Could someone explain the line from the video description that reads:
"Don't fight aids, hunger and obesity increase healthy behavior."
Was this a typo, a nonsensical statement, or do I just not get it. Any responders please explain yourself, rather than just saying "You're a retard" or something. :)
No worries. It means you cannot "end poverty" instead you have to "increase economic opportunity". Fighting the negative side of a problem is not near as effective/useful as working on the positive solution side of the same problem/issue. Focus on increasing in healthy actions and behaviors, not the stopping the negative.
Ahhhh, I see. However, usually a misplaced comma doesn't change the meaning of a sentence, but in this case, it DOES. "Don't fight aids, hunger and obesity increase healthy behavior."
As it's written, everything after the comma can be taken as an independent statement that hunger and obesity increase healthy beahviour, which is dumb. To make the sentence mean what you wrote in your reply, the comma needs to be in between "obesity" and "increase".
God bless you. There is a saying that I'm sure you are familiar with about teaching people to fish, rather than just giving them fish. When you just stop the negative, you create a vacuum that can be filled with other negative behavior. By working with the locals to create an infrastructure, you are creating a local "pond" where all can learn to fish (work, teach, parent, etc.).
I encourage action and prayer for God's will, however you understand God in your own faith.
yes, but what about NGO/NPO logistical configurations combined with transparent "tier 6" elements? can threaded platforms restore effectively with other collaborative sources? transparent feedback and successful failures are the mantra of open source partnerships. all controls need grassroot problem techniques, along with solutions, so tactical/practical loops will have more "orgs" they can report in their networks.

Great question, iateyormum. I would hope large foundations and major philanthropists would be very, very interested in 3rd party evaluation systems, programs and models. Then again, I even want to know what happens with my $50 when I give it to an org too. Candidly, foundations and many corporations would probably pay for a service like this...
Its a good concept, assessing the quality of the service that your $50 pays for. would you really want to know if the $50 had paid the administration cost of a member of staff who audits the service and the stationary to write to you?
In terms of large foundations, this is really consumer lead. those companies that support fair trade etc use it to add value, fine. But the majority would rather save 50 cents and get the cheaper option?
Admin costs come with the territory. That being said, I think you will see more and more for-profit companies build in more open and transparent third party reporting as time goes on, and social enterprises become more and more understood. People ask, but it's the NPO/NGO staffer answering. Ask the CEO of any company if you should invest in his/her org. Maybe foundations/philanthropists require it. Maybe once *some* ngo/npo's do it perhaps on their own, they would be rewarded with greater and greater volume of incoming funds.

