  • can you get these at pet stores? how much does one cost assuming I already have a setup aquarium?

  • under water ditto?

  • Sweet.... grill it up with some fresh lemon, parsley, and garlic..... yum yum yum

  • tiny fucking thing!!!

  • most psychedelic pet

  • duuuude how much did u pay for this?

  • @foreverisalie713 i dont own an octopus but i know the mimics cost around $350-bout $500

  • @alexfrom323

It's not a really great investment, either, Octopodes don't live more than 5 years.

  • it's not a pet. is it legal? how about contacting the local aquarium?

  • @arachne24 your allowed to have them as a pet. if not they wouldnt be selling them at a petstore

  • mimicking a jellyfish 0:12

  • put something stimulating in his cage. and some sand, rocks, cave etc

  • can it change into anything?

  • Lol personally I don't see how keeping an octopus as a pet is appealing, I just stick to my cockatiels and dogs :D

  • hehehhe he wore it like a hat hahahahah

  • You should put a tiny pirate ship in the tank and see what your octopuss does with it

  • @JihadJoeC4 Careful it might mimic a pirate, then you'd be in trouble...

  • do you hold it?

  • I thought it was illegal to sell them

  • @GooGobbler113 I'd actually love having a bald eagle as a pet.... I'd train it to attack assholes like you.

  • So awesome.

I want to get a 200 gal saltwater tank someday and one of those. It's my favorite animal, I find them fascinating.

  • 0:09 Whose ya jelly fish now, bitch!?

  • It's a jellyfish!

  • such beautiful animals should be kept as pets.

  • @lhomme38 You disgust me you ignorant fuck. Its such an insult to the beauty of nature to cage its perfected creatures. Would you cage a great white? Would you cage a bald eagle? Would you cage a dolphin? Though these creatures are often put in captivity, it doesn't mean its right. We should stay as neutral to nature as possible, and stealing natures amazing & rare creatures is doing the exact opposite.

  • @GooGobbler113 i ment not as pets i must have mistyped im agianst keeping animals as pets and dont think im tring to defend myself i usually forget a word in my typing

  • @lhomme38 .........ROFLCOPTER

  • @GooGobbler113 I'd cage them all and charge people to come see them.

And, I'd love a bald eagle as a pet.

  • @glassbrain fail troll is fail. I miss being 12 :(

  • @GooGobbler113 Zoo's are great.

  • CTHULU FHTAGN!!

  • where did u get that? and what do u feed it?

  • What do you feed it?

  • Hahahaha that is too freakin' cute :)

  • how much did you pay for it?

  • @kaianuanu there between 30- 50 bucks not expensive like half the price of a thang

  • @dozzzer11 damn, good deal, so jelly

  • 0:13 it's all like "WOO HOO!!! IMMA JELLYFISH!!!" :D

  • What the hell! there creaturs that are suppost to be in the OCEAN!

    not in a FISH tank!

  • Those are really neat little animals and it's really cool that you were able to save him.

  • Isnt it illeagal to have one???

  • @krichardson87 wow! do u see it turn into different kinds of sea creatures!?

  • I would love to have one and for all those that bitch, most fish are caught from the wild and bred...what do you buy?? the offspring of wild caught parents

  • @BMDestroyers Yeah but do you understand that those fish have veryyy low intelligence, and an octopus has HIGH intelligence, is the smartest invertebrate, has long AND short term memory, where most fish forget things after 3 seconds, in the UK octopuses have special protections that normal invertebrate dont because of their high intelligence, an animal that can remember shit should be free

  • @honeyysecret

I don't live in the UK and we can have pet octopi. I guess your ruling out a killer whale and dolphins? Pretty sure a large pool doesn't account for the ocean. The worlds a fucked up place. They way our ocean is now were doing a good thing buy removing them from the habitat rather then suffocating in filth and oil, ect.

  • you can buy those?

