  • You're a hero, Mr Gatzen! What is your opinion on reinforcement rings?

  • The red flamed/black kit is maple and the blue/white flamed kit...birch.

  • what finish is the drum set? looks awesome!

  • why is your kit tilted a little towards the drummer side?

  • @reloud37 It's called DrumFrame...you can check it out at info@drumframe com

  • You say to keep your bass drum vertical to lessen hoop distortion, so why is your bass drum on a big angle?

  • @fordshop11 drumframe?

  • Hey bob what's your opinion of Evans hydraulics glass drum heads. I was thinking of trying these heads out. By the way awesome, helpful videos.

  • Thank you for taking the time to answer questions and give tips.

    Carl

  • @carll1969 You're very welcome... but It goes both ways. I get tremendous satisfaction when the tips help out!

  • Hey Bob I have another question. Does it make a difference when playing heavier music on the drums to have a double bass pedal or just another bass drum? Which would you recommend? Thanks.

  • @espguitarpro77 ahhh... often asked question... for heavy playing your gonna get way more horsepower out of 2 drums. Keep in mind, the invention of the double BD pedal was driven largely by "less gear" to schlep... not sound quality.

  • is he homosexual? real question.

  • @dpgiaca97 Don't think so..been married for 41 years

  • hey bob, ive decided to get this setup of drum/cymbals...

orange county venice 5 piece drum kit ( 12/9 rack tom, 14/14 and 16/14 floor toms, 20/22 bass, and a mapex mpx maple 13/6 snare)

for cymbals im gunna get ziljian A custom hi-hats, 16 crash, 8 in splash, and 20 inch ride. a 18 zht fast crash, and a 14 wuhan hand made china.

for head im gunna get ec2 for the toms batter and ec for the reso, emad batter and ec3 coated for the bass, and for the snare im getting a reversed center dot, and

  • BIG thanks... Terry is on my faves list... thank you gc!!

  • Bob, you are awesome!

  • Bob, Is that Hazy 300 with that dot applied is something that is in stock? Or is it something that is custom made? Because I love the sound of that snare......

  • @hotdaddyg2k Sorry, I applied the EC ring. We were considering bring out the hazy 300 with the dot but there were issues with de-lamination due to the thin 3 mil film.

  • O haha I had them tune at a low B. Ok that should help

  • Like I said, I got those new Evans batter heads in today. Overall the sound great ( thanks to your tuning videos!) the only problem is that theres a HUGE overtone coming from the snare. I think it's probably because I still haven't replaced my reso heads yet, so I still have those crappy "fusion" heads. Also the snares rattle like crazy when I hit the left rack tom, I guess those snares can't handle the deeps sounds evans heads make lol!

  • @MyFilmsProduction Tune the snr batter and reso to an "A" and simply move the batter up in 1/2 step increments until you hear something you like. Put some mileage on each setting before increasing the batter head tension. Hope this helps

  • Ok that fine btw I got my new head in today

  • Here's what I think I'm gunna decide on. Sabian b8 15" and 17" crash, and 8" splash, Wuhan 16" china, meinl 20" ride, and I'll keep my Paiste pst5 13" hi hats, and 18" Crash ride. Also I'm looking for a cheap bell ( like under $30) do you think you could help me find one?

  • @MyFilmsProduction Sounds like a good plan, set-up. Wish I could help ya but I'm always over my head in work. I struggle to respond on YT and FB... because I think it's important to keep drummers... drumming!

  • I've got another question for you ( sorry to bother you AGAIN lol) but after I finish getting my new heads I'm gunna get some new cymbals. I current just have 2 cymbals on my kit ( Paiste pst5 13" hi hats, and 18" crash) I think that they sound pretty good, but I need more cymbals than just 2. I kno that your a zildjian guy, and I'm considering buying there zbt cymbals, but I kinda like Sabian b8 ( I found a deal on those 6 cymbals fir 300$) but I'm noticing that meinl makes some really cheap c

  • @MyFilmsProduction Zildian and Sabian cymbals are essentially the same in regards to the basic means of production. Cymbal choices are highly subjective, more so than the drum components. For instance, Zildjian will send me 3-4 cymbals of same design... generally I'll lock into one and the others just sit around. That's why they send me multiples. trust your gut! is my best advice. I'd follow your instinct on the b8's. Happy Hunting!

