@aledrinker666 Hi there, the tune you are talking about is from "Hearts On Fire" by Hammerfall. They are an awesome band, check them out when you get a chance :)
@killerchickens Hammerfall are indeed a most awesome band.... I knew I had heard it before, I've seen that video for the song with the Swedish women's curling team. Pure power metal goodness. Thanks again!
i recently just bought the keeley modded metal zone. the Jekyll and Hyde covers every area that i need and i play some pretty heavy stuff. the keeley metal zone does metal and metal alone. it is an alright pedal if your wanting a harsh sharp distortion, but honeslty i was not impressed with it at all! the distortion side of the J + H dominates the mt2 in every aspect.
@daveyandveronica I guess that depends. I did find the Keeley MT-2 to be a very nice pedal indeed. I have since gotten a high gain amplifier and now only have a Nova Drive for low gain sounds. All MT-2s, modded or not require lots of tweaking, and only have one sweet spot which kinda sucks, but still much better than many of the pedals out there.
Ha i had that peavey. VK112? atleast that was what i had, nice motherfuckin amp for sure. But Ive got a kustom practice amp thats great for headphone jamming... and my stack is a redbear mk120... + cab 4x4 celest.vintages... soo...
ah... maaan i need to get a JH, the crunch is nice.
The J&H is not a "sexy" pedal per se, but it is very very effective, well built, and well laid out. It sounds great with my Blackheart Little Giant, Fender Hotrod Deville and Mesa Triple Rectifier. I can't say that about a whole lot of other pedals.
I guess it depends on the use. If you are going for that classic rock sound, yes, I would have to agree. The J&H is a very awesome pedal that gets overlooked because it doesn't set you back $300+
I don't have the Keeley anymore, but I would have to say that it was a very awesome pedal for singing leads. It could get fizzy sometimes, but I always used an EQ after it.
Hi there, thank you for your comment. The hardwire pedal in the back is an RV-7. I liked the Keeley a lot when I had it, but since I was just collecting too many distortion pedals to get "that sound" I wanted, I sold it for funds towards another amp. I would say the TL-2 is similar to the Keeley, and the true bypass is nice, but the Keeley was a monster. I would say you can't go wrong with either pedal.
Hi there, no problem. I am sure you will like the TL-2, it is a good pedal. Very similar to the Keeley. Just remember that it isn't so much of a set and forget pedal, and that an EQ pedal after is always a good idea.
I think the MXR may be a bit better for higher gain applications. But it is a matter of personal taste. If you are looking for a gate, consider testing the XMR, the Boss, Rocktron HUSH and ISP Decimator.
I found the MXR to be better for my particular application.
Hi there, I set the EQ on the MT-2 to slightly boost the mid frequencies at around 1 o'clock. I set the bass to about 3 and the highs to about 10:30. The gain is set to 1 o'clock, and the mode switch is on the far right.
The MXR EQ is set for even a bit more of mids, but just a hint.
I'm looking at the Keeley MT-2, do you recommend it as your first choice for metal pedal. compare it with metal muff or guyatone metal pedal? it with an eq in the effects loop? What do you say, is keeley mod making a big difference? Isn't the better choice for metal tone the Keeley modded MT2? over the visual sound pedal? Is the visual sound a better deal, getting enough good metal tone cheaper, more value? What do you say?
Hi there the Keeley MT-2 is indeed vastly superior than the regular MT-2, but at that price range, you may be getting more from the J&H. If metal is what you seek consider the Tone Freak Severe pedal, considerably better than the Keeley MT-2.
I don't even own the Keeley MT-2 anymore, I found it to be somewhat of a one trick pony, but I still have the J&H if that is any indication of its versatility.
is that a hardwire cm-2 on the top..i got one and i like it a lot..now i want a distortion..what do you recommend..im playing grunge(nirvana) im looking in for vox satch or boss ds-1..
It is actually an RV-7. I do have a CM-2 now, I just didn't have one at the time... As for distortion I believe Kurt used a combo of DS-1/2 and Mesa Boogie amps, so the DS-1 or Satchurator will not be enough to get you there unless you have a mesa amp. Consider looking into a SansAmp GT2 for that Mesa distortion. And I would suggest that is you are getting a DS-1, do the Keeley Mod yourself, or buy the modded pedal from Keeley (worth the money).
thanks for the reply..i have a fender blues deluxe..so i guess i could not get a grunge sound out of a satchurator, i think im gonna try other distortion pedals with a high gain and crunch..
Yes, that is always your best bet. I would strongly suggest that you look at Wampler pedals, the Super Plextortion, and Triple Recstortion are real gems.