Shadab, you made a great video. I just sat in the first row and saw Muhammad Yunus speak in Portland, Oregon just this last Sunday. Matter of fact, sat next to a gentelman from Bangladesh who set up the first computer network for Grameen Bank a couple decades ago.
Good thoughts and kind words AlixLwanga, thank you. Even individuals can help make a difference, see Kiva & Microplace if you live in the US, My-C4 if you do not to explore the world of microfinance.
Phranquely, I don't think a country that has no resources can be pulled out of a rut. It's either leave the crap hole country you currently live in, or you're doomed to live an indiginous (crappy) lifestyle for the rest of your life.
Seriously, how can anybody expect that some country in the middle of the Sahara could possibly become a first world nation? (OK... I have some idea on how they could, but it would take a long time, and nobody is interested in delayed returns.)
Bangladesh has had some real positive changes over the last 30 years, and a lot of that has to do with Muhammad Yunus and three decades of microfinance. And Phranquely, I'd love to hear your idea, even things that have delayed returns are worth exploring
Great point ZuluWhyte, probably a more important point than I made. Not sure if you're asking me or Phranquely what either of us does for a living. Me, I'm a serial and social entrepreneur...been starting companies since 1989. All very grassroots, on a shoestring, bottom up type orgs.
2. Markets consist of human beings, not demographic sectors.
3. Conversations among human beings sound human. They are conducted in a human voice.
4. Whether delivering information, opinions, perspectives, dissenting arguments or humorous asides, the human voice is typically open, natural, uncontrived.
Google *The Cluetrain Manifesto* to read all 95 items, I think you might enjoy them...
Networked markets are beginning to self-organize faster than the companies that have traditionally served them. Thanks to the web, markets are becoming better informed, smarter, and more demanding of qualities missing from most business organizations.
Here I have a question, doe anyone know why Africa has so many problems like this? Because the rest of the world messed it up so bad. To fix Africa we need to A) leave it the hell alone, or B) put trillions of dollars into fixing what the world continues to make worse. Seeing as how this begging on youtube ploy isn't going to raise that much and if it did it wouldn't have enough workers to do anything. A sounds like a good plan
Granted I used pictures some great kids took in Uganda for the video. And granted the music is from a Ghanaian master drummer who lives in Portland, Oregon. But frankly the message behind the video is not directed at just the continent of Africa. Not in any way. It really is meant for all NPO's and NGO's worldwide.
Yep, I understand govs support ngo's. One of the important things in this rather short video...is *transparent third party reporting*. Even better if the people doing the reporting are the group that is the one that is supposedly being helped by the NGO. Performance that can be evaluated by the people and groups in need. That'll put a snap in the step of the NGO staff.
Well, georgituber, by US standards I'm not rich or elite. I'm guessing neither are the majority of 147,000+ viewers of this video. So, I still would like to figure out then... how does the average person *make the world a better place*. Even if the elite/rich don't care (tho I think many do), but even if they don't...if the Average Joe that's reading this now is like you and me... What can the Average Joe simply do to make the world a better place?
Figuring that very thing out, what the average man can do -- that is a quest many find rewarding... I'd say read, educate yourself, learn who you are in the world. Books can help you do that. And the library, unlike school, is free to all.
Well put mctrlsy. For those in developing countries living in rural areas without a library...see Room to Read...a wonderful org that could partner with you and help you build a library in your community.
This video is too simplistic, ignorant of past efforts to do precisely what is called for in the video (and the results of those efforts), and panders to funders needs to be hip and current. Not serious, in fact, foolish.
Interesting POV. Captbobalou, I would love for you to provide some links to web sites, case studies, and the myriad of information online that details those *past efforts, and their results*.
Here are some companies that DO exactly what I'm talking about, and do it well: Innocentive, Collaborative Drug Discovery, and Science Commons.
Well, I went granular and specific...looking forward to seeing what you have to share.
I've got nothing against the rich/elite or the poor/downtrodden. But, the message of collaboration, accountability, and transparency has at least been seen by over 147,000 individuals watching this video. Some of those individuals, not elite, nothing more than human beings...may take the message to heart.
Never doubt that a small, group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. ~ Margaret Mead
It is sad that we still live in a society where there is so much ignorance. People have a lot of courage to make statements on youtube, but have little to back it up with. Stupid statements, nonetheless...
Agreed. Trying to get rid of as many as possible. Many people behave online like they do when behind the wheel of a car and do things they would not in person.
if you went to africa and offerd to help them, they would gladly accept your money and gifts but come back in 5 years and they have waisted it and are waiting for more buildings and money to be given
