It all depends on the significant other. Some women expect it's gross income, so that they can get a bigger & better ring, wile others are much more realistic on net. If you base it on gross, you might need to save up for about 2 years to make this happen. In old folklore, the cost of the ring should be so significant to the guy that any thought/action on pissing his wife off into potential divorce would hurt him financially. (Almost like treating the ring as a dowry into marriage)