  • Haha I understand, hope it turns out good for ya

  • Yah, that's cool, but I still think it would help if you made videos on these topics... It would draw a different audience, and I personally think I learn way more with a video. Also, just curios, what is this "DrumFrame" you keep talking about

  • @MyFilmsProduction Thanks.. . I'll keep them in mind. I'm working a series for the channel based based on "Ingenuity". Hope to have something by the the end of the year. This is a very busy time for me.... deadlines on product development, R & D. etc. Always struggling with time & energy! No complaints... simply comes with the territory.

  • @bobgatzen Haha thanks I decided to make a list of video suggestions for you. Tell me what you think:

    How to make drums comfortable

    Soundproofing drums

    Adjusting hi hat clutch

    Cleaning cymbals

    Drumming definitions (for beginners)

I think, if you make these it will help ALOT of people. Thanks Bob

  • @MyFilmsProduction Thanks M... great topics for consideration. Over I have addressed many of them through the DrumFrame website and articles in Modern Drummer Magazine which included Drumset Ergonomics, Studio Design, Cleaning Cymbals (on YT). I like the Drum Inspo for youngsters...check out our Start with the Arts program@ startartscom. Thanks again for your suggestions

  • @bobgatzen I yah I was able to se what was wrong, I had the mount all the way down, and slanted the upways. Then I looked at some pictures of pearl drums and found out it's better to mount them high and slanted downward. Still I think that you should make a video on making drum comfortable. Also it would be a good idea to make a vid on sound proofing your drums so they don't annoy roommates, neighbors, ect...

  • @MyFilmsProduction Great suggestions!

My plan is to upload a new video series I've been entertaining. It's coming together, been very busy...just looking for a "window" to get it going.

  • Ok good, thanks. I would go with Evans Reso heads but currently I just can afford them. And I found a deal on amazon for Remo Reso head pack for only $20. But anyway, could you please answer my question about making my drums comfortable. You may have missed it cuz I ran outta space on the first comment so I finished on the next one.

  • ... Drum heads. So I can't afford anything too fancy for awhile, but if you do have an idea that may cost a little go ahead and tell so I kno what to get l8tr. Do you have any suggestions for me?

  • Haha I got another question for you ( I warned you I would have alot lol) but anyway, my tom-toms are mounted pearl style on my bass drum, so it doesn't have the L-lock style like DW and TAMA does. I've tried to get them comfortable, but I can't figure out any way to make them flat, low, and close to the other drums. It seems impossible. Currently I'm pretty low on money cuz I just bought that new drumkit, and getting those new

  • @MyFilmsProduction You should be able to do position the toms exactly the same as the L-arms style mounting. best to send me a picture to see what you doing.

  • I've got another question for you bob, do you think it would sound bad if I mixed Evans Ec-2 standard coated Batter head with a clear Remo resonant head, for the toms, cuz I found some really good deals on amazon for these. Btw I got that "session" drum set. I think it sounds great, besides the crapy fusion style heads

  • @MyFilmsProduction Both Remo or Evans single ply heads will work fine for the reso side. However, the Evans, "EC-reso" is a first in the industry. It provides more warmth and focused tone especially with it's "dad" ...the EC batter.

  • @bobgatzen Thank you so much Bob. You've been a HUGE inspiration for me! I love watching your videos, I've learned so much. I also love the way that you reply to every comment ( I'll probably ask you plenty of questions haha) thanks. Do you think sometime you can a vid teaching us how to set up our drumset, making it easy to use and comfortable? That would help alot of people.

  • @MyFilmsProduction

    Well thanks so much Tristin!

I did a workshop on "Drum Set Ergnomics" for Modern Drummer Magazine. Perhaps they still have it in their archives. This is why I invented the DrumFrame... you can check out on line. I'm planning on new vids for the channel... great suggestion and reminder... Bob

  • @bobgatzen Oh, thats really cool.

  • @bobgatzen yah I think I'm gunna get them. What kind of heads would you suggest if I play rock/metal style music. And do you also think I should replace the resonant heads too?

  • @MyFilmsProduction

Choice of heads is subjective...personal choice. Here's an Evans head set-up that is versatile, offers good durability and will get you started.

