thats what his wallet read

  • @rufuscoss ...

  • topdrummers cool

  • He is my idol!

  • How do you do that snare hi hat combination with one hand in the beginning? Any videos or what not? Thanks.

  • @vrdrums i think theres a benny greb video on it somehwere on youtube

  • @jakripr Benny calls it the "ghost note for free"

  • Boy Yes!!!

  • yeah! :D 0:54

  • Comment removed

  • he have shorts hand....

  • nice :)

  • creepy when he looks straight into the camera. lol

  • Uhmm folks:Hes playing DOUBLES with one foot(Using the slide technique which is why they are very even). The note groupings(BTW 'triplet' is a group of notes evenly space in the span of playing a double depending on the tempo and time) your hearing are all groups of 'four' not 'three'. . They are basic gospel chop style fills, his foot is just very clean and even so they sound very fast(Hes not actually trying very hard).

  • them triplets he is playing with one foot most doublebass drummers cant do that with out the double bass pedal

  • the first 18 seconds was mind blowing thas what i call deep pocket play

  • he makes the most ugliest faces lmao but he has my respect.

  • 0:56 '' Yeaaa ''

  • His Fills are so clean through out.

  • @metropofreak

    single pedal, slide technique.

  • funny way to hold a drumstick... lol

  • It's so he hits both the snare and hats at the same time...just to let u know

  • @marc777danielle

it's because they grew up in black churches that heavily use those "gospel" songs, you know what? they are influenced by jazz musicians too, yet they develop their own groove.

and btw, John McLaughlin is a guitarist.

  • @marc777danielle

those are from different music styles and genres!!!

  • @epasurr

    and Marvin McQuitty :P

  • i'm a hardcore atheist and i play licks very similair to this......

  • Does he use a double pedal? he is friggin insane!

  • No double pedal. He's been doing this since his gospel days in the early 90s. He has a wallet that say "bad mothafucka" on it.

  • I seen Gerald killin the Chris Brown tour at the Electric Factory. Thanks for the tix Brian.

  • I just love him so much...he really the no 1 r&b and hip hop drummer.

  • I can tell you,I'm white! I've been playing drums since I was about 5.I love all music, but as I matured,in life and in music! I've realized that 90% of today's legends are black drummers! Why? Mainly because all of them, grew up in church! nows thats where its at! Man! we get our passion for it from church...2&4 baby....its all the plus.Aaron Spears,Royster,Heyward,Chambers,Lester Estelle jr,Beauford.....Gods in music. And they all play every style, and have mastered it.The truth speaks for itself

  • amen! I am budist and I agree with you.

  • Yeah Man! I'm a christian! but its a Fact! Thats its our beliefs systems that drive us to become better! These drummers are proof, these guys got pure heart and love...man! Anyone can see this!

Dw has a Dvd called "Kick Hat Snare" its about these drummers and what makes them Amazing its their beliefs and influences like you said.

  • i'm a christian also and ones belief system has nothing 2 do with striving to be the best. passion for ones craft does.

  • No you're Wrong.Because If you see their style and technique,music...they play with..you can see their based off out passion for their beliefs. They play Gosepel Music,Gospel hails from the churchs and the streets. Its passion what drives these people!...to be the best. And they always bring it back to their beliefs...Bro one's belief system has everything to do with what A person does....personal,professional...etc!

  • dude your crazy or crazy young and naive. striving for excellence trancends religious beliefs. so,..........you're saying that because someone is'nt a christian then they lack the desire to strive for excellence on their respective insrument? religious belief have nothing to do with the will to be the best. what about cats like trilok gurtu(hindu) or akira jimbo( shintoism) or john mclaughlin(hinduism) or zakir hussain(muslim) or the late freddy mercury(zoastrian). gospel drummers aint the best.

  • and the funny thing is that you're so into the pop drummers that you probably don't even know who the drummers are in the list i just named. heres a hint. if you really wanna be great then stop using religion as an excuse to not strive to be your best("oh, they're black christian drummers so thats why they're so good"). just ask dave elitch(jewish by birth but a self professing agnostic)

  • I didn't say just christian! You idiot....but check this? what are they playing? hip/hop,R&B..etc...not everyone's beliefs effect their playing! but These "Cats" do....

