I would love to have one and for all those that bitch, most fish are caught from the wild and bred...what do you buy?? the offspring of wild caught parents
@BMDestroyers Yeah but do you understand that those fish have veryyy low intelligence, and an octopus has HIGH intelligence, is the smartest invertebrate, has long AND short term memory, where most fish forget things after 3 seconds, in the UK octopuses have special protections that normal invertebrate dont because of their high intelligence, an animal that can remember shit should be free
I don't live in the UK and we can have pet octopi. I guess your ruling out a killer whale and dolphins? Pretty sure a large pool doesn't account for the ocean. The worlds a fucked up place. They way our ocean is now were doing a good thing buy removing them from the habitat rather then suffocating in filth and oil, ect.
@MrSinkbaek the mimic octapus can transform its body into over 15 known forms, unclidung poisones flat fish, sea snakes, and even the deadly lion fish. They're so fricken awesome!
Mimic octopuses are smart enough that I consider buying and selling them like slavery and killing them like murder. I'm glad you found this little guy and saved his life. You're a good person!
That is so cool. I know you can't get it back to the ocean. It was here and it was probably going to die here because most people can't do a salt water tank, even most people who try. It would be cool if he could be released though. Maybe an animal organization could help? It could also draw attention to these amazing animals and to their plight in pet stores.
I'm glad you play with this guy. They clearly need it. They're so smart.
The awesome octopus is safe shouldnt that be the bottom line and its pro bely safer in his/her tank considering it doesn't have to worries about finding food nor getting killed by a predator :) think about it before you talk shit over the internet
You repleied to my add you cant put him in the ocean it would destroy the natural order but you can still do something for him that would be good for him like donate him to a local zoo where he can be free in a larger cage.....
@MrTotalwargamer Zoos won't take "donated" animals like that. They would quickly become overcrowded if they did, because a lot of people with exotic pets decide later on they don't want them. ok.. awesome fucken creature, but why the fuck would you want to own one. they will never mimic anything in your tank, it will not do anything but sit around like a regular octupus.. this is a bad ass animal , in the ocean, no in a glass square.. what a waste
@MrTotalwargamer.....you cant just put an octopus that has been captured and been kept in a tank and shipped to a fish store back into the ocean. That will kill it. And I live in California, so flying to Indonesia with an octopus as my carry-on isnt really the best suggestion .

Wait? You saved him from a commercial food fish store? I'm quite sure they just boil the poor souls alive in a pot or dismember them while still moving, despite how intelligent they are. Such a shame..
@GWhite1001 Look at the video description. It states that the individual saved the octopus fro ma fish store, and I was just saying how maliciously octopi are prepared before they are eaten.

