First of all, I have to say that NASA engineers are just fucking idiots!
The rover was going to drive "off road". Why did stupid engineers put a tiny ass crap wheel in the multi-million dollar rover and the wheel design is so stupid because it has a space so big that sand would fill it and put a huge resistance to the wheel.
One way to free the rover is just to make the wheels axles articulate almost like a spider, Rolling the wheels would just make rover dig deeper to it's doom.

Wow. Fail. Educate yourself on the issues before insulting people. It will make you seem less like an ass.
The rover was heavily constrained by size, to fit in the lander, which was constrained by size to fit in the rocket.
They tired what you suggested, it failed, too.