I never said being a christian, makes you a goof drummer! If you misunderstood that much? Wow!....And Their is no best, every drummer has their own unique style, technique and approach to music/drumming.

What's funny is...you went way off! I'm talking just about "these" drummers! Ask them....

  • now ....iether you don't realize what you're saying or you don't know that your contradicting yourself. i don't need to know you i know people like you who are severely missinformed about what they're talking about.

  • Don't come at me like you know me...alright!

acting all smarter than everyone else....you misunderstood my statement...and these drummers in particular.

I respect all styles of music.drumming and all drummers....

    Are we clear?

  • go read a book or something.............

  • I think the best drummers today are hip-hop drummers

  • black drummers I should say.

    their groove is so different.

  • don't say "black"!

say: "that ones tan have afro-american and hip-hop influences!" those are the best ones! don't you think? do you like aron spears? the living young legend: tony royster?

or from other styles: look at denis chambers grooves! and (for me) the king: Carter Beauford!!!

  • I didn't mean to be racial.

tony is awesome. thanks to dennis chambers.

  • I know. But their groove comes from their influences.

  • Amen

  • nah, what about gospel drummers? what about jazz drummers?

  • latin jazz: horacio "el negro" hernandez

  • or Brian Blade

  • i finally figured out how to do the ECHO which is played starting at :36 there quick doubles while grooving hes calls it the ECHO something his friend taught him

  • Chris Dave made the Echo

  • They all different Styles...etc! why would you compare them?

  • Just Black? Check out Andy Fisenden, He's White, similar style, much younger and just as good. Im not sure if skin colour has much to do with it compared to what your influence was growng up.

  • I honestly think that influence is the greatest factor... so definitely have to I agree with you on this one. It's all based on the your environment (what you hear, what kind of folks you know, the music commonly heard in your environment). All the factors contribute to the end product.

  • holy crap!

  • Thats his speed!!!!

  • that second beat reminds me of the "fresh prince of belair" theme song for sum reason. wat a beast.

  • he's doin triplets with one foot, not doubles.

  • technique for doing that???

    AWESOME XD

    =-OOOOO

  • the way i do it is playing heel up. jsut practice everyday. start off slow with control and gradually speed up

  • @djq202 yes the DOUBLES he's playing with his foot do make 32nd note triplets.

triplets refers to time, doubles refers to stroke patterns anything thats two in a row before another limb plays something is a double.

  • @djq202 I'm only hearing two notes with the bass drum,

  • dang man

  • great drummers always big and black people..Dennis, Aaron spears, this guy..lol I love these guys..

  • or small and black aka Tony Royster jr

  • JUST BLACK

  • great drumming. i get the impression hes a douchbag in real life

  • Yeah probably.

  • Ive met Gerald and he is def not a douchbag, he is one of the most humblest people ull ever meet, he gave me so much information and really just encouraged me to be the best i can be, he is amazing at drumming and life

  • lmao

  • Wow :O

  • every thing is so clean ...do you hear his foot

  • he's jus sooooo klean!!

  • Gerald doesn't use double pedals

  • Not on this video, it's just one pedal, difficult but true.. and he doesn't open the hit-hat when it's fast.. You can learn that in the jazz (:

  • WOAH! I can only dream of drumming like this guy

  • ginger baker is cool.

  • hahaha! dude in the beginning i swear i thought his right arm was lik prosthetic or something!

  • hit technique is tight but the only thing that makes it sound crazy is the double pedals i knw.. i use p122's

  • You!!!! must not be a drummer because if you were you would know that he is u'sing a singal pedal and doing it with 1 foot that's what makes him da shit that's how I leaned do every thing with 1 foot.

  • HOLY FUCK HE HAS A FAST RIGHT FOOT!!!!

  • hes only double stroking though, millions of drummers can do that.

    you can lean here: watch?v=4PGPU89hM4U

just practice that for a few months and you'll be laughing.