buddy it takes more than just throwing money at the problem. Ever hear of the Marshall plan? The problem is getting that money into the hands of people who are willing and capable of spending it for the greater good...
Yep. Getting money into the hands of people willing/able to spend it well. People who at the grassroots level develop their own ideas, and are given resources to make things happen. Things like microfinance, microcredit and microenterprise.
dude, i think maybe they dont have 5 children coz they want to, Do u realize that a great proportion of theyre population does not take access to articles of prevention as the condom?
maybe u should think about those things before u tak a conclusion...
Whether people think one thing or another, honestly guys, giving something your value to another who would treasure it more is one of the most rewarding things you can do. If everyone did that a little more often, we porbably won't see homeless and starving people in any nation.
there's plenty of blame to go around, but doin thats not gonna solve anything. People gotta care, they gotta want to help each other. We can't save everyone but i'll be damned if we cant make it better.
that's right rov, be proud, don't let them haters bring you down. them africans would have been born somewhere comfortable too if they'd have thought of it first
i was being ironic! why give my a bad review? This fella talks about survival of the fittest as if he had something to do with him being born a nice home with access to good schools instead of in the gutter with aids. The odds are stacked against these people, it doesn´t have anything to do with survival of the fittest. Look at the masai, theyre doing fine. centuries of greed and hatred is whats killing that place.. not being black
I agree. And the world looks to a Nation that is in a recession because of the greed of corporations and declining health care so how can we help the world when we have having problems helping ourselves. Instead of seeing aspiring leaders who want to fix these probs, we see them whoring after the black vote and filling their pockets by corporate lobbyists.
This might make me sound cold hearted and racist, which im not and I dont like pleople like that.. BUT, like darwin said it: "Survival of the fittest" .. theres no point in pumping billions into a country which is screwed "Dead man walking".. its not helping democracy and the PPP aint rising and africa isnt doing any good to other parts of the world... Even tho I think its a good answer.
Yeah so we should just watch and let them die. i mean if its up for someone to help and if that someone can help then wuts the deal about not helping...us can help to save lives why not trying.
"if you wanna make the world a better place take a look at yourself and make the change"... pretty good advice for a paedophile...thats the issue tho, stop watching shit TV, stop trying to look like barbie, stop judging people, stop thinking the world owes you something...get over yourself and do something meaningful...easier said than done I know I haven't...much respect to those who try
so , we should stop all monetary aid to all the world and give the money to a commitee. the worlds charities have spent years distributing aid to all .would u donate to world vision if the money was channeled somewhere else.this would be chaos.
The reason MEDC countries don't give LEDC countries money is because of the possibility of the LEDC countries becoming too powerful. There isn't anything we can do about THAT because its out of the civilians area of power.
Waste of time, fighting poverty, because the only people who can change things, arn't doing it.
Best so far. In fact, haven't seen a decent answer yet, and this one comes close because it seems practical and realistic, while others are either naieve, impractical, ill-informed, limited in scope or just plain silly.
It depends on the school of sociology you agree with, many times NPO/NGOs create new problems of their own by creating a sort of dependency instead of strengthening the countries individual markets. However, I think this is one of the better responses..
Why is it that America is asked to intervene to help people when we don't people get mad for not sharing but, when we do and is doesn't end up the chocolate river they expect they get mad and tell us you shouldn't have gotten involved in the first place
We look like those old tribes squabbling bout that and that. WHO CARES?! We're still ALL human! And the most sadden thing I conclude is that we value more some pieces of metal and paper or some digital digits than the life of our very own species! Nations come and go. If people doesn't look out after other people, we're just going down. Who cares about tehm being africans, Europeans, americans, asian... Man didn't changed nothing in 6000 years AT ALL
The 'whitey', ofcourse, is not to blame for every problem in Africa. But in most cases they are. Africa is, on the contrary to the countries you mentioned, divided in boundaries that whitey created; so that different ethnic grouping come to live amongst each other. Whilst creating them in about the 19th century they also started promoting ethnic hostility between different tribes. This is only other example to back what rams007 already said.
We arent solving their problems. We give them barely any money (compared to our national income) to help them help themselves!! Thats what the video is about. Plus, we should help them since we pretty much put them where they are in the first place. We steal millions of dollars from other countries every day.