You know? It's getting kind of creepy how you're replying to all my comments on videos that aren't yours. I have an opinion. Don't get obsessed with me.
@starsshonepale Puppies from puppy mills are sold in stores too, though. So little is known about mimics, and they're so rarely seen, that it's just a better idea not to buy them. It increases the stores need for them, which then, in turn, increases demand from the people who keep running them down, bottling them up, and selling them. It's a struggling species.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@fuzztanks Also, that octo is being kept in a 30 gal tank. It needs at least 150 gallons. Theres nowhere for him to hide, and no coraline algea. It's an inexperianced owner, and the octopus is probably dead by now.
@fuzztanks If very little is known about them how can you stand on your high horse and say they are struggling? If they were endangered it would be illegal to sell them. Right?
if a man breed octopus gets to the ocean it can die cuz normally they did not have the instincts of the ocean octopus so maybe it doesnt know how to use the mimicry very well
erm... not really. U see, they die of starvation after laying their eggs as the have to protect them at all times meaning that they can't hunt... If you feed them while they are hatching their eggs, they will live much longer
if you believe in a creator or not (I do believe in God) you still have to admit evolution got us to where we are today
The octopus is fine though....
It's not a mammal it's a fish
It lives to survive. As long as you don't abuse it in any way it's perfectly content. A nice size tank, the right things to explore and sleep in, all the food it needs.
They aren't intelligent enough to understand these things
buying and selling animals to the wild is self-defeating. you just pay the people that caught the animal to begin with (or to farm more in captivity). the animal is better off as a pet than as some sort of mercy mission. regardless, doesn't look like too bad a life.
I read another article on Octopuses today. They've been promoted to "tool users" because a scientist noticed one picking up coconut half-shells in water, cleaning the mud out of them, carrying them to another place and then setting them up as a den! I "caught" an octopus once, he had hold of the bait when I pulled him up. He gave us (3) a careful look and then climbed over my shoulder, onto the pier, and down the pole to the water.
I'd give the octopus a jar. Octopi(?) like to have a crevass or place to hide in/rest in. Can't say this octopus would be better off wild because he's not learned the skills to stay alive in the wild. Just as long as you play with him and give him things to explore, he will have a better life than if he's ignored.
Hamsters will fruitlessly scratch at the floor, even when everything else is good. They have a natural need for a den to hide in. It should be an opaque, non-toxic jar.
their intelligence is at a very high level, they can't miss what they don't know exists... they don't know things by instinct like most animals but they learn it. So since they haven't learnt that anything exists he's happy... just like me before i learnt Xbox existed; i found out when i was in P3 at my friends house :P
i agree with sspamer mostly. also remember that happiness is a perception. your happiness might no make me happy and my happy might not make you happy. honestly, i think i would enjoy sitting in a tank with no predators and all my meals served to me. actually i think people pay good money for lives like that lol. but when that octopus doesnt know any way of life outside its own, it cant want a life that it doesnt know exists.
Hi, nice video and I noticed the discussion going on, but you should really go post that on a blog somewhere. Good topic. I have a bird that stays in its cage even if I leave the door wide open for it to leave. I've even taken it outside into the "real world" and it doesn't go away. So, I can't say the animal is happy or not. You talk about happiness like it's a concept all creatures have and seek. Emotions are highly complex, and who knows if an octopus even has emotions.
An octopus born to a 'fish store' will have no concept of life in the ocean, so why is it even an argument? It's not as though it were pining for the fields. Besides, other animals follow the same hierarchy of needs that humans do, so at least living in a tank s/he can worry about what the colour of his/her next toy will be, as opposed to who will be eating him/her for lunch tomorrow.
this octopus has no defense in the wild it just mimics so would you rather it be torn to pieces or in this tank with toys free food and shelter from other animals ? hopefully this guy takes care of it
mankind is simply amazing: now there are two parties here; the pro-octopus-on-the-tank, and the ones who are against it. this octopus in a tank is a fact, and its most likely not going to change. your opinions are of no consequence.
How can you tell its extremely distressed and frustrated? What does a happy octopus look like?
SO, what if he releases it into the wild and it gets fucked up by another animal? I mean, COME ON... this octopus is just fine. You are too concerned with bullshit...
You should be more concerned with meth and murder than whether this dude has a pet octopus.
Who are we to judge it's quality of life? The owner could be cleaning its larger tank, or it could have health difficulties that prevent it from being released into the wild. Don't complain unless you know all the details.
Oh, and I don't know if it looks happy, but if I were an incredibly smart creature, this strange pink thing would be pretty entertaining to me.
Just a question, but does this mean you think that the only pets that people should have are cats and dogs? also i understand what you are saying but you also have to realize that we have no clue if this octopus is happy or not. I mean at least it doesnt have to worry or be afraid about being eaten.
This is a fascinating video from a scientific standpoint, because it demonstrates 'play' behavior in the octopus. 'Play' behavior is considered a sign of high intelligence among most researchers and the octopus is certainly the worlds most intelligent invertebrate. Amasing when you consider that they are closely related to the essentially brainless clams and oysters.
So thank you very much Krichardson87 for this facinating brief glimpse into the recreational behavior of the octopus.
can you get these at pet stores? how much does one cost assuming I already have a setup aquarium?

Wait? You saved him from a commercial food fish store? I'm quite sure they just boil the poor souls alive in a pot or dismember them while still moving, despite how intelligent they are. Such a shame..

@TheREALSoffish and then they poke their eyes out with hot needles. WTF are you talking about?
GWhite1001 1 year ago
@GWhite1001 Look at the video description. It states that the individual saved the octopus fro ma fish store, and I was just saying how maliciously octopi are prepared before they are eaten.
TheREALSoffish 1 year ago
@TheREALSoffish a fish store is not a seafood store

You know? It's getting kind of creepy how you're replying to all my comments on videos that aren't yours. I have an opinion. Don't get obsessed with me.

You shouldn't have a mimic octopus. They're endangered species, and really need more room then any tank you could afford.
fuzztanks 1 year ago
@fuzztanks i'd agree but krichardson bought it from a store.
starsshonepale 1 year ago
@starsshonepale Puppies from puppy mills are sold in stores too, though. So little is known about mimics, and they're so rarely seen, that it's just a better idea not to buy them. It increases the stores need for them, which then, in turn, increases demand from the people who keep running them down, bottling them up, and selling them. It's a struggling species.

@fuzztanks Also, that octo is being kept in a 30 gal tank. It needs at least 150 gallons. Theres nowhere for him to hide, and no coraline algea. It's an inexperianced owner, and the octopus is probably dead by now.
fuzztanks 1 year ago
@fuzztanks If very little is known about them how can you stand on your high horse and say they are struggling? If they were endangered it would be illegal to sell them. Right?
GWhite1001 1 year ago 13
@fuzztanks "so rarely seen" yet there's hundreds of YouTube videos made by divers.

@GWhite1001 and you`re still writing to me in reply to an arguement we had four months ago.

if a man breed octopus gets to the ocean it can die cuz normally they did not have the instincts of the ocean octopus so maybe it doesnt know how to use the mimicry very well

you dont seriously keep an octopus in a fish tank do you?

