You don't want a new Maytag either. There aren't any reliable front loaders. If you want a reliable machine, get a belt-drive Whirlpool or Kenmore (pre-1986) and have it rebuilt. It will cost more, but last for at least 20 years after a thorough rebuild....
My mom had the exact same Maytag when i was growing up I still have it, your machine is not from the 40's it is from the 60's My mothers machine was manf in july of 1962. just though I would let you know. Mike
I'm in the market for a front loading washer and dryer. I saw this cool Whirlpool Duet (WFW9550WW) and a Bosch 500 Series (WFVC5400UC). At first I was interested to see which model vibrated less on the spin cycle so I got on the internet to look around then I discovered many folks have had to deal with failure issues on their machines. Perhaps I should opt for a low end top loader (as cheap as they come) to avoid needless fretting with feature rich appliances with fundamental design issues.
I saw one of these when i was a young kid.my friend's mom had one and I was AC powered and I saw another that ran on gas

Did you ever get anything caught in a wringer?
Clothes can wrap around the wringer and be torn
If it does, an article of the wash may
wrap several times around a roller before it is noticed; unwinding such a
piece is often difficult, sometimes impossible without removing a roller