Toms: EC-2-SST clear batter / EC-reso or Genera reso

Snare: ECS-RD or PowerCenter-RD or the ECS-RD for heavier duty, with the Hazy 300 Snare / Puresound Blaster> “Custom Pro” snares system

BD- EMAD 2 or EMAD Onyx and EMAD reso with an EQ pad

    Hope this helps

  • Sorry let me finish

And he said he got them for $700. I will probly replace the heads with Evans and use my Paiste pst5 cymbals. Do you think I should take this offer.

    Note: I am only a beginner/intermediate drummer.

  • @MyFilmsProduction 80$!! Sounds like a steal to me.

  • Great video, it must cost you a fortune for that kit. But anyway I want to ask you if this is a good idea. Ok lately I've been using some pretty bad drums made by a budget brand for DW called Sound Percusion. I've played for quite some time, and I finally have decided to get a new kit from a buddy of mine for only $80. The brand of the kit is "Session". I doubt if you've ever heard anything about that but for $80 I can't help myself from buying them. He says they were made in Germany, and he go

  • what is your reasoning for having a clear instead of a coated drum heads on ou snare?

  • @TheSaxplaya1 it's a specialized Evans head. In fact ...it is coated. It's a 2-ply / outer and inner control rings, coated head. The "ECS-RD". You can check out the stats @ Evans on-line. I use head often for it's durability and sound, especially good rimshots.

  • Hello Bob! Do you want to be awesome and send one of your dw kits to me since you're endorsed by them! J/k =]

Nice kit, I wish I had the money to afford anything close to your setup..

  • @Musefan6732 Wish i could help on this one... DW's are bit pricy, thankfully I'm am endorser.

  • @bobgatzen Yea, well hopefully one day I can become as successful as you! =]

  • @Musefan6732 Well thank you very much M! Any success I have comes from 2 laws I live by...FREEDOM & DISCIPLINE.

  • just shows that even pros click there sticks sometimes when there doing rolls! Nice vid bob

  • @TheDeniedhopedrummer Thanks....I think aper!! I'm laughing!

  • @bobgatzen haha its just nice to see pros are human drummers too :P

  • @TheDeniedhopedrummer How nice of you to say that... mean more to em tha you know. Thanks D!

  • Incredible, Bob.

Maybe you could help me out with something. I own a 14" Pearl Session Custom snare, and the bottom of the shell is sanded out a little where the snares go. This makes it very hard to tune every side of the bottom head to the same pitch, because there are big ripples around the sanded area. I think the ripples are also affecting the way the snares buzz. Why is that area sanded, and is there a way to tune the head without having to crank each lug until the ripples are gone?

  • @mrfathobo The "snare beds" are crucial in"seating" the snare wires properly to the head surface. Generally, the t-rods adjacent to each end of the snare bed require a bit more tensioning than the remaining 4 t-rods. So, yes it's OK to apply more tension to the snare bed rods until the ripples disappear.

  • Hi Bob, gotta say your instructional videos here are the best and I've learned a lot. I'm a snare drummer on a drumline and I gotta say my tuning technique apparently isn't the best, ha. Your videos are great and I've learned a lot, thanks. I am looking to transfer to a kit though and I'd like to ask your opinion on what type of heads would be good for a Gretsch Catalina Maple set? Tom sizes are 8x10 9x12 14x14 16x16 snare:6x14 and bass:18x22. My goal would be to play a little of all styles.

  • @apercussionist91 Hi ap, depends on whether you prefer a 2-ply or single ply head.

2-ply- For all-around performance the EC2-SST combined with the EC-reso is a good choice.

Single ply- G-1 clear (batter&reso) on the rack toms and G+ coated batter/Genera reso on the floor toms is a good combo.

    Happy hunting!

  • @bobgatzen thanks bob, you're amazing.

  • @apercussionist91 My pleasure!

  • hi Bob im a huge fan. you have tought me alot of things and helped me become a better drummer. i have one question, did u just happen to find your blue and white flame and black and red flame drumsets and decided to buy them or did u have them custom made.

  • @bamfreak249 Thanks for the kind words B!

They were custom made for a childrens program I started a few years ago. Billy Ashbaugh and presented clinics in public schools across the country. You can check it out startarts com it's a cool program...check the celebs that supported it!