Because whites created a better society?? did the aborigines asked for better society? did the African asked for better society?? nobody asked white to come to create "better society" they just came to steal!! and that makes them criminals!
Lol. its not a mater of criminal or noth. the Africans and aborigines just sucked and their armies did (if they had any). The weak are oppressed and fuck while the strong reign. God, go play some Age of Empires u prick.
I get the drift. Create an international market where NGOs can influence other NGOs. Transfer funds to the ones more in need. The problem with that is that every NGO thinks their cause is top priority.
We're thinking of funny ways to help the poor because the UN isn't what it used to be. I say give the UN more money, let them get back on track.
70% of fertile land in my country is used to cultivate crops for export to your world! not to sell but to pay depts! fixed dept! and you wonder why we are starving? and now you'r coming to Africa to make it your "play ground"!? laughing and make fun of us!
All countries are capeable of a healthy atmosphere. I think if poor countries evolved past that stage it would solve a lot of problems; instead of richer, generous countries sending food over they should be constructing a sustainable future for them. It's like bringing up a child.
The best YOU can do it's to leave us alone! dont come to Africa and stop afrikans to come to your countries, and stop all that bullshit AID! "let nature take its course" then the world will be a better place!
ramso007, when visiting Gulu, Uganda last February I saw more white people in air-conditioned white trucks with attached NG0 flags waiving in the wind. I know many of the locals were not happy with the NGO situation. Can you please elaborate on your point of view on "aid"?
Agree with you 100% Aids tends to do just the opposite for the people it is intending to "help". Partnerships. Collaboration. Put the *people* that are being *helped* in control of resources, ideas, planning, funds, execution, and go from there.
..do you know why people are starving in Africa? it's because almost everything we cultivate goes to Europe! to pay those fake depts! Europeans have been looting Africa for centure!! you wanna help Africa? tell the leaders of your world to leave us alone!!
ramso007, you don't need me to tell them, you're doing a great job right here, right now. And for a change, given this YouTube/Davos video exchange...some of the leaders may actually hear you. Maybe.
..there is no "white Africans" those are colonies, looters from England and Holland they come to steal Africa! just like Autralia, what is happening to Aborigines? they where happy and abundance of food before the looters came to Australia!
Well, not sure about waste of time...but the need for transparent reporting by 3rd parties would let you *see how and what the NGO's are doing*. Many/most microfinance orgs simply count their success by loan volume, or people loaned to. How many have risen from poverty, education their children, or other very real measurable results?
I agree with increasing economic opportunity, but you realize that in most of these poor African nations, that would involve deposing the current dictator/tyrant and installing some type of democratic republic.
i agree that there is a lot of profit being made by "nonprofit" organizations. even though not all the proceeds go to aiding those in need, it's better than nothing. we just have to make a better choice on where to donate IMO......
All business, even NPO's (nonprofits) and NGO's (nongovernmental agencies) have overhead. When orgs are open and transparent about their results. When the people they are serving are the ones that report on the results...know that some headway is being made.
america should not invest their time and money into things that are secondary to their own people. and why always show africans, im not racist but that gives the africans americans always something to say about how people in africa are starving, well, what about the other 45% of the world in 3rd world conditions, its not just black people eh folks. but im for being humane and saving life
The problem I see is grass roots. IE: All the people at the top of the food chain in this country probably live a life more similar to western standards. As long as the poor people at the bottom are helped by rich nations then the leaders don't have to do squat. We need to pressure the leaders by cutting off their supply of cigars & whiskey. Seriously.
When ever you see something about people in africa there is always at least one person on these comments that has to say something racist lol i think the NGOs think they are 'better' then the people they are 'helping' an imaginary superiority complex, alot of people seem to have
my mainpoint wasnt the slavery. rather the robbing of natural resources of africa. they would be rich now if we didnt take all their resources. now they have nothing and u are blaming them for that. and calling me a retard is just another proof that u are ignorant.
lol quit whining like a little bitch. You did have a head start, I'll give you that. But then again Egyptians are of a middle eastern descent. Look it up They were migrants! Oh and the use and munipulate shit, if your refuring to slaves Africans were inslaving Africans before the white man showed up. Man get your facts right retard!
hubbard771:"They are the oldest culter and still they have not advanced in time who's fault is this?"
what kind of ignorant question is that? did u have history at school? the reason that africans are suffering right now is because of the greediness of europeans 100+ years ago. if u dont know why then u should learn some history.