Is an octopus a good pet? Where can I buy (fertile/living/going to hatch) octopus eggs?
Lugia625 2 years ago
i really want one too but they only live 1-2 years =/
thiscommentsux 2 years ago 2
@thiscommentsux
erm... not really. U see, they die of starvation after laying their eggs as the have to protect them at all times meaning that they can't hunt... If you feed them while they are hatching their eggs, they will live much longer

Life is an amazing thing
if you believe in a creator or not (I do believe in God) you still have to admit evolution got us to where we are today
The octopus is fine though....
It's not a mammal it's a fish
It lives to survive. As long as you don't abuse it in any way it's perfectly content. A nice size tank, the right things to explore and sleep in, all the food it needs.
They aren't intelligent enough to understand these things
we can do algorithms
Pet fish = OK

It isn't a fish, its a cephalopod. Like squids and cuttlefish

buying and selling animals to the wild is self-defeating. you just pay the people that caught the animal to begin with (or to farm more in captivity). the animal is better off as a pet than as some sort of mercy mission. regardless, doesn't look like too bad a life.
jimmybilbo 2 years ago
I read another article on Octopuses today. They've been promoted to "tool users" because a scientist noticed one picking up coconut half-shells in water, cleaning the mud out of them, carrying them to another place and then setting them up as a den! I "caught" an octopus once, he had hold of the bait when I pulled him up. He gave us (3) a careful look and then climbed over my shoulder, onto the pier, and down the pole to the water.
dragonlaughing 2 years ago
He did have a jar. I just saw the video with the ghost shrimps. A jar, a half egg, and ghost shrimps. Oh Joyful Octopus!
dragonlaughing 2 years ago
I'd give the octopus a jar. Octopi(?) like to have a crevass or place to hide in/rest in. Can't say this octopus would be better off wild because he's not learned the skills to stay alive in the wild. Just as long as you play with him and give him things to explore, he will have a better life than if he's ignored.
Hamsters will fruitlessly scratch at the floor, even when everything else is good. They have a natural need for a den to hide in. It should be an opaque, non-toxic jar.
dragonlaughing 2 years ago
although it does look like it could use more stuff in the tank.
jimmybilbo 2 years ago
@jimmybilbo
their intelligence is at a very high level, they can't miss what they don't know exists... they don't know things by instinct like most animals but they learn it. So since they haven't learnt that anything exists he's happy... just like me before i learnt Xbox existed; i found out when i was in P3 at my friends house :P

@sukhoisown ya except you can move around as much as you want and this little guy is stuck in a tinny tank
p6a9u1l42 1 year ago
i agree with sspamer mostly. also remember that happiness is a perception. your happiness might no make me happy and my happy might not make you happy. honestly, i think i would enjoy sitting in a tank with no predators and all my meals served to me. actually i think people pay good money for lives like that lol. but when that octopus doesnt know any way of life outside its own, it cant want a life that it doesnt know exists.
ThisKidOnYoutuube 2 years ago
Hi, nice video and I noticed the discussion going on, but you should really go post that on a blog somewhere. Good topic. I have a bird that stays in its cage even if I leave the door wide open for it to leave. I've even taken it outside into the "real world" and it doesn't go away. So, I can't say the animal is happy or not. You talk about happiness like it's a concept all creatures have and seek. Emotions are highly complex, and who knows if an octopus even has emotions.
sspamer 2 years ago
An octopus born to a 'fish store' will have no concept of life in the ocean, so why is it even an argument? It's not as though it were pining for the fields. Besides, other animals follow the same hierarchy of needs that humans do, so at least living in a tank s/he can worry about what the colour of his/her next toy will be, as opposed to who will be eating him/her for lunch tomorrow.
MissEmsily 2 years ago 4
this octopus has no defense in the wild it just mimics so would you rather it be torn to pieces or in this tank with toys free food and shelter from other animals ? hopefully this guy takes care of it
XxDoNkEy 2 years ago 2
mankind is simply amazing: now there are two parties here; the pro-octopus-on-the-tank, and the ones who are against it. this octopus in a tank is a fact, and its most likely not going to change. your opinions are of no consequence.
Metalogicc 2 years ago
How can you tell its extremely distressed and frustrated? What does a happy octopus look like?
SO, what if he releases it into the wild and it gets fucked up by another animal? I mean, COME ON... this octopus is just fine. You are too concerned with bullshit...
You should be more concerned with meth and murder than whether this dude has a pet octopus.
Emmybodykilla 2 years ago 2
Who are we to judge it's quality of life? The owner could be cleaning its larger tank, or it could have health difficulties that prevent it from being released into the wild. Don't complain unless you know all the details.
Oh, and I don't know if it looks happy, but if I were an incredibly smart creature, this strange pink thing would be pretty entertaining to me.
decemberdazzle 2 years ago 5
Please let us know how you get on, many Youtube users here are obviously concerned about its quality of life.
I see that you saved him from a fish store, well that's the first step, the next is to give him the life that he deserves.
Best wishes, please take this advice seriously.
Mgglawrence 2 years ago