  • I love the blue/white birch personally and this sounds unbelievable, im trying to get my kit to sound decent

  • @THEanthony12101

I agree, the birch kit feels & sounds great.

My formula is SOUND > FEEL > EMOTION > SELF-EXPRESSION. It's worth the investment of time & energy. Keep working towards this goal and you'll be a happy drummer camper...Good luck Anthony!

  • love dw drums but why do you have colour mismatch

    but great vid any way

  • Thanks addy!

I don't have a 16" tom for the Black/Red flamed Maple kit so I used the 16 from the Blue/White Birch kit. For me, Sound takes precedence over aesthetics.

  • Remo makes great heads. But more importantly, ya can't knock personal choice. My feelings are..." If it sounds good to you... it's a good sound!

  • Man, I could watch this stuff all day! Thanks Bob! I'm a huge fan of your drum tuning videos but unfortunately electric drums aren't nearly as fun to tune... Although I may soon be acquiring an 80's Tama kit, and in a few weeks I am ordering a Phattie kit! Can't wait to tune them up and play drums again! You're a true inspiration, and the only question I have is how did you figure all this stuff out? trial and error?

    Thanks!

  • Your too kind...thank you L! Two words... Dedication & Passion

  • Thank u so much for the videos =) it has helped me so much ! / Andy from Sweden

  • You're very welcome. I enjoy sharing. Thanks for taking time to write.

  • You are truely an awesome drummer/guy. I love how u play and respond to comments on ur videos. Keep rocking man!

  • Thanks so much, I really appreciate your taking the time to view, listen and write back.

  • Oops...forgot to say you're welcome!

  • No, the batter is a 2-ply EC and the reso is a single ply (genera film) EC- resonant

  • Hey bob.

A friend of mine lend me his pearl export series drumset. he doesn't allows me to make new heads on it and my quesion is how I can get the best sound out of 7 year old used pearl protone heads ?

    Thanx oli

  • Ha!! 7 years old? 7 years of age in "DRUMHEAD" years is 700 years. Change those babies they're done doing there job... it's time to retire em.

  • look at my video they are even in a good condition.^^ :D

ok if you say it i will change them :) i think about having the same heads like ulrich

  • What type heads is Ulrich playing on?

  • i think remo... coated ambassador... on toms

  • Hi Bob,

I just got a Mapex M birch kit that has G2's and an Aquarian super II on the kick.

The sizes are 8x8,10x10,10x12,14x14 and 18x20.

My problem is that I like a fairly low tuning but need a good stick response and to get it with these heads forces me to tune to a higher pitch than I like.

The heads are used but not dented or worn out.

Any suggestions for a better choice to obtain a low note and good stick response?

When I solve this problem, I'll make a video with the kit.

    Thanks

  • The Evans new (2nd generation/black rings) EC-2 clears ganged up with the EC-resos are getting rave reviews. It's a great 'all-around" combination that offers excellent durability without sacrificing overall tone.

    Happy New Year tube!

  • @bobgatzen Thanks for the rocket response!

I will document the present sound of the kit with a single ribbon mic with no EQ then try your suggestion and report back with the results.

Is there a method to determine if a head has been tuned too high previously?

I have a sneaky feeling that this may be the case because the floor tom is plenty low and has decent stick response if I don't hit it dead center but the two middle toms need to go too high to get response.

A drummers life is so complex!

  • Over-tensioning... not likely the problem. Many drummers over tension and de-tune. But you have to be careful with the amount of over tensioning. When I install a new head, I tune to a whole step over the pitch I'm aiming for. Play it for awhile, then de-tune to your desired pitch.

  • Bob, your seemingly quite the unorthodox drummer, yet you do know the basics. My problem is I've always been a good drummer but lacked the fundamentals of playing and tuning drums. I've only recently gone back to the basics and I plan to rebuild on that with these videos. You really have a dedication to drums that is inspiring. I wouldn't say that if I didn't mean it. That's the drummer connection!

  • Thank you so much Jon... "unorthodox" is one of my favorite words! My agenda is to help drummers discover the beauty and benefits of in discovering your personal "Sound & Feel" at the kit. This is the beauty of the drum set.

Happy New Year... please keep me posted on your endeavor!

