  • This is so cool!!

  • I'm disliker no 100!!!

  • Sup New Scientist, i just unsubscribed to you.

  • thanks new scientist! you just officially earned my unsubscribe!!

  • @Mansharky you forgot the 1 on the end

  • WHATS THE SONG

  • its amasing how far wev comed from wagons

  • So... in essence....we would be able to eventually see which computer is accessing porn, no?

  • its the point they are showing you how they work, Get over it.

  • Wait wait wait wait.. if they are invisible how can they be seen UH?

  • WTF did i just watched?

  • Very misleading title, by the same token i could record a video of the signal on my router and just move it around to show the signal strength..

  • They use the road. And use the traffic signals. WAW...

  • I fucking want a microwave camera ;_;

  • WTF is That music

  • I think, that would be moree awesome, if they used 1 moving led bar and high exposure photo.

  • It is the actual signal.....all of you are retarded...it was caught on camera, hello, they're using a camera to "catch" it. Those lights respond to Wi-fi signals by lighting up....so yes, this title was correct. Get some brains.

  • Hey can I borrow some Wi-Fi? Sure! *gives a pole of light* The fuck is this?

  • I don't see what everybody is raging about. Yeah, it wasn't the actual signal, but it was an interesting representation with a capture device, and you know what? I think it looked cool and captured the idea of a visible WiFi signal quite artistically. As long as there is me, and apparently 459 others who enjoy this video, this is not at all a waste of bandwidth.

You may now proceed to shoot my opinion down with pedantic arguments.

  • fucking stupid! Total waste of bandwidth. Take this shit down.

  • This was from a tv commercial -_-

  • @MrRockydog4000 well the thumbnail was

  • lies...

  • Low quality recording leaked into the video editing program and made the text low quality.

  • Yeah on a quick read its misleading. But where else am I going to see some cool shit like this?

Subscribe. glad I found this channel

  • You could make some cool light pictures with that technique. :)

  • How is the title misleading? This is exactly what I was expecting.

  • Haha get it u cant see them because theyre invisible! the title is dead on

  • Misleading? No -it was ingenious

  • title is correct

  • wonder what wifi would look like if you were able see it in the z axis too

  • Yup, I'm done with this channel. I don't know how I've had the patience to put this off for a year.

    Unsubscribed.

  • Regardless that is pretty cool. Very little harm done in their titles. Its simply the dissapointment of getting hope up.

  • Bleh, now i lost all hope. First the "hacking visualization" now this shit?

Newscientist, what a disappointment, you just lost a reader.

  • visualization of how annoying misleading titles are...

  • Visualization of wifi signal strength, cool

  • I used to like this channel, but it seems just to be blowing out misleading titles lately just to get more views which is drastically losing my respect.

  • meh...

  • This is a splendid idea.

  • clevr

  • Looks like an ad for T-mobile! :)

  • In other news, a blind man sights an invisible unicorn.

  • @El3ctricPenguin That news is very obviously faux due to the incorrect usage of the word 'sights'. (Or at least, how it is generally accepted the word 'sight' is to be used.)

  • Ok but is it locked or unlocked? And if locked, what's the password?

  • im getting pretty tired of newscientist diliberately using misleading titles as bait

  • @Fadem12 next they will have pictures of chicks in thongs with the titles.....

  • @Fadem12 how is it misleading? it may not be what you expected but its still true...theyre making the invisible...well...visible...yes theyre using wifi sensors to trigger lights in response to increased signal thus making the signal visible but thats still a true statement they are catching invisible wifi signals on camera...just becuase its not what you expected doesnt mean they lied or were misleading...the idea you had was misleading your self which caused your frustration...blame yourself

  • @MrNickp2300 I think you will find that it is a camera photographing a detector, which is cool but, it certainly isn't the same as "Invisible Wi-Fi signals caught on camera".

  • @MrNickp2300 No, they are not "making the invisible ...well...visible". Or even catching Wi-Fi signal on camera. what they are catching is light reaction to those signals. It's like saying "we will catch microwaves on camera" and all you see is a burguer getting warmer.