  • this isn't a mimic octopus. It's a wonderpus. The pet store cheated you.

  • @catokeeffe Maybe it was just mimicing a wonderpus? 8-)

  • @MrSinkbaek the mimic octapus can transform its body into over 15 known forms, unclidung poisones flat fish, sea snakes, and even the deadly lion fish. They're so fricken awesome!

  • Mimic octopuses are smart enough that I consider buying and selling them like slavery and killing them like murder. I'm glad you found this little guy and saved his life. You're a good person!

  • i want one

  • awwwww it's so cute ^^

  • That is so cool. I know you can't get it back to the ocean. It was here and it was probably going to die here because most people can't do a salt water tank, even most people who try. It would be cool if he could be released though. Maybe an animal organization could help? It could also draw attention to these amazing animals and to their plight in pet stores.

I'm glad you play with this guy. They clearly need it. They're so smart.

  • Yo teach it some new mimicry.

  • I'd hardly call that tank 'saving him'.

  • Wait fish store as in like pet fish store or a fish store where they sell fish for eating...

  • what is the care like? im truly fascinated with this species

  • The awesome octopus is safe shouldnt that be the bottom line and its pro bely safer in his/her tank considering it doesn't have to worries about finding food nor getting killed by a predator :) think about it before you talk shit over the internet

  • 0:12 look now it mimicked a jellyfish!

  • @MrMrUm lawlz!

  • You repleied to my add you cant put him in the ocean it would destroy the natural order but you can still do something for him that would be good for him like donate him to a local zoo where he can be free in a larger cage.....

  • @MrTotalwargamer Zoos generally won't accept donations like that. They aren't there as a place for people to dump unwanted pets.

  • @MrTotalwargamer Zoos won't take "donated" animals like that. They would quickly become overcrowded if they did, because a lot of people with exotic pets decide later on they don't want them. People often think that they can just drop any exotic pet off at a zoo and the zoo will be glad to have a free animal. Zoos are parks, not animal shelters.

  • how is this a mimic octopus?! its not really changing its shape as the real mimic octopus

  • @diviz0r A sleeping cheetah is not a cheetah since he's not chasing a gazelle?

  • @TixTipx ahh ok so it really is one. nice!

  • @diviz0r It only usually changes shape if its content or is being chased by a predator

  • That's so cute! How long have you had it? Is it doing well in captivity?

  • It's a spy you fool! it's watching you so it can teach its young how to mimic us! someday you'll show up for work and there will be a mimic octopus taking your job!

  • @pukedragon DEY TERK ER JEWBS

  • cool I always wanted an octopus! Is it still alive?

  • If you actually wanted to save him you don't need to put him in the wild but give him to a local zoo and come see him every once and a while. They can actually give him the experiance of being in the wild you cant >:(

  • Wow, thats beautiful! Nice to know he's/she's doing okay. It would be neat to have something like that, but I've got all my apartment can handle at the moment with a 60gal fancy goldfish tank... maybe someday :)

  • ok.. awesome fucken creature, but why the fuck would you want to own one. they will never mimic anything in your tank, it will not do anything but sit around like a regular octupus.. this is a bad ass animal , in the ocean, no in a glass square.. what a waste

  • @MrTotalwargamer.....you cant just put an octopus that has been captured and been kept in a tank and shipped to a fish store back into the ocean. That will kill it. And I live in California, so flying to Indonesia with an octopus as my carry-on isnt really the best suggestion .

  • @krichardson87 Not to mention potential ruin the native ecosystem, people let their lion fish go around me and they have created a big problem.

  • @MrTotalwargamer He can't do that, you don't know how it would interact with the native species. It could destroy the natural order.

  • @MrTotalwargamer noob comment

  • Pretty pretty thing.