  • bob, you are amazing....as a beginning drummer i appreciate this info and the tuning info greatly...thanks

  • That's always great to hear...big thanks for taking the time to say that!

  • I followed your kick tuning video and I was able to tune my Gretsch 18" Catalina Club kick so that it sounds wondeful...A very punchy and deep thud....I then took an RTA mic and measured the Frequency response and was blown away at how low it goes.

Your information is clear, direct and the product of many years of experience. Thanks a bunch!

  • Well thank you very much jasaggio... happy to to help out

  • very nice kit. i have a question though. what snare would you recommend? i am looking for a new snare to update my gradually improving kit.

  • Please describe your current snare drum, wood, metal, 14" brand?

  • well, right now my entire kit is a pearl reference series, but when i bought the kit. i really disliked the snare. no matter how i tuned it, or what heads i used, i couldnt find the tone i was looking for. my current snare is a Tama starclassic G maple. 6x14 is the size.

  • My fave is the Puresound 20-wire "Blasters". Puresound are high quality in regards to the snare wires and construction. It's worth a try.

  • Are you referring to snare wires or snare drum/

  • what do you mean buy tuned to a G and stuff? also do you have anything in your bass drum (ie. pillows)

  • Tuning to a SPECIFIC pitch at each t-rod location is the goal. The challenge is to get the same pitch at each t-rod location. This is how you get a tom or snare drum to sound it's best...to SING! Best to check out the "Toms Tuning" videos on the channel.

  • So you use a clear head on the snare? Cool, I use a Clear Remo Controlled Sound, it sounds good too...more brighter and crispier...hehe I seriously love that snare sound though...seems so versatile

  • Agreed... the coated snare batter simply became the "standard" largely due to the use of brushes as well as sticks...duh!

  • Would those bass pedals be longer than axis longboards? They sure look longer.

  • No, actually the BOA board is about the same length as a standard pedal board...like a DW 5000 for instance.

  • why a clear EC head on the snare?

  • Just a personal preference. I like the timbre it produces on small diameter snare drums (12 & 13"). But I do switch around with other batter head styles... just decided to use it on this video. How's it sound to you?

  • really good actually. I will try this combination for sure. with the snares off, it sounds like a timbale. and this is great for variations..for latino and much more. and with the snares on, it is more crisp.

  • Hey Bob, I recently got my first drumset, it's a peace 5 piece with a "14 Hi-Hat set and a "20 Ride, do you have any recommendations to get different sounds out of my Ride that could help me get that smack of a crash going in my playing?

  • It's a matter of weight, thickness. If you want a ride/crash go for a med-med/heavy type ride. I use the Zildjian Breakbeat for that very reason. It's got enough ping but can easily be crashed. Also, adding 1 or 2 "rivets will create more sustain, not a crash sound but a similar feel at the stick

  • Damn all of that looks pretty expensive lol.

  • hey bob iv been watching your video's and found them greatly helpful. my toms needed tuning so i thought what the hell i have a few hours spare. so i went and tuned all of my drums. except my my 12" rack tom. i like the sound. but i decided that id give it a good re-tune anyway because it didnt fit in context with my other drums. now when i was tuning the reso-head i started bleeding from under my nail, and i thought it would be cool if i wrote on my drum in blood.

  • then tuned it up again. off the kit its great sounding, just how i like it. on the kit im not sure but it sounds odd. i think the blood on my reso-head has dampened it whereas all my others are undampened.

do you think my blood would have dampened the head. and if it has is the head salavageable from the perma-dampening or will i have to buy a new one.

thanks for your time in reading this as i know iv draged on. once again, great video's

  • Thanks p! Hard to say, you never know....hmmmm..."Bloody Dampeners"...a new category. Perhaps you can score an endorsement with the "Band-Aid" company. Or how about a new version of "Live-Aid" to raise money for people suffering around the world..."Band-AId", has a nice ring to it. Just thowing out ideas... heh heh

  • haha i wouldent recomend using blood as a dampener. it hurts :D

i might just do that though. dunno where id find all the blood though

  • That's great to hear.

Gotta send us a picture of the "BLOODY DRUM"!!!!

  • thats fucked up.

  • so. are you telling me you've never scrawled on something in blood before? you havent lived my friend

  • haha

  • no problem...its different! its good!

  • We're speaking the same language!

  • you are brilliant..so creative!

