  • When this music is applied to any scene of action, the sheer amount of awesome raises to OVER 9000!!!!!

  • hello tvtropes

  • @pcy623

Fancy meeting you here. The Apocalypse Now page, I take it?

  • this is a joke from me the only true way to fly a helicopter is by humming this song

  • Funny how you dont find the apocalypse now clip under Hojotoho

  • its like i need to save the world.

  • Fröken Nilsson, jag är helt övertygad om att Opera är något för en bond dotter. Himlens röst påminner om oss att inte ens djävulen kan ta himlens gåvor från oss.

  • probably the most well-played ensemble performance i've ever heard, and i've heard them all. just awesome all-around.

  • So glad to hear Walkuries actually hitting the high notes dead on instead of sliding all over the place. Beautiful work!

  • Wagner really made the Valkyries come to life. If you close your eyes, you can see them riding over the battlefied and gathering on the rock. Brilliant piece of music. Right up there with Tchaikovsky's 1812 Festival Overture and Mussorgsky's Night on Bare Mountain.

  • These Valkyries are magnificent! They sing rather than just shriek an approximation to the notes. I have always liked Karl Böhm's interpretations too.

Thank you very much for posting this.

  • Great post/video performance!

  • im related to richard wagner and i had no idea he wrote this.... crazy didnt know i was connected to greatness

  • These valkyries should be given a prize!!! I love that there is at least one doing the written trill and that Solti doesn't kick it into such high gear that the voices get lost.

  • @babydrane It's a good rendition indeed. The conductor here is Boehm, though. :o)

  • does anyone else want to chant "kill the wabbit" to this? :x

  • @Rhenaya

    SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOG!

  • @Rhenaya "kill the wabbit" is meant to make children familiar with classical music and opera, like many other ones from disney

  • @MartirioEterno Very good. "Kill the Wabbit" is from What's Opera, Doc with Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd by Chuck Jones in the Warner Bros Animation Studios. None of these People/Characters/Studios have anything to do with DIsney, apart from being traditional Animation.

Sorry for being such a wiseass, but thats the way it is.

  • Firetruck!

  • I always have to think about choppers when I hear this -.-

  • @BloodyBBQ - thats because you saw that movie with the Coronel

  • mágico, ponia en practica la magia teutonica

    de las mitologias germanicas

  • This song can cure hangovers- try it, you must play at high volumn

  • @demonorse

Or make them worse, thanks for the tip!

  • Wagner is amazing

  • Wow!

I almost gone deaf! Love it! So much energy!!!

  • she sings this like she could do it all day (although I guess to sing the whole role of Brunnhilde, you'd need to do just that) =P

  • One of the best classical pieces ever. Makes me want to board a dc10 and bomb the crap outta people!

  • simplesmente magnifico

  • i've tried eight versions now, and youtube will not let me upload a video with ride of the valkyries on it. i thought it was public domain, but warner music group seems to own the recording of every version out there. this is the only song that i will allow on my latest animation, but i can't find a version that youtube doesn't turn around and immediately mute. what do i have to do? where can i find a recording of this song that actually is in the public domain?

  • Just a small point. Birgit Nilsson may well have been Brunnhilde in this production, but she doesn't sing in this part of the opera. ;)

  • Simcopter!

  • I wonder if I could someday hide a pair of earphones inside my kendo mask during a practice..

listening to this, no one would ever stop me!!

    hahaha

  • Walküre

  • Valkyire

    Choosers of the Slain

  • Hallo Smorgy,

This one I did find by chance. But I must tell you that the Heiatoho comes out I don't appreciate too much.

It should be much more clipped, less operatic.

As to the music, well, Karl Böhm is better for Mozart. This music sounds a bit as played by an Umpah-band.

As to Wagner's antisemitism and political ideas in general, it might be useful to find out, at first, what he had to say.

    Georg

    Georg

  • Just their culture. He thought it was their enemy too. He thought if they did that they would be alright.

  • "It should be much more clipped, less operatic."

Well Georg, you're welcome to that opinion, naturally, but saying it "should be" implies that it's a mistake to sing it otherwise. Actually, the score says the high note should be held and even trilled. Most sopranos struggle with that (not surprisingly), resulting in a convention that you apparently like. Some of us think the written version is better.

Actually, this is the best balanced recording of the vocals I've ever heard (live or studio).

  • great song

  • Beautiful...! I imagine the Valkyries riding on their horses looking so powerful, godly, untouchable, regal... it's amazing how this music can set your imagination and senses on fire...

    Cheers!