But for the price, the Barber Dirty bomb is very hard to beat. If you are seeking for good grundge/metal sounds, that little box will deliver the goods and it is cheaper than the Satchurator, Keeley MT-2, and many other so-called metal pedals. David Barber makes very high quality stuff.
hey man i just got a peavey valveking 112.. im kinda disapointed coz at high gains it sounds fuzzy and muddy.. at the store i thought it was great though. other than that the noisy hum is drivin me nuts.. any advice pls???? besides throwing it off a 23 storey building...
Hey there, there are some ways you can work with your VK112. You could replace the VK speaker with something like an Eminence Swamp Thang, or Wizard. Or you could consider a Vintage 30.
As for the gain, yeah, the gain structure of the amp seems to be more of a fuzz rather than distortion, that is why I use pedals on the clean channel.
As for the hum, well, high gain will always give you hum, it's just the nature of gain.
EQ pedals help, but you do the math and decide if it's worth it.
This is very true, when playing in a rock band, the Keeley MT-2 may cut a bit better, depending on how you set it up. I mention a rock band because overdrive pedals in general tend to cut through the mix better than distortions. My MT-2 is set slightly differently now than how it is in the video, and it sounds somewhat heavier, but still with plenty of mids to be stand out in the mix.
Personally I think the Jekyll and Hyde is a win-win: you get distortion, equal to a modded DS1 with mid-shaping possibilities, then there is the TS808 clone with a bass-boost function. And as the bonus you can combine both!!! It can't get any better than that. Besides that the service from visualsound is great... (got spare parts sent right away).
Personally I like to set the overdrive and use it as a base, and when I need more gain you just use the Distortion as a boost...
Very true, this pedal offers a wide palette of sounds. I like using the distortion for rhythm and I use the overdrive for leads. It adds more harmonics and clarity.
I want to buy the jekyll and hyde, how does the jekyll side handle light drive, (like barely any grit, barely past clean) and how is the rock sound (not overly high gain, but like thick)
Hi there, the Jekyll side is pretty much a TS808 but with more volume and a bass boost switch on it. It is great as a clean boost, or just to add a little bit of drive to your sound. It is very good for blues, or to drive your tube into into distortion. It was that side in fact that got me interested in the pedal.
As far as how it sounds, well, it is a TS inspired overdrive so you can expect a bit of a mid-hump, but that can be dealt with with the bass boost.
That is too bad. Take it back to the store and see if they will fix it for you, or if you can use that money to get a new one. I think it is worth the money for what you get: Two quality pedals in one.
Both sound sweet. The Keeley produces a more open sound and the Hyde Distortion produces a more closed sound. Can't that be changed by the "sharp/blunt" switch?
Yes, the Hyde side has a sharp/blunt switch on it that makes the pedal much brighter, but it doesn't sound as good (IMHO). I like to set the pedal this way so that my distortions sound different.
It is hard to tell from this video, but the J&H has much more depth than what you hear here, and the same goes for the Keeley. What you describe as "closed sound" is perhaps the compression, which is much greater on the J&H, and that is on purpose :).
Nice pedals.I use a boss ge-7,Mt-2 and a jekyll and hyde pedal.I usually combine all 3 pedals but lay the dist on the J&H way back and i get a heavey tone.
I like using the overdrive side of the Jekyll & Hyde as a solo boost. It does a great job of making both the Hyde side and the Keeley MT-2 stand out of the mix when playing at high volume.
Great ped man! I own a MT-2 Keeley mod too, although its slightly tweaked to my tastes. Its a little more tubey than your regular Keeley MT2, to get more fat, punchy tight dist/drive. And I use a Boss SD-1 "TS808 mod" as a booster to get more bite out of the MT2. And in addition, I added a 7band EQ, to make my sound more fuller. This combo really did it for me. You'll dig this combo if you guys are interested in stuff like Lamb of God, God Forbid, At the gates, or Unearth.

High gain and EQ only?

@pnq77 Just the Hyde side of the J&H and both pre and post EQs.
I no longer use a pre-eq since I now use an MXR MC-401.

How does the sound compare to the actual Triple Recto distortion?

i'd deff agree. I now use a blackheart Handsome devil (which i got when i traded in my Hot Rod Deville) and it sounds great through both of them.

I've owned a Keeley Metal Zone and I currently own an original Jekyll And Hyde. The Jekyll And Hyde kills the Keeley in my opinion.