  • Well thank you very much...made my day!

  • hey bob i didnt really watch the vid just listen to the audio while i was replying to some of my comments and i noticed you use regal tip drum sticks what kind do you use nice solo in the backround by the way

  • I'm a longtime Regal Tip endorser. I designed 2 models of signature drumsticks... the "BG Maples" and "Hickory" drum sticks. It's a unique design that works great for me.

  • Bob, I was not able to get to your clinic at Sam ash, and thats one clinic I needed.

    Next time.

Your Craviotto snare is the killinest thing I have ever heard, super sweet sound.

The audio on here is awesome, nice work !

I do have a couple of questions ,

are those Pacific pedals good for heel/toe tecnique?

Percentage wise, how much is resonance increased by suspending a bass drum as opposed to it sitting on the floor?

Thanks and keep up the great work.

    Charlie, aka Drumodad

  • Thanks Charlie.

Yes, heel-toe works just fine on the "BOA" pedals.

Raising the BD and more importantly, not "tilting" it back towards the pedal significantly increases both resonance while lower the over pitch.

Good to hear from you...thanks again

  • thats a gorgeous set. I hope to be endorsed by DW and Evans someday. any tips?

  • Thank you!

My best advice is to focus on your being a "value-resource" to the drum company. By that I mean, what you can do for the company versus what the drum company can do for you. This philosophy is what solid, longtime endorsements, relationships are built on. Don't give up!

  • thanks, I've been watched like 3 hours worth of your vids and it made me just wanna spend a whole day tuning my kit. you rock

  • evans should make your own signature head.

  • Thank you!... but that's not Evans style. We work as an integrated team where everyone contributes and shares the credit.

  • Bob, who are your influences?

  • My biggest influence and initial inspiration to play the drums is the "drum set" itself. I love mechanics and creativity. For me, the drum set represents the crucial and delicate balance between art & science, intent & intuition, getting and growing ideas. Of course I'm inspired by drummers like Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Jordan, Dennis Chambers and thankfully... the list goes on and on!

  • I'm looking to replace my crash, as my old one is broken. With a £230 budget, looking for an all-purpose clean-sounding crash. Is there anything anyone particularly recommends?

  • Zildjian A Custom crashes and splashes are great for all-around performance

  • cheers I'll check them out.

  • wow that must of cost a lot of money for all of that but ur like pritty much a pro so you could get that lol nice work

    XD

  • Thanks again Hockey!

  • how can you know in witch letter the drum is tuned ?

    like yours , tom 8 x 7" 6ply maple / tuned @ G ?

    but how you c

  • Pick up a metronome that has pitch references on it (for guitar tuning) and match the drum pitch to the metronome pitch. "B" is a good pitch for most 8" drums.

  • can you do it with a zoom H2?

i see in your video's you got it to

  • The Zoom is great for recording, documentation. Alway, best to line-in to it from your mixer for quality audio.

For pitch & tempo references the Planet Waves Metronome is killer. Also, if you have an Apple Touch there are tons of metronomes and a cool fashioned "pitch pipe" for pitch rererences.

    hope this helps

  • can you play a double pedal?

  • Yes, I always use a double pedal

  • hi bob...I have a question, what tuned recommend for this set :

    10X8 ,12X9 ,14X11 & 16X16.

    all 9 ply birch.

search and search and can not find this information :( please

  • Pitches can very somewhat depending on head combos, suspension systems and shell types. However, one of my favorite tunings for this configuration is 16"> B, 14">C#-D, 10" same pitches, octave higher and 12" > G-Bb (below the 10").

The largest 14-16-18 and smallest 8-10 diameter drum have the "least" amount of tuning range, so tune from the "bottom up"

BD- lowest possible pitch for both heads, than raise the batter slightly. Pitch is difficult to recognize from the BD.

  • How much did this set cost you?

  • Honestly I don't know. I'm a DW endorser. My guess is in the 3K range due to the custom shell and flamed finish

  • i dont like it

  • Impossible to satisfy everyone. Personal choice... the beauty of drumming

  • do u use your zoom handheld recorders when recording with your other mics.

do u prefer clear or coated heads?

  • My H-2 is always within an arm's length. I use to document ideas on the drums, so yes. But if something pops into my head when I;m not at the kit, I hit record and sing it.