  • @Fadem12

I understand what you're saying, and agree, but in this vid it's not that important compared to others. The end effect created nicely shows the waves of signal in a pretty cool way. Although, yes, with the thumbnail and title I was thinking they'd found some way of actually filming the signal itself and my mind was racing trying to come up with how then as I clicked. Oh and, Splinter Cell ;)

  • having a corneal implant that would let you see wifi would be useful

    -- evolve or die --

  • Misleading title, but interesting nonetheless.

  • No description? Shoddy NSV!!!!

  • This guy most have been really fed up with the network manager

  • Wouldn't it be better to say Invisible WiFi signal strength caught on camera? If I'm understanding it, they are basically converting signal strength level to LED level. So a signal strength of 0% = 0 LEDs lit, 100% = all LEDs lit. Still cool.

  • @dmholman

This channel has a history of misleading/inaccurate title. Get used to it. It's no big deal if the actual content is interesting.

It's a great mental exercise too. "spot the difference" logically/analytically then (try to) articulate your thought. Smile give yourself a mental rewards. Hey doing better than those science dudes must be worthy of some juicy adrenaline.

  • that's a big ass signal meter ya got there dude.

  • Lets get some high def up in here!

  • pretty cool... lets get a HIGH RES VERSION ALREADY NSV

  • This is nice glitch music, I wonder what it's from?

  • Great concept.

  • this is pimp. i want one.

  • ...... its 2011 and no hd cmon guys

  • It's just the signal strength, not the wifi signals displayed like "what they look like".

  • @Konve I'm gonna go with, thats what they look like.

  • It's basically what are grid looks like, nice...

  • this is sumwhat amazing...

  • I'd love one of these sticks

  • @codecomposer

you can make one of you own with a few old egg boxes and a bottle of lighter fluid.

  • Spy among us D:

  • not because our eyes can only see a narrow band of the electromagnetic spectrum that these waves are "invisible", the are quite visible with the right transducer

  • could be better with 5 or more lights to make a 3d imagery ;)

  • The signal reading is updated every three seconds so a changing bar made of lights is produced as the user walks around with the rod. By setting up a locked-off camera with a long exposure, a light painting that looks like a bar graph is produced over time.

  • it's kinda invisible in a kids game but science isn't childish! now the lawnmower man & virtual bodies are childish and to the extreme! HA!

  • Life is short look at jpan on St. Patrick's Day! Wi Fi is the best thing science can do, now! shame on you guys for posting this when the world is in trouble! just kidding LOL!

  • I thought only Dr. Jan Pajak only discussed invisible waves! maybe I'm wrong!

  • pretty artistic

  • They really should do voice overs like they used to instead of just music. I understand how this thing works, but a voice over would be nice.

  • now where are my netnavis!?

  • great sharing

  • ingenious

  • Were they sine waves?

  • interesting

  • did you guys notice videos got better again... maybe complaining really does work

  • @princeofexcess

of course it does.. for every action there's a reaction

  • @larry89 yea but for some actions there is an opposite reaction (to what is intended)

  • Fake, most of this channel is a fraud. Unsubscribed.

  • @jpodejko How could this possibly be fake? It's very obvious and simple how it works.

  • @jpodejko

    successful troll is successful

  • Pretty cool, now make a 3d map of it. :)

  • So simple, yet so impressive.

I really thought they would use something ultra-high-tech.

  • nice experiment

  • Can you make a device that lights up when nuclear radiation is detected?

  • @LouisianaGatorGirl it's called a geiger counter. Makes sounds too!

  • I may have to just commit suicide then.

  • i am ammused

  • Kind of a misleading title. You're not catching the actual signals on camera. :P

  • @hgryphon They are as much as any other video of an electrical gauge capturing signals. Its just a "macro" wifi meter.. Made an ok video, could have been a great video with a little more creative post work.

  • @XphR all this channel cares about is cheap and easy promotion for its site.

  • @marcarmstrong88 That is sad but believable.

  • @hgryphon

  • @hgryphon do you know what the word analogy means?

  • @momhubbard Sure. Do you know what the word "disingenuous" means?

  • @hgryphon lol, touché... great reply. Indeed I do.So, do you understand the word "pedant"?

  • @momhubbard I looked it up. I also don't care what you think of me, personally.

newscientistvideo had been doing this a lot lately, where they'd put up a video with a title and then when I watched the video, while it was kind-of sort-of what the title said, in actuality it was not. What I don't understand is why you and some other people are rushing to defend these videos when they have misleading titles.

