I REALLY liked Buddy's tone when he was playing that Guild. He sounded so much rawer then. Since he started playing the Strat he sounds more subdued. Still awsome, just more subdued.
@teebeeferris I'm afraid Buddy was using a two-tone brownburst, maple neck, long before the Guild.....straight into a Bassman, no effects. This set-up would be just as effective today regardless of the musicians colour.
Buddy was using strats as far back as the 1960s. We all know the sound of humbuckers, but those of use who really play from Hendrix and Blackmore to SRV Ray and Yngwie - and never get the real living master Jeff Beck - the Strat is a magical instrument. Maybe the thinner tone lets more of what come from out fingers get through to the people.
Regarding Old vs. New Buddy Guy......His latest Album "Skin Deep" is amazing, amazing guitar playing up and down, slow, fast........mid 70's and cranking
every time buddy pics up a guitar it is awesome. the best part about buddy is the diversity of his catalog. from acoustic all the way to buddy baddest all ways keeps me coming back for more. can't wait till feb 18 two legends one show buddy and B.B.
I agree with teebeeferris, my favorite Buddy Guy recordings are from 1957-1970. I have been uploading some of these recordings, so please check them out!
I strongly agree. I've always thought there were two Buddy Guys. An "early" and a "Late". He was a different man playing that Guild. Raw and exciting. Not bad now either. I don't know where you've gotten all of these videos Teebee, but I find myself liking ALOT of your postings. We must be musically related somehow. Keep up the GOOD work.
I think a guitarsit can whatever guitar he likes... Whatever feels and sounds right is the guitar for you!!! and play like a white boy? What does a white boy play like?
not sure,,,I am no expert, but you just got to check out Johnny Guitar Watson from like, 1953/54....3 hours past midnight album, and a few more from the early days....he was as cutting edge on the ripping and just flat out balls to the wall blues that we love today! I am learning this tune tonight after watching this video. Man, this is smokin!!!!
Is it just me, or does his tone sound better playing that guitar than the strat that he plays. Not that his strat tone is bad, this one is just...nice.
It's just like Eric Clapton in his Beano/Cream days...He used a Gibson and a Marshall, and then when he went to strats, his tone got a little thinner too. It's funny. I mean, these guys(Eric and Buddy) can do whatever they want. :) It's just that to me, their tone sounded pretty godly with good humbucker-type guitars. S'all in the fingas, though. :)
Wow is right, I had never seen this one before. Nice find. I hope anyone crtitical of Buddy since fame, grammys, etc watch some of this old stuff. He's still hot (past 70 now, good gawd)and I love him. This era though is like watching Ruth/Mays/Unitas/Montana in their prime- something to truly behold. I love the clip of Hendrix watching him play... Buddy is one of the most significant musical links not of just generations but complete eras.
Wow! Great stuff, according to hairstyle and Guild guitar - I beleive it must be 1967...not 63. But who cares, it`s just fantastic to watch theese old footages of Buddy. Knut

I agree, while his licks are hot he gets a really thin tone with the Strat.

Is it my imagination or did not Buddy Guy invent "ripping"!?!? No accident that tops the influence lists for both Hendrix and Clapton.

Nope, Buddy definitely invented "ripping"