Clears... unless I'm after a specific sound that services the music.

    Bob

  • I have an answer to that. Clear makes your drum sound more glassy. Coated has a more warm soft feel. I prefer coated depending on the head. I have an Aquarian Peformance II clear and it sounds like a coated. It all depends on what you like.

  • the thing that i love about you is, you always answer your posts, you explain in easy terms on how and why, you are a gentleman with an amazing talent.

man i love the kit wow awesome, and the drum track that accompanies the track is flawless, a swirling mass of rhythm that is awash with bright flashes of tone and vibrance, ecletic, yet calming with so much fluidity and passion.....superb bob, just freakin superb.

    my man.

  • I can't thank you enough for taking the time to write this wonderful comment. This one goes directly into my YT favorites files.

Upon my first visit to YT I said to myself, "Audio, video and personal conversations with viewers,,,what's not to like! My long time mission to service others has never changed or failed me. It's letters like yours that are inspirational, motivational and hopefully "contagious" for all of us.

    Thank you!

  • thankyou bob for your reply, i give you my adoration as a fan and offer my frienndship too, albeit virtual (lol) thanks for the great work in progress, your an inspiration.......amazing tricks of the trade i have now learned from you.......top man.

cheers bro .......dave jepson. if you go on face book you will see my kit to !!!!!

    thanks again......avidly watching.

  • what do u think about the ec1 clear heads and what differences and simalarties it has with the ec2's.

  • I favor the EC-2's ...I like the feel of 2 ply heads in general. The 1's are less focused, more spread and colorful overtones. It's personal choice not better or worse.

  • hey i saw your video with you and marco playing together and he was doing stick tricks and i was wondering can you make a video about showmanship and how to do stick tricks because you explain things in such a way that i learn very quickly

  • Sorry, never got into that. You might want to go to Marco's website for more of that kind of style

  • Bob, you are simply amazing! You inspired me watching your videos today, i played drums all day today after watching a few videos. I tuned up my drums and re arranged them today after watchign your tuning tips videos. You helped me out a whole lot, i learned a ton just by going through your videos. Keep up the good work man!

  • The H-2 is good for documenting ideas. For higher quality recordings, the best reproduction is to use the stereo input from a mixing console. A couple of overheads routed to a mixer then to the H-2.

  • Ahhh.... luv success stories to death! Thanks for taking the time to write

  • I keep it handy, especially doing Comasolos. When I stumble on a good idea (motif, lick etc). Even though you think..."I won't forget this one"! Ideas vaporize so I always document them not to forget em.

  • hi bob. can you help me? i have a drum that only have one crash cymbal (16') and a hi-hat. what do i need to buy? a 20' ride right? and what else? tank you. oh btw, you rule on drums :)

  • Typically, yes the 20" ride is up for bat. However, I hardly ever use 20's these days. I like the Zildjian "Breakbeat". You can ride em and crash em. Zildjian made me a few 19" prototypes...loving them. The 18's are on most of the vids and a 20" on the "Attitude Adjustment" vid.

  • thanks :)

  • but i have another question xD the 2 crash cymbals that you use are the same?? (one on the right and one the left)?

  • No the lefty cymbals are Zildjian A Customs and on the right a Trashformer and a Sound Lab Series Prototype

  • You inspire me to never stop drumming :)

  • That's great to hear... thanks mike!

  • Bob u crazy SOB, u went 3rd person on us their at 1:08!

  • Crazy? thanks for the compliment. Yeah, I saw you shaking your head up and down!

  • bob, it is a dream of mine just to have my drums sounding like yours but i can't afford to have DW . is there such a thing as a cheap drum that would at least come close to how your drums sounds? or would you recommend just changing the drum skin(imported like.. remo, evans etc.) to help with the sound or better cymbals? pedals? snare? or i just have tone my drums properly? i have a local drum.. its a never heard!!!

  • DW has a mid-priced line of drum...Pacific Drums. They offer an all maple shell kit that sounds very good that won't break the bank. Best to go to DW online and check em out.

  • I must agree with Waseritan.

You have made my snare sound so good. ITs a snare what came with my set. not the best.. but it will do until i get the cash to get a good snare.

I just never thought i could get the sound i have now out of it. Thanks bob, for helping me tune my snare!!