Eventually I solved the problem for myself and unsubbed.

  • @hgryphon I recognise the need for accuracy... the title could be percieved as misleading. But the fact is, I have not seen wifi signals represented in this way and as yet I am to be shown an example of wifi signals that is wholly represented by this title. In truth you have swayed me that the title is clearly verging on sensationalism to drag in more viewrs but look at it like this... NewScientist is a money making organisation... they likely also have a marketing department :P

  • @momhubbard It's more than sensationalism, and here's why. When you watch the video, are you seeing the actual signals as the title implies, or are you seeing time-lapse photography of a wi-fi signal strength meter? If it's the latter, you certainly didn't see signals caught on camera, you saw a meter caught on camera, and that was my initial beef with this video.

I have no problem with a company making money, but I'd rather see someone do well by doing good than not.

  • Awesome

  • keeewwll!!! always wondered if we can do this!!!

  • free wifi everywhere

  • First in a long time i watched a newscienctistvideo and felt glad that I did.

  • Is there a light rod to measure 'the force' which, as we all know, surrounds us and binds us?

  • @GreatGungHolio You mean gravity?

  • Wait guys, this isn't a graph where the x axis represents time. Each image of the light rail represent signal strength at it's exact location at the time that image was taken (every 3 seconds). It seems kinda dumb if you don't read the article, but it is really cool how they thought up the idea to use a long exposure time camera to do this. I just gave you all a readers digest version of the article, you're welcome. Just enjoy the art of it now.

  • @dragonamt well technically since it was done with one moving light rail it is actually a graph over time, but the x axis represents both time and position in this case.

  • Guy passes by Starbucks

    Lights explode

  • Once again, science and art combine to prove CP Snow's dissatisfaction with "two cultures" was misplaced.

What a gigantic waste of time this was. Let the "artists" continue to fingerpaint with excrement and let the scientists get on with something worthwhile.

  • Wow , I now want glasses that can make those waves visible

  • interesting.

  • it'd be cooler if you could invent a camera that could see all signals seperately passing through an office or something.

  • It would be better if a stronger signal was displayed with a brighter light. The representation used just leads to misinterpretation IMHO.

  • @celiomsj most of us learn how graphs work, but maybe youre just "special"

  • That's art.

  • creative

  • I don't understand so is the light-blue light visible to us or invisible (to our naked eyes)?

  • Nice!

  • they should make a gun that shoots wifi and explodes cell phones with telemarketers

  • thats really cool

  • u guys know wi-fi causes cancer, right?

  • @amicusnemini The signal waves don't carry enough energy to damage the DNA in our cells. So it doesn't cause cancer.

  • @amicusnemini Hey, guy. You do know that stupidity spreads like cancer, right?

  • @amicusnemini Yeah right.

Next thing you know, ducks have teeth, the internet influences the weather and epilepsy is triggered by wooden chairs.

  • Wow!

  • Do jaja!

  • Fuck, i would make it realtime so as people would walk by the can see theyre phone cause ripples in the lights.

  • 360p

  • took me till 1:15 to get it.

  • wow, that is amazing

  • The waves were not caught on camera.

A visual representation of signal strength using led lights was caught on camera.

  • @Wattapus wow being bitchy eh? I think I need to call NASA and tell them they are a bunch of liars since they interpret radio signals into colors to make the universe look actually interesting

  • @Razzfazz87

Changing the look of something to serve a bias would in fact be a lie. But that isn't what NASA is doing. I don't think you understand how graphs work.

  • now that is cool, a nice way to map radio waves.

  • wao!

  • That's what I like to see [: scientists putting time and money into further proving the existance of something which is already known to exist :D

  • this cures cancer.

  • I hate this minimalist impressionist scratchy art music. It is nihilistic.

  • Wifi causes brain cancer

  • @systat i dont have cancer? how about a link to your claim.

  • @systat Right, as did cellphones or TV.

The truth is: EVERYTHING CAUSES CANCER.

  • @systat

so you're saying wifi specifically targets your brain?

  • @systat If it would, we would all be dead by now.

  • Amazingly Cancerigenous!!!

  • thats amazing!

  • That is pretty cool

  • not so invisible now are you!!!!

  • @luckviewer777 we are one step closer into reading robot's telepathy

  • I guess they're not so invisible anymore.

  • awsome!