P.S. I'm new to the world of opera :)

  • the best classic song ever!!

  • Great song in Hungary and in the world!

  • wasn't this hitlers favourite song ?

  • Who cares? And what if it was? If Hitler had loved hot dog, would you be asking people who also enjoy hot dog the same sort of question?

  • But maybe he's just interested...

But I totaly Agree with SDCmorg.

    Anyway great song!

  • wagner was racist, so much said, but his music is genious...

  • who cares ? Great man !

  • pretty everyone back then was racist using today standards. Yes, we are so superiour today...

  • Thinking you are better then your ancestors is a form of discrimination!!

  • Read his comment again. It's sarcasm. He is actually saying the complete opposite.... that we are NOT any better from people back then.

  • My point is still valid - let me explain. If Pilzwerver is lamenting the fact that people today are still as racist, as they where a hundred years ago; he would only find this unagreable if he thinks he is not racist himself. Therefor he thinks he lives a higher ethical standard then his ancestors. There is afterall one difference in terms of racial-relationships between the 19th and the 20/21th century, we pretend we don't judge, while people in the past had no such mores.

  • Excuse me, but my understanding of English dictates that when someone uses the pronoun 'we' in a sentence, he is including himself in it. So... your extrapolation of him appearing to think that he is better than everyone else is actually invalid.

Now. I'm going to allow metalhead's comment to go through. But this is the last comment of this sort I'll let post. This is a MUSIC CLIP. Anyone want to discuss philosophy or politic can have the courtesy to take it to personal message thingy instead!

  • @croscream >>> Are you people unable to listen to Wagner's music without bringing up racism ! It's all been said before ad nauseam. Ad fucking nauseam.

  • @SDCmorg funny but true haha.

  • DAS IST !! KULTUR------

  • ..Reinkultur !! ;)

  • this is rock n roll

  • FANTASTIC 10/10

  • Who's the mezzo on this? She sounds familiar, but I can't place her. Thanks.

  • If I recall correctly, the four mezzo Valkyries are Annelies Burmeister, Sona Cervena, Gertraud Hopf, Sieglinde Wagner... and the alto one is Elisabeth Schärtel. :o)

  • wihtout vocals i would like it even more...

    5* anyway

  • Pew Pew Lasers!

  • @plumpudding2701 I disagree. Wagner was indeed an anti-semite and, by most accounts, a thoroughly morally-suspected and distinctly unpleasant man. That said, the Nazi Part wasn't formed until 30 years AFTER Wagner's death!

So accuse Wagner of being a traitorous friend and an anti-semite, if you will. But keep in mind he wasn't alive when the Nazis came around and couldn't very well have prevented or applauded the fact that Hitler and his crowd liked his music.

  • Idiot, the ideals of the romantic epoche were missed for nazi propaganda...

    die gedanken sind frei.

  • johnson70069. There's no need to broadcast your ignorance.

  • Best version... ever... thank you Karl

  • (((piccy of birgit with her horsey)))

    bless xx

  • BIRGIT IS NOT SINGING HERE! why is there a piccy of her ? goodness me though that helmwige high note to start with is a jaw dropper...wowee...well done.. gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous

  • Walkürenritt is the title of richard wagner if you want to find it you should say the name and the title and eyeryone knows how to help you finding it ; ) really

  • Hi, years ago i've heard in a vinyl disk, titled Herbert von Karajan's greatest hits, i think, a version of "Walkurenritt". Do anyone know something about that and where to find this disk or cd?

    Thank you very much

  • Donth you hear the laser? It can only bee Nilsson.

  • Well, Bruennhilde doesn't enter until the end of this number indeed, so you shouldn't be hearing Birgit's voice. I don't have the CD anymore... don't remember who the minor Valkyries are, but Leonie Rysanek was the Sieglinde. ;o)

  • ..tho.. Birgit was known to be pretty generous about lending her high notes...

  • No laser here - it ends BEFORE Brünnhilde's entrance. she was happy to lend her high notes, but no one could handle them but her.

  • didnt this song come on a war movie?

  • It is used in the 'helicopter fleet' scene in Apocalypse Now. :o) Very aptly at that, I think. In the opera, this music is when the goddesses (daughters of Wotan) enter Act III of 'Die Walkuere' riding their horse (per Norse myth, their ride is what create the aurora borealis). :o)

  • Thank you for posting simple version! I want it.

  • Birgit Nilsson is not singing here......the other Valkuries are..but after this ride Brunnhilde appears with Sieglinde...that's stupendous singing!!!!!