Great point ZuluWhyte, probably a more important point than I made. Not sure if you're asking me or Phranquely what either of us does for a living. Me, I'm a serial and social entrepreneur...been starting companies since 1989. All very grassroots, on a shoestring, bottom up type orgs.

1. Markets are conversations.
2. Markets consist of human beings, not demographic sectors.
3. Conversations among human beings sound human. They are conducted in a human voice.
4. Whether delivering information, opinions, perspectives, dissenting arguments or humorous asides, the human voice is typically open, natural, uncontrived.

Networked markets are beginning to self-organize faster than the companies that have traditionally served them. Thanks to the web, markets are becoming better informed, smarter, and more demanding of qualities missing from most business organizations.

5. People recognize each other as such from the sound of this voice.
6. The Internet is enabling conversations among human beings that were simply not possible in the era of mass media.
7. Hyperlinks subvert hierarchy.

Cobi321 4 years ago
Granted I used pictures some great kids took in Uganda for the video. And granted the music is from a Ghanaian master drummer who lives in Portland, Oregon. But frankly the message behind the video is not directed at just the continent of Africa. Not in any way. It really is meant for all NPO's and NGO's worldwide.
neddotcom 4 years ago
Yep, I understand govs support ngo's. One of the important things in this rather short video...is *transparent third party reporting*. Even better if the people doing the reporting are the group that is the one that is supposedly being helped by the NGO. Performance that can be evaluated by the people and groups in need. That'll put a snap in the step of the NGO staff.
neddotcom 4 years ago
Well, georgituber, by US standards I'm not rich or elite. I'm guessing neither are the majority of 147,000+ viewers of this video. So, I still would like to figure out then... how does the average person *make the world a better place*. Even if the elite/rich don't care (tho I think many do), but even if they don't...if the Average Joe that's reading this now is like you and me... What can the Average Joe simply do to make the world a better place?
neddotcom 4 years ago
Figuring that very thing out, what the average man can do -- that is a quest many find rewarding... I'd say read, educate yourself, learn who you are in the world. Books can help you do that. And the library, unlike school, is free to all.
mctrlsys 4 years ago
Well put mctrlsy. For those in developing countries living in rural areas without a library...see Room to Read...a wonderful org that could partner with you and help you build a library in your community.

This video is too simplistic, ignorant of past efforts to do precisely what is called for in the video (and the results of those efforts), and panders to funders needs to be hip and current. Not serious, in fact, foolish.
captbobalou 4 years ago
Interesting POV. Captbobalou, I would love for you to provide some links to web sites, case studies, and the myriad of information online that details those *past efforts, and their results*.
Here are some companies that DO exactly what I'm talking about, and do it well: Innocentive, Collaborative Drug Discovery, and Science Commons.
Well, I went granular and specific...looking forward to seeing what you have to share.
neddotcom 4 years ago
I've got nothing against the rich/elite or the poor/downtrodden. But, the message of collaboration, accountability, and transparency has at least been seen by over 147,000 individuals watching this video. Some of those individuals, not elite, nothing more than human beings...may take the message to heart.
Never doubt that a small, group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. ~ Margaret Mead

i was being ironic! why give my a bad review? This fella talks about survival of the fittest as if he had something to do with him being born a nice home with access to good schools instead of in the gutter with aids. The odds are stacked against these people, it doesn´t have anything to do with survival of the fittest. Look at the masai, theyre doing fine. centuries of greed and hatred is whats killing that place.. not being black
lionsandhyenas 4 years ago

The reason MEDC countries don't give LEDC countries money is because of the possibility of the LEDC countries becoming too powerful. There isn't anything we can do about THAT because its out of the civilians area of power.

This is only other example to back what rams007 already said.
vivalarevolution1220 4 years ago
they shouldn't have to be white for you to identify with them. how about identifying with mankind

We arent solving their problems. We give them barely any money (compared to our national income) to help them help themselves!! Thats what the video is about. Plus, we should help them since we pretty much put them where they are in the first place. We steal millions of dollars from other countries every day.

I get the drift. Create an international market where NGOs can influence other NGOs. Transfer funds to the ones more in need. The problem with that is that every NGO thinks their cause is top priority.
We're thinking of funny ways to help the poor because the UN isn't what it used to be. I say give the UN more money, let them get back on track.

ramso007, when visiting Gulu, Uganda last February I saw more white people in air-conditioned white trucks with attached NG0 flags waiving in the wind. I know many of the locals were not happy with the NGO situation. Can you please elaborate on your point of view on "aid"?

elaborate? what i mean is, those aid or whatever you call them, just to make us dependence of YOU ! Don't make us like babies "feeding us with spoon"
ramso007 4 years ago 2
Agree with you 100% Aids tends to do just the opposite for the people it is intending to "help". Partnerships. Collaboration. Put the *people* that are being *helped* in control of resources, ideas, planning, funds, execution, and go from there.
neddotcom 4 years ago
..do you know why people are starving in Africa? it's because almost everything we cultivate goes to Europe! to pay those fake depts! Europeans have been looting Africa for centure!! you wanna help Africa? tell the leaders of your world to leave us alone!!

I fail to see how any NGO makes the world a better place. Funded by those who take resources from other countries, NGO is a waste of time.
trodmi 4 years ago
Well, not sure about waste of time...but the need for transparent reporting by 3rd parties would let you *see how and what the NGO's are doing*. Many/most microfinance orgs simply count their success by loan volume, or people loaned to. How many have risen from poverty, education their children, or other very real measurable results?

All business, even NPO's (nonprofits) and NGO's (nongovernmental agencies) have overhead. When orgs are open and transparent about their results. When the people they are serving are the ones that report on the results...know that some headway is being made.