  • well it's not like he can throw it back to Indonesia/Phillipines (where most of the mimic octos come from) even if he lives nearby a sea/ocean, the octopus can't be just thrown into the natural habitat because it might not adapt to it and end up dying anyways.

    just sayin' =/

  • @aznswti you're biologically correct. this mimic octopus has been living in captivity for a while now. its own life patterns are different and it is not used to having to use its abilities to survive.

  • lol@activists

  • Do they capture these things in the ocean and then sell them or are the ones they sell bred in captivity?

  • Hey.

    Hey.

    PETA homos.

    Go fuck yourselves.

  • i have to say its interesting to watch. further more being a saltwaterfish hobbist i disagree that as we have more knowledge with the lifespan of these creatures as pets. i also want to include that octopi are one fo the most expensive, inhumane, border cruel to have in capitity. octopi in captivity especially in a small tank environment have a life span of under 8months.

  • It looks happy to me, I thought about getting one, myself. Some people would protect a virus if they could I guess. For Example these control freaks might say lets have some more people donated to this virus so it doesnt die off, lol. There are humans locked away in small apartments, they are happy with ps3, dont need a forest to roam through.

  • why don't u put it back into ocean or give it to wildlife professionals?

  • he's not playing with it .....HE'S TRYING TO FUCK IT!

  • Hahaha! Look at how much fun he's having! So cute ^^

To put in my two cents I think you take good care of him and I'm very glad you saved him from those ignorant bastards. He's better off in your care then theirs I'm sure as you can actually you know tell what the fuck he IS. Good luck ^^

Bye bye cute widdle octopus :3

  • soo cute and small! :D

  • how did you get your own mimic octopus?

  • hes mimicing a jellyfish lol

  • can these not be bred in captivity?

  • Where the frak did you buy that? Must be expensive...

  • how much did you buy it for?

  • The mimic octopus is trying to imitate a jellyfish!

  • it was put in a custom octo tank that was 100 gal. and had a "mud" substrate at the bottom of the tank, which is what they have in their natural habitat, and yes, even 100 gal. is small. But it was all i could fit in the space i had and you have know idea how small this thing was.

  • @krichardson87 please tell me how you can acquire such an amazing creature. seriously where did you get that mimic octopus?

  • @krichardson87 how big is it?

if thats a kinda egg, i would guess 5cm across when relaxed?

  • @krichardson87 do not justify your pet ownership to anyone, because most people have owned a pet at least once in their lives. as long as you are taking good care of the animal i see no reason why you shouldnt keep it because lets face it...they are awesome animals.

  • And I have been reffered to a "he" on some posts...I am actually a "she"...just an FYI.:)

  • @krichardson87 ITS A TRAP

  • @krichardson87 lol "there are no girls on the internetz"

  • Oh....and no I won't give anyone information about where to buy them. because they shouldn't be for sale!

  • @krichardson87 such beautiful creatures shouldnt be eaten, captured, kept as pets, or anything, they should be allowed to roam free in the ocean

  • @krichardson87 im not trying to be mean, or if you'll even answer this, but if they shoodn't be for sale, why do you own one?

  • @krichardson87 then why do you own one!!!!!!!

  • @krichardson87 Then why in the hell do you have one? -_-

  • @krichardson87 Why do you say that?

  • @krichardson87 true dat garl!

  • ok ok ppl...so I posted these videos WELL after I originally took them..yes, I know these shouldnt be sold, I know they are a newer species...I know almost everything there is to know about them that you can possibly find on the internet. I did my reaserch...

  • I bought this guy and put him in a small tank while I was building his permanent tank. The only reason why I bought him was because the fish store I bought it from had NO idea what this guy was!...it was sold to me as a zebra octopus for 30 bucks...

  • these ppl didn't care, they just wanted money. so I bought it and fed it multiple times daily, and performed small water changes daily(same salinity and temp) and it lived a better life then in the hands of someone who thought it would be "cool" to own one.

  • Which yes, I am aware that it would have lived a better life in its natural habitat, but I couldn't stand to let some idiot not willing to put in the money, time, research, and effort purchase it. Oh, and the fish store no longer sells octopi because of my complaints.