But don't get me wrong, Gerald is an incredible drummer!

  • he's not using heel toe, get the modern drummer dvd ;)

  • this dude has chops like crazy!!!!!!!!

  • 0:56 ROFL

    YYEEEAAAH!

  • his grooove is so nice, chops are koooool

  • with his right foot. like most gospel chops drummers

  • how does he do that bass drum thing at 0:40?

  • no it is a given fact that gerald heyward doesn't use double bass or double pedals

  • actually its just one foot because if he was doing double bass drum then his hit-hat would be open..his foot is just fast lol

  • Its called the heel-toe teahnique.

    Look it up on youtube.

I learned it off youtube and got it perfect after about 2 weeks of practice.

    Good for jazz.

  • It doesn't have to be a heel-toe technique to get single foot doubles like that. You can get the same thing with heel-up simply by having a good rebound with the ball of your foot. But you're right - heel-toe is one way to achieve it, because like most things, everyone has their own way of doing it!

  • True that, personally though, I use heel toe on a single pedal. But i use double pedals.

  • true. the modern drummer mag came out for this month. he sez he never plays with heel down. i cant doit with out heels tho.

  • its the heel toe technique only its developed so fast..thats one of the things gerald is known for..his fast foot

  • 0:12 to 0:19

    can you say funky?

  • cool man

looks like a robot when he plays

  • fuckin tight

  • love it *_*

  • funkin funky

  • That`s a funny grip! lol

  • oh nooo!

  • damn now thats a fast foot

  • swung!

  • hahah yup.

  • Wow he´s good! :D

  • That is some badass shit right there Gerald.

  • Gerald is a beast!

  • HE HAS VERY GOOD TIMING

  • sync much? :(

  • the beat at 29 is the prince of belair intro beat!

  • parabens pelo seu talento Deus te abençoe sucessos

  • Amazing drumming.....Yeah is right!

  • prince of belair theme song drummer?

  • LOL That comment really made me laugh when i look at his outfit lol

  • one the grooviest drummer that i have ever seen

  • wow!

  • I wanna see that Jojo guy playing with Mary J see if he can lay down a groove such as nice as Gerald!!!!!! THis man is Sick Funky!!!!!!!!!

  • Exactly. They're both great players, in their own respect. I couldn't really see either of them switching places and getting the same reaction that put them in the lime light in the first place.

  • lol...he's gotten much better since this time

  • jojo is jojo lool but why compare him with GERALD!!!! :S:S:S lool

  • mike johnston and zach hill have fast feet to doubles but jojo mayer has a fast foot to singles triplets asn quads. they can't compare to immense technique jojo has

  • i 2nd that. all these players are amazing no doubt. but the knowledge and experience jojo has is just so deep.

  • so sick!

  • jojo is my favorit drummer but the truth is him and this gentalman sound nothing alike, and another truth is that nether of them have the worlds fastest feet, but i am sure that both there feet are much faster then any of ours , and it is not speed that gets you payed, it is groove style and originalitty and both jojo and heyward score perfect 10

  • so groovy

  • thats nice

  • thats what happens when you puresound beaters.............anyway jojo mayer owns this dude on the right foot sorry

  • he doesn't have the fastest foot on earth, jojo mayer does

  • jojo does not have a fast foot.... zach hill does

  • mike johnston so has the fastest foot

  • mike johnston? ill check him out see zach hill

  • does gerald heyward use heel toe technique ???? or those swivels or sumthing?

  • Just kick the pedal. Don't worry about technique.

  • that foot of his!! is just wow

  • haha yea i like his doubbles theyre tight!

  • that foot!

  • yeah, it's kewl....luv ur beats lol

  • very clean ....

  • is rigth feet is amazing fast and clean..

  • haha! 0:58..."yeah..." hahahahahaha

  • yeeeeeeeeeeeeah! rofl

  • 0:56- 1:05 was soooooooooooooooo good!!!

  • astig

  • Yes Eddie and Gearld are related they are cousin

  • i dunno if any one asked this yet and it might be a stupid question... sorry if it is but is he related to eddie heyward?

  • nice
