While the operating was very competent, there's something that's just no right. I think it's the infinite focus. It's also very contrasty. I also think an often overlooked quality of film is the high dynamic range. There's a vast range between the lights and darks in film. It's mostly the tiny chips in these cameras. The canon HV series has done the best job with dynamic range yet because of the comparatively gigantic chip in it.
Whatever the people may say or criticize, the price doesn't matter at all whether it is a panavision cam or a cheap handheld cam. Nothing beats when it comes to creativity and passion. This clip is really good!!

why did you put redrock in your tags if you did not use a redrock? thats dumb.. and this does not look like a film it looks like some guy with a camcorder and a pc
Honestly, i don't think using motion picture lenses makes something look like film, Its still video, video with a depth of feild, and I don't think that video should try and look like film, this guy has made an awsom look with color corrected video, but it isn't film, and shouldn't try to look like film, but accept that it is what it is, cool video.
Still!!! NOBODY is answering my question! Why is "Redrock" in the tags?! It's my opinion that shallow depth of field is equally important for getting a 'film look' as 24p and color correction.. As soon as I got my Letus people started saying "damn it really looks like the movies now!" so I know that may have been the biggest thing I've done to make my video look like "the movies" . I think trying to look like film is fine, it's like in the audio world everyone tries to sound "analog"

People who make comments like "video should not try to look like film", need to get a grip. Are you still clutching to your analog recorded, vinyl records? Digital media will replace film, it's getting closer and closer. Once the average consumer can't tell the difference between footage shot on film vs. acquired digitally, the way movies are produced will change. It's simple economics. Film DPs are dinosaurs in the making if they don't adapt.
someone jealous or filled with regret over someone else achievement for example, would be looked at and told to eat their heart out by a taunting victor or fan. Hollywood would be all "damn, some kids on youtube can make cine-looking films as good as we do, with simple cameras, tricks and we spend millions to get this look.
Is that a joke? All a depth of field adapter does is allow you to use MF lenses to achieve the depth you want.
All you're seeing here is some de-saturation, cranked blacks, and a 2.55 mask. The entire thing looks the same depth, so I highly doubt an adapter was used.
I meant 2.35. It's the aspect ratio you get using Super 35mm or Anamorphic lenses. It's very wide and gives a classic cinema feel associated with cinemascope and such. You can fake this by throwing a mask (black bars) on top of your video. It's far batter if you shoot with this ratio in mind though.
It has nothing to do with speed. If you want to mimic that you have to find a camera that does 24p
the actor in the video is he the one who posted the video? if so, who is behind the camera doing the pan of the video, nice film look, i got to test my vegas too thanks for posting this :)
the canon hv20 does a great job. This was shot with a lousy panasonic md10000 camcorder. The editing gave it that look. The original shot was like any other cams
hey guys sorry for not replying for a long time. been pretty busy !!! no adapter was used for any of my videos though i've just purchased one which is on its way. btw i just used vegas to do everything ! just an amazing software. Btw thanks sooo dang much for your comments !
aside from shooting in 24p with shallow DOF you need to pay attention to lighting. DV camcorders suffer from limited tonal range (highlights mostly). You need to try to soften the contrast by using the light just after sunset, or window light, softboxes, etc. Overcast is ok, but still no good. Also, Greens and Reds with DV are usually too saturated, you will need to adjust these slightly to get the look you want.
I hate when people post their work and then don't bother to include the specifics like what camera they used, lenses, post production, etc. What's the point?
i hate when people complain and dont know when to shut the f**k up, hes going for a film look, he did plenty of testing, why should he speed feed your backside because your too lazy, go do your own tests til you get it right if your passionate about it, if not, shut up! :)
Ok, this guy seems to be keeping his thoughts to himself. So here is what I think he has done. Shot it with a HV20, in 24p or 60p( using pulldown to get it back to 24p).The vignette is DEFINATELY post. A 35mm lens adaptor causes a much messier vignette. Its been cropped to give it the "cinema" feel, and the grade has lots of saturation. With the right camera, all of you can achieve this look. Oh yes, dont forget most things look great with natural lighting, and 24p. Lets see some tests indoor ;)
thanks.....i don't know why he is keeping his thoughts to himself. why put something on youtube when you know people are going to ask about when you don't want to answer.
i second the motion. what camera did you use? i am planning to buy the CANON XL2, would you recommend that. but i guess it wouldn't matter, as long as you edit this in some software, right? correct me if i'm wrong.
hello, i guess its based on ur budget, if you have the money go for the xl2, however i believe with vegas a consumer camcorder would give you nice results :)
yeah i would agree. one can do this with a consumer cam but something like a CANON XL2 has settings to make it look more film-like, such as 16:9 and 24p.
oh, i didn't know that. but i guess that's a cool benefit with Vegas then. still, Canon XL2 has alot more features and settings. consumer cams don't have the "smooth shots" though. :-)
nice work

Making Digital footage look like film is kind of like a film-making holy grail.
Film stock is THE look to have to a movie. It is the most authentic.
It can distinguish one movie from thousands of other 'Amateur looking' movies.
riazomonero 3 years ago
I thought the holy grail was actually making a good film.
alphonsedoinel 3 years ago
If you have a 35mm camera and possibility to edit, it can make such a big difference compared to digital video.
I much prefer the look of film, but also the ease of use with digital.