  • Wait? You saved him from a commercial food fish store? I'm quite sure they just boil the poor souls alive in a pot or dismember them while still moving, despite how intelligent they are. Such a shame..

  • @TheREALSoffish and then they poke their eyes out with hot needles. WTF are you talking about?

  • @GWhite1001 Look at the video description. It states that the individual saved the octopus fro ma fish store, and I was just saying how maliciously octopi are prepared before they are eaten.

  • @TheREALSoffish a fish store is not a seafood store

  • @fuzztanks I get like that when some punk calls me a douchebag. And learn how to spell douchebag if you going to call someone a douchebag.

  • @fuzztanks stop being a shithead

  • @fuzztanks i'd agree but krichardson bought it from a store.

  • @starsshonepale Puppies from puppy mills are sold in stores too, though. So little is known about mimics, and they're so rarely seen, that it's just a better idea not to buy them. It increases the stores need for them, which then, in turn, increases demand from the people who keep running them down, bottling them up, and selling them. It's a struggling species.

  • @fuzztanks If very little is known about them how can you stand on your high horse and say they are struggling? If they were endangered it would be illegal to sell them. Right?

  • @fuzztanks "so rarely seen" yet there's hundreds of YouTube videos made by divers.

  • @GWhite1001 and you`re still writing to me in reply to an arguement we had four months ago.

  • if a man breed octopus gets to the ocean it can die cuz normally they did not have the instincts of the ocean octopus so maybe it doesnt know how to use the mimicry very well

  • you dont seriously keep an octopus in a fish tank do you?

  • how big is that tank? and how big can these octopus's get??

  • Is an octopus a good pet? Where can I buy (fertile/living/going to hatch) octopus eggs?

  • i really want one too but they only live 1-2 years =/

  • @thiscommentsux

erm... not really. U see, they die of starvation after laying their eggs as the have to protect them at all times meaning that they can't hunt... If you feed them while they are hatching their eggs, they will live much longer

  • Life is an amazing thing

if you believe in a creator or not (I do believe in God) you still have to admit evolution got us to where we are today

    The octopus is fine though....

    It's not a mammal it's a fish

It lives to survive. As long as you don't abuse it in any way it's perfectly content. A nice size tank, the right things to explore and sleep in, all the food it needs.

They aren't intelligent enough to understand these things

    we can do algorithms

    Pet fish = OK

  • @elitebanktryanny

It isn't a fish, its a cephalopod. Like squids and cuttlefish

  • buying and selling animals to the wild is self-defeating. you just pay the people that caught the animal to begin with (or to farm more in captivity). the animal is better off as a pet than as some sort of mercy mission. regardless, doesn't look like too bad a life.

  • I read another article on Octopuses today. They've been promoted to "tool users" because a scientist noticed one picking up coconut half-shells in water, cleaning the mud out of them, carrying them to another place and then setting them up as a den! I "caught" an octopus once, he had hold of the bait when I pulled him up. He gave us (3) a careful look and then climbed over my shoulder, onto the pier, and down the pole to the water.

  • He did have a jar. I just saw the video with the ghost shrimps. A jar, a half egg, and ghost shrimps. Oh Joyful Octopus!

  • I'd give the octopus a jar. Octopi(?) like to have a crevass or place to hide in/rest in. Can't say this octopus would be better off wild because he's not learned the skills to stay alive in the wild. Just as long as you play with him and give him things to explore, he will have a better life than if he's ignored.

Hamsters will fruitlessly scratch at the floor, even when everything else is good. They have a natural need for a den to hide in. It should be an opaque, non-toxic jar.

  • although it does look like it could use more stuff in the tank.

  • @jimmybilbo

their intelligence is at a very high level, they can't miss what they don't know exists... they don't know things by instinct like most animals but they learn it. So since they haven't learnt that anything exists he's happy... just like me before i learnt Xbox existed; i found out when i was in P3 at my friends house :P

  • @sukhoisown ya except you can move around as much as you want and this little guy is stuck in a tinny tank

  • i agree with sspamer mostly. also remember that happiness is a perception. your happiness might no make me happy and my happy might not make you happy. honestly, i think i would enjoy sitting in a tank with no predators and all my meals served to me. actually i think people pay good money for lives like that lol. but when that octopus doesnt know any way of life outside its own, it cant want a life that it doesnt know exists.

  • Hi, nice video and I noticed the discussion going on, but you should really go post that on a blog somewhere. Good topic. I have a bird that stays in its cage even if I leave the door wide open for it to leave. I've even taken it outside into the "real world" and it doesn't go away. So, I can't say the animal is happy or not. You talk about happiness like it's a concept all creatures have and seek. Emotions are highly complex, and who knows if an octopus even has emotions.

  • An octopus born to a 'fish store' will have no concept of life in the ocean, so why is it even an argument? It's not as though it were pining for the fields. Besides, other animals follow the same hierarchy of needs that humans do, so at least living in a tank s/he can worry about what the colour of his/her next toy will be, as opposed to who will be eating him/her for lunch tomorrow.

  • this octopus has no defense in the wild it just mimics so would you rather it be torn to pieces or in this tank with toys free food and shelter from other animals ? hopefully this guy takes care of it

  • mankind is simply amazing: now there are two parties here; the pro-octopus-on-the-tank, and the ones who are against it. this octopus in a tank is a fact, and its most likely not going to change. your opinions are of no consequence.

  • How can you tell its extremely distressed and frustrated? What does a happy octopus look like?

SO, what if he releases it into the wild and it gets fucked up by another animal? I mean, COME ON... this octopus is just fine. You are too concerned with bullshit...

You should be more concerned with meth and murder than whether this dude has a pet octopus.

  • Who are we to judge it's quality of life? The owner could be cleaning its larger tank, or it could have health difficulties that prevent it from being released into the wild. Don't complain unless you know all the details.

Oh, and I don't know if it looks happy, but if I were an incredibly smart creature, this strange pink thing would be pretty entertaining to me.

  • Please let us know how you get on, many Youtube users here are obviously concerned about its quality of life.

I see that you saved him from a fish store, well that's the first step, the next is to give him the life that he deserves.

Best wishes, please take this advice seriously.

  • Just a question, but does this mean you think that the only pets that people should have are cats and dogs? also i understand what you are saying but you also have to realize that we have no clue if this octopus is happy or not. I mean at least it doesnt have to worry or be afraid about being eaten.

  • poor thing

  • so entertaining -yawn-

  • octopi are super smart...lol i think he/she is adorable! and it looks pretty happy to me..

  • @fuzztanks Obviously, you know even less about them. There is no need for coralline algae in an octopus tank.

  • why would you have it in your house in a tank that small the should be in wild!!!!

  • hwo deos it not ecscape

  • lol. i think octopi are cute

  • soo cute, reminds me of my school of head-light-tail-light fish

  • It looks quite happy.

  • yes because a dolphin is a normal pet. cujos right tho ..........

    go invertabrates!

  • or maybe he just got stuck! lol

    just kidding!

  • aw.. cute :D it's like a normal animal playing with it. Like a dog, or cat... or dolphin

i agree with cujo, it's pretty dang smart for an invertebrate :D

  • I agree, it was amazing to see it playing like that!

  • This is a fascinating video from a scientific standpoint, because it demonstrates 'play' behavior in the octopus. 'Play' behavior is considered a sign of high intelligence among most researchers and the octopus is certainly the worlds most intelligent invertebrate. Amasing when you consider that they are closely related to the essentially brainless clams and oysters.

So thank you very much Krichardson87 for this facinating brief glimpse into the recreational behavior of the octopus.
